Well guys and gals,
I just sent ZFactor a PM regarding all the junk that has been showing up on our website recently. I don't know how this can be stopped, but I feel it's time to start requiring more info upon registration.
Anybody have any other ideas? I'd like to see a vote on this!!

It seems as though we have been getting slammed hard with the spam lately.:jawdrop: From all around the world according the addresses. I know this isn't a popular idea but what about members only forum???? Or maybe a more aggressive registration e.g. VIN number or something else related to the ZR-1.

Rest assured that no one dislikes spam more than those of us who must clean up the forum on a daily basis. Evey time a spammer is banned their IP address is also blocked to help prevent the same spammer from returning.
We do appreciate when you report said threads/posts, and make us aware of spammers using the PM system. One thing I would suggest is not to ever click on the links as it shows a hit came from a source posted here. That will only attract more cockroaches to the site. Also please do not quote their post because then we must remove the quoted post as well.

How about having the registration needing to be approved by a moderator?

As an FYI to everyone, we just noticed that one of the anti spam settings was not put back on when the forum came back up last time. Essentially all the settings had to be redone and this one slipped our attention. So now that it is back on we should see a decrease.

That is a good idea considering how much spam we have been getting lately.

I'd go for anything more than we have now. It would be nice to see more information on who we are talking with, what they drive, where they're located... I can't imagine anyone having a problem with more requirements to sign up. I feel that would give this Forum a bit more validity than ... well you know.

I am glad to hear that the anti-spam setting may block some of the spammers.
I personally am not too upset by the spam as it has been pretty obvious. I do not think that a valid VIN should be necessary to join the NetRegistry Forum. I joined long before I actually bought a ZR-1.
I agree that we should encourage forum members to fill out their profile.

How about having the first post of a new member being approved by a moderator before it gets posted?

With so many accounts now having dynamic rather than static IP addresses, does blocking an IP really do any good?

With all of the spam recently, I like this idea. But the draw back is Z-Factor probably has a real life somewhere:mrgreen: He probably doesn't relish the idea of screening all first timers. From what I understand the pay is pretty low for being a moderator:mrgreen:  All kidding aside, Z-Facor does an excellent job for all of us - Thank you:handshak:

It may or may not be possible with the forum software, but what about having a prohibition period of say one to two weeks where a new member can't post or send IM. Perhaps not perfect, but how likely would a spammer wait for a week or two to send spam.
Just kind of thinking outloud.

As for stopping the spam, use a confirmed opt in registration - send automatic email when someone signs in, user has to confirm email address by clicking link to open up a page with a captcha system to filter out spam robots (captcha is the squiggly distorted words -see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha)
