View Full Version : Want to tone down my exhaust overall volume

History:
I have full length tube headers and used to have flowmaster exhausts.
Last month I replaced the flowmasters for Corsa's to reduce/elimiate a resonance/droan sound at hightway cruising speeds (65-80 mph in 6th gear)
Corsa told me that it would be agressive without CATs and they were more than right.
With the Corsa it is somewhat quieter at steady highway cruising speeds.
At accelleration 1/2 throttle - to full throttle it is now louder than ever. Runs great and sound good for a race car but with the wife in the car it is not just agressive but extremely agressive, plus I don't want to advertise to every cop in ear-shot that I just jumped on it.
My mechanic and I are now discussing adding some short cats somewhere probably into the headers. He recommends not putting my original factory headers/cats back on but keeping them on the shelf incase I ever want to restore the car back to stock. Plus more problems if the original cats fail and have to be replaced.
Please help if you've solved the same problem or if you have some good advice to share. Thanks in advance.

WHAT I DID WAS use 3 in to the ultra flow x pipe muffler 3 in and use the 23/4 pipe from there to 2 flowmaster mufflers ..i used the flowmasterquiet big blk 3 in mufflers . one could allways use borlas formufflers hen she would be real quiet but cost 10- hp. my car is so quiet that my grannie wouldnt be offended

A couple of us have experimented with resonators. The 94-96 LT-4 has a relatively good flow compared to our stock resonator and will help with the noise. Cats not so much. I am not trying to sell one but I do have an LT-4 resonator you could try if you wish. If you like it, it's cheap !!!! Truth is it will take a little restriction to quiet your system. I have a wife, too !!!!

Did you replace with the entire CORSA system to include the centerline resonator or simply replace the mufflers? If you didnt then thats the problem.

If replacing the Cats Jeffvette reccomends going with either the Random Techs or Flowmaster Cats.

Sgreg, I sent you a PM on the resonator, if mrzzzr1 decides he would not like it, I would be interested in it..
Thanks

I have a brand new corsa system from the headers back. We are not sure where to put the cats just yet or how much they will tone it down. Corsa recommends them though. I do have the centerline resonator.
Sgreg recommened trying a LT4 resonator but I don't know where to install it if I went that route?

it would be in place of the Corsa Resonator, they is really no other place for it

It's just hard for me to fathom wanting to make the car more quiet, just put the original stock exhaust back on, it dosen't get better than that!!

Quiet is a relative term. I want to go from VERY LOUD to a slightly sub-doooo-loud. When I FT (full throttle) accellerate with the Corsa system behind my headers minus the cats the volume is "extrememly loud".
I just want to tone it down some. I do not want to return to the stock sound of air woooshhhing out the exhausts. The stock sound never appealed to me at all and definitely is not what I want to return to.

It sounds like your system may be louder than mine, and mine is loud(yet, the wife loves it) and I like it heartily loud. I have RT Cats, the high flows, with B & B & X-pipe. See my web page or I can send you the part numbers. It looks to me you have have no Cats. You need to add the Cats, the RT High Flows(no back pressure) and muffles the sound just right plus makes you legal.

I gotta hear the car. I have the B & B with X-pipe, RT cats, SW Headers, drove it 1000 miles to Portland and neither of us were bothered by sound/resonance. P.S. I did have 4:30 gears in the rear end which makes sixth gear so drivable but probably changes the pitch of sound.

Gears make a difference no doubt. I have the B+B 3rd Gen and the drive from BG had drone in it right at the 14-1600rpm range. Anywhere from about 60-75mph with 3.45s. Right now I am scanning the car to see if I can reduce drone thru tuning. I've always found that running a bit lean will "sweeten" and mellow tthe sound at cruise. My 84 with Magnaflow catback, TPIS headers and Random Tech cat had a resonance point similar to the ZR motor. Not much diff and with 3.45 Dana 44, it was at the same rpm. Tuning it helps quite a bit. Looking at the scan, the drone comes in with a 50-65kPa MAP and richer BLMs like 117-122 or so.
P.S. I may be going the LT-4 resonator route, so my B+B resonator could be for sale if someone is interested.
