First...this forum and the folks on it remain a tremendous resource of information on the ZR... thanks guys :handshak:
1. MY 90 did not have a R2D2 dome on the light sensor of the auto HVAC system and appears this little dome started with the MY91 run
2. No need to go into heart failure after seeing a header stud missing... seems even having more than one missing aka NOT installed at time of manufacture is common :icon_scra
3. Reasonably cofirmed that conversion of steel half shafts to alumimun start at MY 90 VIN # 610 (mine is #566 and has the steel versions)
4. This one went around the block several times with what appeared to be the conclusion that until MY 91 or 92 the trans tops were NOT engraved with the VIN number of the vehicle... Well I just removed the trans top to replace a small part and behold>>>

There it is... #566 and that is MY90
5. ZR-1 tax continues to impress me
Any one else learn something new about your ZR in the last couple weeks?
Michael

I have the dual top option and if I recall correctly only my transparent top has the VIN number on it. The painted top does not.

Michael, the original BEAST was built by Jim VanDorn and his Automasters team for Doug Johnson from his tired old '90 ZR-1 #596 delivered new Jan 8. 1990. Number 596 had steel half shafts. When the original BEAST was totaled in Jan 2, 1999, by a tornado Doug bought it back from the insurance company and shipped the totaled mess back to JVD in Palm Desert Ca. where all the performance goodies Van Dorn put in the original BEAST were put into BEAST 2 which was built on 1993 #211; a doner ZR-1 that JVD purchased for the engine and tranny for one of his Pirate racing cars. Those "goodies" are now in my '93 BEAST2 and include the steel half shafts from the '90 #596 car.

Thanks Michael, glad you enjoyed it...lots of good memories there for me and that's why I did my best to become the current "custodian" of BEAST2 (with a lot of help from Jim VanDorn)!

I have 2 91s, a ZR-1 and an L98 - both have both tops and the VINs are on all 4 tops. Maybe your colored top is not original to the car...

Oh.. it is VERY original to the car down to the scratch that the original purchaser (11/89) somehow placed in it...but it does not have the vin # as opposed to the trans top which does

Just to continue this, I confirmed that my '90 does not have an R2D2. I haven't taken the clear top off yet to check for any VIN. Red top doesn't have it. Cheers...

My top is original (I'm the original owner) and the painted top does NOT have the number, the cleartop does. Maybe it was a random thing at Bowling Green.

I think this closes the loop... the MY90+++ trans top has the VIN # and the standard painted hardtop does not...
