I got out in this zero degree weather to see how she ran on the road after the new coils and plug wires....smooth as a baby's butt and runs LIKE A BEAST!!!
As far as I know, it didn't miss a single beat on several 7k run-ups, and the acid test; 6th gear at 55 mph and floor it (used to NEVER be able to get close to doing that without some pretty violent cut-outs and missing). The fast idle was due to "some blockhead" leaving the power brake booster hose unhooked. (That makes TWO items...Can we say "checklist" next time?) I reconnected it, the idle immediately dropped to a happy level, and - it just ran terrific!
Now, owning an 18 year old, limited edition vehicle would be a daunting thing, were it not for this forum and the likes of you ol Z nuts that put me onto possible problems and the parts to correct them. Thank you all for your help!!
Now...mebby next season we'll do the P&P/chip/headers thing. IN the mean time, I'm looking forward to a few excursions in the new toy, now that she's a happy camper!

We've got it cold here, too. But we've also got it THIN. The air, that is.
Now that I'm more familiar with the car (was too afraid to drive it right during the test drive and xport back to the casa), I can't wait to get her back to sea level and see how she feels there. Gotta be a noticable difference.

Parker! No kidding! I lived in Franktown for about 7 months before moving to Bailey to live for about 3 years. Actually...living on "the flats", was noticably better than living at 8500', as far as air goes. I live at 600' AMSL now and when I drive from here to vist friends in CO, buy the time I get to Conifer I keep looking in my rear view mirror for the 26 foot camp trail I feel like I must have picked up somewhere along the way!;).
So! I plan to return "home" to my beloved CO mtns. in a couple years. Between now and then, I'm reading everything I can about FI for the "Z". That rear-mounted TT setup we're reading about might hold some promise - at least knock those mtns down to size a little!?
Dang! Living in CO and drivin' a Z...I can't imagine it getting better than that!

Accelleration at low rpm would almost always result in missing and even some hard cut-outs. No more, I'm thrilled to say!!

Paul,
Franktown, huh? I've got a pair of friends who live down there and work with me up at Buckley. Commute kinda sucks (I suck it up and pay the toll on E470), but nothing like the traffic I endured whe I was in DC. The folks there deserve a medal for putting up with that...
This area is by far the nicest place we've lived. We're going to keep the house and maybe return once I retire. I totally understand why you want to come back!!

Paul, I am dealing with simular performance problems. I have one thing I am going to check before doing what you did.
Glad to see you got it worked out!!!
Hope I will be in the same boat soon!

Thinking back on my symptoms, it seemed to be the worst until it had run for at least 20-30 minutes - getting better as it ran longer. That fact was causing me to think "air leak" or some such thing. Maybe that too was a contributor (the IH bolts were loose!).
But, then I got to thinking about it some more, and I realized that several times there was condensation on the motor (I know, I know...) and I'm thinking the wires under the plenum could have been wet too. After it would warm up and air circulated about, I suppose the wires would dry out and it would run better. I dunno. I'm just tickled that it is running good now, and hope that continues for a while!
In the process of fixing this one item, I spent many hours studying the FSM. So, if nothing else, I got a good bit of "book learnin" on the LT5. I'm not ready to time the cams or anything like that, but at least I know about the cam timing adjusments have a procedure to do it! It's been a good learning experience (but I ain't at the top of the curve just yet!)
Good luck w/ your quest.
