Once the plenum is done I am going to clean up my dymags which includes a refinish:
Not sure if I should keep them as purchased:

or refinish to the original silver:

Opinions?

The darker color will make them stand apart a little more from the typical A Molds and make your car a little more unique. What color is your car? It's not the one in the avatar, is it?

Have you thought about white... I think that would look sick and accent the white on the rest of the car. Unless white is not good for racing wheels... I wouldn't know.

There was a long discussion I believe over at Corvette Action Center regarding finishing DyMags. What I got out of the conversation was that it's quite a detailed job to get them done. There is a shop in New England that specializes in wheel repair and folks from all over the world send their (quite) pricey rims to them for restoration / correction. I'll see if I can dig up the threads if you're still interested in putting them back to the original which, in my opinion, looks much much better.

Here's some realtime darker wheel pics. Hope this helps in your decision. They were powdercoated by Jeffvette.

The problem is the conversion coating that seals the magnesium. I have found a product that is used to seal military vehicles/planes(Prokote).... that is nontoxic and cost only $26 a quart. Most of the magnesium fear is BS in that the alloy mixes used in the 90's and on is not the same stuff as in the 60s, etc. Magnesium is in fact know for corrosion resistence, just look at your flywheel cover on your Z.
The process is to strip, spray w/prokote....rinse with water and then primer within 24hrs.
powdercoating is difficult due to the gases released :bootyshak from the metal can cause bubbling.

GM also uses magnesium in the structures of many FWD cars, the connecting beam behind the dash is magnesium on many of them. The steering wheel in my Aurora is magnesium, and appeared to be uncoated.
FWIW, I like the gunmetal. But they look good in silver too. Personally I don't like that the center cap doesn't match the wheel color. It might be hard to color the center cap though. The aftermarket center caps might be a better bet since the emblem can be removed (though the circle is under the finish).

Color of the wheel is a personal preference, go what you like. For me the dark grey wheel on a red car just looks like the wheels are dirty from brake dust.
On a Dymag wheel I would go back to the original color. The style of the wheel is enough of a statement.
Again, this is just a personal preference.

Haven't paid much attention to that as the wheels came from Ry with them. You are right about the color though. I'll have to look into that. May be able to rattle can them closer than they are now.

I have polished A-molds on a torch red car and after a track session they look very similar to your picture. As long as I don't touch it and the color is uniform it actually looks cool. It does have a darker shade on the lip than on the center of the wheel, though. Maybe I should just clearcoat it with the brake dust on to preserve that "racer's look". :)

The darker color looks great. I really like the darker color John has on his 5 spoked '91.

I've always liked the darker color of John's wheels... I wondered what the story was behind the coating.
I'm probably going to go with the std (lighter) silver A Molds. The polished ones don't seem right to me on a white car, like mine. It just seems too bright - like there's not enough contrast. They look great on the darker cars though!!
I'd still consider white, but if it's between the light or dark silvers - I'd go with the dark.

Scott,
When did you become the Colorado Director? Congrats, you have a good number of people out there to put an event together. I found two and one wasn't to sociable. I'll make an effort to get together with the one guy this year. Demps has moved now so I am it as far as I know.

John,
Thanks... don't know if you remember me emailing you back in Dec when I was in DC on "business"? Anyway, you got me in touch with Bob Hall and the rest is history. It's a very short and unremarkable story.
There are quite a members here in CO now - most of us are fairly new to the registry (and I've met only one person who described themselves as "unsociable" - maybe it's the same person?). Anyway, I was working on a spreadsheet that had info on all the local members and their cars but it got nuked when my laptop **** the bed. Not the most important thing I lost, but there were several hours work invested in it. Still need to find the time to rebuild that and get it out to everyone in-state. Good lesson to all: back up your files!!
The only thing in the works for us is a highlighting of the ZR-1 at a Co Springs event in May. If you want to make the drive, there should be some nice scenery along the way. I'm hoping that the local crowd can get together in the next couple months for something casual, just to put faces to names.
Scott
