While I have my car in the air, I thought it might be good to change the transmission fluid. What fluid should I use?

I already did an oil change.
Replaced the left O2 sensor.(still working on the right)
Cleaned in the wheel wells.

What else do you all recomend?

What typ of coolant does everyone use? I don't want to get the wrong stuff.

It seems all I do is ask questions.:icon_scra

Standard recs are Castrol TWS 10W60 for the tranny fluid. Purchase 3L from your local BWM dealership. You'll use 2.2 or so. Loosen the fill plug before the drain plug. It requires a 17mm Hex.

I would also change the differential fluid if it hasn't been done recently.

Get the regular green stuff for the coolent. No DexCool.

Is there a specific fluid for the differential? Is there anywhere else I can get the tws 10w60 besides a BMW dealer?

roger, on the engine coolant ,PLEASE make sure it has gm 1825 on the label . using the wrong stuff will blow head gaskets. Napa has the correct stuff . on the rear end I use royal purple 75-90 and add 4 oz of limited slip . hope this helps

I am looking in the manual, but can't find how much of the royal purple I will need for the rear?

You don't HAVE to have RP. A bunch of folks, I dare say most, run Mobil1 that you can pick up from the local parts store. It's the standard weight gear lube 75/90. You'll need 2 containers and will use most of two with some slop left over. Be certain to pick up 2 bottles of differential additive from the GM dealer. I don't have the part number though. They'll know what it is.

The rear fill plug is a 10mm hex BTW.

why 2 bottles of lmtd slip addative?

Other than being spec'd by Gordon to do so, I'm not certain. I think it's an anti-slip rather than a limited slip deal. There are a number of gear lube that have anti-slip additives already in them. Maybe these were not available when the vehicles were manufactured?

It's a friction modifier. Typically I will only add two bottles on a 4:10 equipped car.

just curious , why 2 bottles in the410s. to make sure the clutches lock up?

if you can believe this back in the early days of posi additive it was whale oil. seriously! when the rep told me years ago now i was like, what? i was scared to ask what part of the whale it came from ha, ha. after that i did some looking into it & sure enough...that was the deal. couldn't have smelled too good:redface:

How many bottles do you want ?

Many GM posis without the additive will chatter going around low speed turns, I have experienced that with both GM posis and aftermarkets, too.

On the transmission you dont need anything fancy, the Pennzoil syncromesh works just fine, is cheap and available at your local Pep Boys. Dont waste your money on overpriced stuff unless you feel better using it . same with differential fluid, nothing real fancy needed. No combustion=no carbon...lasts a long time.

i hate to disagree with ya ron but bill budreau really knows these trannies . he really doesnt like using anything but the castol10-60. after having him go through my trans and how neat it shifts now . i cant see not using what an expert says to use and the 30 bucks more for the good stuff cheap insurance . jmho

Isn't it an engine oil? I mean, does the gearbox use the same oil as certain engines?

Pete, these aren't stupid questions. I got my Z back in August and have had nothing but questions for the guys on the Netregistry. They have all been very helpful and considerate of us NOOBs. I ask questions and search the site for answers all the time. Congratulations on your car.:hello:

Yes it's Engine oil. BMW spec's it for at least their M-series vehicles. I'm not a BMW guy, so I don't know what else it's used for by their line up.

Yep you're right Roger but you know, it's better to be safe than sorry, especially when you're new in a message board.

Ok guys, where can I find the Hex wrenches. I got a 10mm socket, but it won't fit(not enough room to get the socket in there). So I need to pick up a 17mm and a 10mm. I am pretty sure I can find the 10mm any ideas on the 17mm.

roger i got mine from my local napa store . i didnt get the socket type , just the old fashioned type , you know the one bent like an L. it a good idea to warm the car/tranny up before trying to pull the plugs, also remove the fill plug first . before removing the drain plug. the fill plug can sometimes be a sob to remove . any luck on the right side o2 sensor yet? just think when ya get all this stuff done:wink: you will be a veteran

I am getting closer on the right o2 sensor. I finally got a wrench that I believe will do the trick. I still haven't seen the connector on the right. How far up should it be from where I can see it? There is all that heat sheild stuff in the way.

After I get all of this done, I promise I will never lift it again--That is what I keep telling myself.:D

Roger, what I use is snap on SAM17A or CPT110A. It's easier to remove the plugs with the trans warm.

holy SH*t by the case , boss you a rich man . jeff is right about heatin her up and i got this one fro him also pull the fill plug first mmore than one guy has drained it first only to not be able to get the top one off. (eventually ) one of them was me:o on the o2 sensor its best to pull the right cossmember there are 4 bolts and a big nut engine mount .dont worry engine wont fall it held elsewhere also .you will be able to easily get to that connector .. is there silver cloth/blanket around your motor mount? this getting into advanced zr1ing  .these cars are addictive .roger , headers, exhaust inj porting and plenum porting 410 gears hurst shifter and good tune . will give you the same feeling as you would get hitting a 1iron to 4ft 235over water on the last hole to win the tourna ment . watch out you will end up like me with 2.my car went from 331.9 rwhp to 409.9.

Sears sells a 17mm allen wrench. It works great with a breaker bar. No problems at all.
