Chevrolet's 650-horsepower Corvette, developed under the codename "Blue Devil," will be called ZR1. That badge will appear on the January 2008 Detroit show car, and on the production version set to go on sale later next year as a 2009 model. GM has been developing this car for several years, using a supercharged version of the new 6.2-liter small block V-8 used in the 2008 Corvette(pictured). GM also considered such names as Z07 and Super Sport for the ultra-low-volume car. Price will be much higher than the 505-horsepower Z06, and Chevy will continue production of that car when the ZR1 launches.
Chevy first used the ZR1 moniker for a reported eight cars built in the 1971 model year with a 370-horsepower, 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) small block V-8. The option cost $1,010, while a 425-horse 454 was $1,221. The '71 ZR1 came with no special bodywork or badging. Chevy revived the name in 1990 for a 32-valve Lotus-designed, Mercury Marine-built 375-horsepower quad-cam V-8. That car had a wider tail to accommodate P315/35ZR17 Goodyears on 11-inch wide wheels and was built through the '95 model year. Badges included a hyphen, as in ZR-1, which doesn't fit GM RPO nomenclature.
GM has never confirmed nor denied rumors that "ZR" stands for "Zora's Racer."
The blown 6.2 also looks like the engine that will power the next Cadillac CTS-v, rather than something based off of GM's new high-feature overhead cam V-8 debuting in '09.

Well, it seems the ZR1/ZR-1 moniker is going to represent Vettes with exceptional performance. So, IMO, the "ZR1" being used again raises the awareness of the moniker; identifying a particular Vette not to be taken lightly - a Vette that stands out among the rest, as it were. That ain't all bad, guess.
Having said that, in terms of having the additional distinction of a "state of the art" design, the C4 Zs are still "The King", IMO - point being one can bolt on a supercharger to just about anything - nothing new (i.e. revolutionary) about that. Apparently, GM thinks HP is all that is needed to put a car into "Z" status among car lovers...But, we know different - don't we?;)

According to Motor Trend, Chevrolet shouldn't bother. The Nissan GT-R has already blown its doors in. Imagine an AWD car that runs 11.7 @ 149mph. Talk about a crap 60' time. :sign10:

Two GT-R "Black Mask" test mules being transported by truck in Japan
GT-R Test mules have been spotted on the Nürburgring, frequently alongside a 2006 Porsche 911 Turbo; speculated as being used by Nissan as a benchmark car. Sources have expressed that the car is capable of lapping the Nürburgring in the 7 minute range[13] [1] . Nissan has confirmed a Nurburgring lap time of 7 minutes 38.54 seconds, and have released a video of the lap[14][15].The tire is Bridgstone RE070. or, the run flat tire[16][17].Nissan is reportedly going after the previous lap record of the Porsche Carrera GT.[18]

The GT-R has undergone road testing around the southwest United States, with sightings in New Mexico[19] and California. As was the case in the Nurburgring, the car was followed by a 911 Turbo. The GT-R has also been sighted doing laps at Infineon Raceway and Laguna Seca. At Laguna Seca, the GT-R posted an unofficial lap time of 1 minute 39.62 seconds, a time marginally faster than the 911 Turbo following it which was timed at 1 minute 39.89 seconds[20]

The calculators I am using confirm about a 470-500 fwhp for a car weighing 4000lbs w/driver. So how does that equal a car (C6 Z06) weighing 700lbs less at the same fwhp?

So let the GM learn from Japaneez how to creat performance engine
if this HP is with V6 , so with V8 would be 550HP , and its still under 5.7 L  .... love those DOHC.

the c6z06 is a full second faster in the 1/4 mile--
much better torque = acceleration hp= top end
no doubt the AWD helps in the handling department looking at the track times.

Yep, Ranger over on CF ran a 10 in his own personal car. THink he has the fastest time for a stock C5Z06 also.
