FELLOWS, LEHTO LEAD AS AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES MOST POPULAR DRIVER AWARD VOTING ENTERS FINAL WEEK
BRASELTON, Ga. - American Le Mans Series champions Ron Fellows and JJ Lehto are the leading candidates so far as fan voting for the coveted Most Popular Driver Award enters its final week.
Fans can vote for their favorite driver on the professional sports car racing series online at www.americanlemans.com. Voting will continue until the checkered flag falls on the season-ending Audi Sports Car Championships race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., Oct. 16.
The name of the award recipient will remain a closely-guarded secret until being revealed at the American Le Mans Series "Night of Champions" awards banquet in Monterey, Calif., Oct. 17.
Fellows, driver for the factory Chevrolet Corvette team who has already won the GTS class driving title this season for an ALMS record third straight year, has received 19 percent of the votes cast by fans thus far in the balloting process. Lehto, driver for ADT Champion Racing in an Audi R8, is close behind Fellows in the race for the award with 14 percent of the votes. The Finnish driver has already clinched the LMP1 class driving title, his first in six years of racing on the ALMS.
Also receiving strong support in the voting process is James Weaver, driver of the Dyson Racing Lola in the LMP1 class, who has received 13 percent of the votes. Johnny O'Connell, teammate to Fellows at Corvette Racing and co-champion in the GTS class, is next with 10 percent of the votes.
The Most Popular Driver Award was established in the American Le Mans Series for the 2003 season. Jan Magnussen won the inaugural award.
