So I am dreaming of what my next z should be. I remember some (not a lot) of C4 Zr-1 that had high over lap cams and sound great at idle and at 7,000. I couldn't find the YouTube videos. Anyone have good sound videos of their or others cammed Z's? Also I never driven a cammed Z. How the power curve/drivability.

I have been thinking about this lately as well. Although in most cases, I believe heads are ported along with the cams. I have everything opened up, but the heads. The idea of the changed idle with cams and the shifted power range is still intriguing.
I hate to not try it if I already had the engine out of the car and cam covers off, but it is probably a cart before the horse idea, without ported heads.

The only thing I don't love about LT5 vs SBC is the amazing noises a high compression wide duration cam sounds on a SBC. Just curious about similar duration on LT5. Thanks @xfireZ51. Sounds good. Any revs or runs?
Also is that still 350 CID?

The sound of a cammed SBC is due to the necessity for high lift/ long duration to get the breathing. 4 valves do that for the LT5, so cam profile can be relatively mild in comparison for similar or better performance.
Yes its a stock block 5.7L. Dyno?d at 454rwhp@6875rpm and 402rwtq@5300rpm.

Yes it is. The video was b4 tuning. Makes u think of what GM could have done continuing to develop that platform. Its the way it should have come from the factory.

You can find the specs of Petes cams here: https://zr1pete.wordpress.com/services/
Pepmeier Engines does custom tool steel cam blanks that are machined to your specification.

My '94 has custom Web-Cam camshafts designed by a previous owner.
I believe they're roughly the following @ 0.050 lift. Not sure on the LSA.
(Edited per Todd's observations.)
Intake: 238* duration, .435" lift.
Exhaust: 221* duration, .432" lift.
Idle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhmimYEVaQA

I believe they're roughly the following @ centerline. Not sure on the LSA.
Intake: 275* duration, .435" lift.
Exhaust: 248* duration, .432" lift.

The lift figures look reasonable for welded cams. Those duration numbers, though, don't make sense. 275 degrees intake would have to be seat-to-seat (total) duration. Most people refer to the .050" duration numbers, which would be something much less, around 230 degrees? Stock is 214 primary / 228 secondary.
248 exhaust wouldn't be a reasonable duration @ .050" lift, but also too short for total duration. i'd be curious to see the cam card on those.

As was said before, there are three ways I know of to do cams on the LT5.
1) regrinding stock cams. Several guys go this route, especially on a stock displacement engine. In this type, the base circle of the cam is ground smaller by, say .030" maybe more, which translates into more lift and ability to cut it with more duration. The concern here is taking up the added clearance to the bucket lifter... there is only so much travel. Can require a valve job to raise the stem height.
2) welded stock cams. Not as prevalent, although I think one of the tuners uses that method. Web cams is the typical provider of this service. I don't have any first hand experience with welded cams.
3) new cores. These are usually machined from billet, although there were a limited number of unfinished chill-cast iron OEM cores out there several years ago. I use billet steel cores, made from high quality tool steel. These are expensive, but can be tailored to any profile needed for the application.

Cool. Thanks for posting that. Those all seem to be 238-239 ish duration at .050. That seems reasonable, although generally on 4-valve engines the exhaust duration would be significantly less than the intake duration.
.435 lift. I'm thinking these are welded cams, since you said Web Cams.

Yes, the person who designed the profile told me they were made by Web. The first three pages of the PDF say Intake and are 238-239 at 0.050 now that I'm looking at that line. The last few pages say Exhaust and have 220-221 listed at 0.050. Is 238/220 more what you'd have expected to see? The car's secondaries have been deleted.
