This question doesn't make sense but I can't seem to find out looking through my manuals.....How does the ashtray door stay open? Should it catch on something, making it stay open?

There is a spring that holds it open.

Like Secondchance said there is a spring located on the hinge.

If you look at the 6th picture (underside of a used shifter bezel) on a large screen you can see the spring at its location.
