It looks like my rear hatch weatherstrip could use replacing. Not too bad, just needs replacing. I found this on ebay and am curious what everybody thinks about it. Has anyone ever used it? Where would a person go to get some weatherstripping if it isn't any good.
Thanks

John, on the rear hatch weather strip I insist on GM pieces. The aftermarket ones seem to always be a little "short" and don't fit right.

I changed mine with a GM replacement. I changed it by my self, but would have had an easier time of it had I had somebody to give me a hand. Just a little messy.
Mine needs replacing too. Is the one at mid america comparable in quality and price? Do they come with adhesive? How long does the replacement take for the average curb side mechanic. Thanks all. And thanks for the great people here.

I got mine (GM factory part) through Mid-America last year at Funfest (10% off), and it's a pretty easy job. Remove rear plastic trim pieces, remove the old weatherstrip, slide the new one in place, replace trim pieces. You'll need to undo the hatch struts one at a time to get the new weatherstrip in place. I did this by myself, wasn't that bad at all and took less than an hour. No sealer is needed, just remove the old one and slide the new one on. It does go a bit easier if you lay out the new weatherstrip in the sun for a bit to soften it up first.

I purchased a few pieces through Corvette Rubber. The outer door seals were GM. The door weatherstrips themselves were not in a GM package, but everything fit perfectly.

If you guys haven't already gotten the weatherstrip, here's one on Ebay from the seller I got mine from. Great fit and great price.

hey John, did your old one leak or was it hatched. on my cars the hatch leaks but the seal's looks mint? when i was helping craigs427 out when he got his 95 AB i told him to be careful washing around that area. i think he thought i was being a little to cautious. when he was done it looked like he took a firehose to the rear glass area. i didn't have to say i told you so, he already knew ha, ha. they just seem terrible though, huh.

My weatherstrip had separated. It looked like crap, so thought I woud try the one from Ebay. It fir great and was easy to install. I think I would go with GM on the other stuff though as I want my doors and top to fit right.

Just as an FYI, I have my original weatherstripping, and it looks like new. I take Aerospace 303 and apply it with a saturated rag once every year or so. It is non greasy so it does not attract dirt, and has UV protectant. I highly recommend it.

Gotta throw in my .02 here...I did all the weatherstrip on my 79Z28. The job was daunting to say the least. Tons of prep work removing the old stuff.....Anyway, I ordered GM pieces for one side and aftermarket pieces for the other. I did the drivers side like a year before the passenger side. I will tell you there is a difference. The GM pieces fit better & when you closed the window, there was no problem. The aftermarket stuff seemed too small & I had to stretch it to get the push pins to line-up. Then, the frikkin window would never close right. I couldnt get enough adjustment on it in order for it to fit "inside" the weatherstrip.....it kind of laid on top of it. Any high pressure water, even from a garden hose & it leaked.
The GM parts cost more than double!! Thats the crappy part. But, its worth it to have everyhting fit properly. Dont skimp on quality here...buy the GM pieces.

i know those 78-79 camaro's & trash cans were brutal with the trunk leaking right from brand new. G.M. had them lined up coming back for warrenty. a mechanic i knew back then told me they would replace the weatherstrip but the leaks wouldn't stop, only the customers would stop complaining for a little while ha, ha. i use silicone spray on all my weatherstrips to keep them supple, is that spelled right?, it works great but my hatch still leaks ha, ha.
