View Full Version : Resonator or not?

I'm getting ready to put a B&B cat-back on, and I've seen some guys not running the resonator (with various systems). Any pros or cons? It wouldn't be with an X pipe in it's place, just straight pipes from the transmission back to the mufflers.

Without a resonator you will have increased cabin noise. However by eliminating it you should see a slight HP increase. I put an X-pipe on my B&B to help equalize pressure and create better scavenging. However the resonance can drive some people nuts during slow city driving, so you may want to hear how loud your system will be without it.
I have headers, no cats, x-pipe and the B&B. Ive gotten use to it and rarely drive at RPM's that will produce heavy resonance.

I ended up with what I think is the best of both worlds a muffler/resonator thats an xpipe. the car is quiet and has the hpto boot . the part i am talking about is onpg 66 of the summit catalog in the center at the top made by dyno max ck it out was my answer to quiet power

i replaced the resonator with an x-pipe...since i kept the cats, the difference in noise and resonnance is hardly noticeable,as the cats absorb much of the noise

when you add headers is when ths problem begins even with cats its drone time with an xpipe

i cut out the resonator and ran strait pipes to the mufflers, i think it sounds even better! you got to have a little rummmmmble to it. not bad on the noise at all, go for it!

I'm running the B&B with an X pipe behind a 415 with headers and no cats. It's a little loud inside, except for 1000 rpm where the resonance is terrible. The sound outside the car is wonderful.

Done. Just came back from the shop. They didn't have the stuff on hand to do the X pipe, so that can wait until it's header time. Just straight pipes from the cats on back. Sounds really good. The interior resonance isn't too bad - or maybe my SS Camaro just had me conditioned to that kind of noise.

If I read his post right sounds like he is just running pipe and no mufflers wow thats gotta be loud:mrgreen:

The tolerance of noise is very subjective where as one person wears ear plugs, the other enjoys the deep muscular sound of a B&B system. When you get headers it will get much louder, especially if you dump the cats.
As to the x-pipe I'd buy a 3' one from B&B rather than try to have a shop fabricate it. If they have a 3' mandrel bend machine they could do it, but why not buy one already made with presumably good manufacturing and QC.

Let me clarify - I put the B&B mufflers on, I meant by straight pipes there is no resonator, just pipes from the cats to the mufflers. Open pipes with nothing...wow, that would be ungodly.

oh glad you got muffs or we would have to learn sign language to say hi:mrgreen:

That's my setup and it's not as loud as you might think....except for some moderate drone from 1400-1700, it's actually pretty easy to live with....now when headers go on, I'll probably have to make a change.

Peav, after those great times at b/g ya gotta do the headers and port inj housings and plenum . then man it could be 11 city. but you i think will need so muff w/the headers:mrgreen:

I've have been looking at the B&Bs at 3" inlets. I read that SW makes an Xpipe that will slide onto the B&B exhaust.

I agree Jon, and it's only a matter of time b4 I pop the skins off my engine and send `em to Jeff....I'm thinking either B&B w/x pipe or Corsa's to go behind the headers & cats.
