View Full Version : My rising shifter

So, when you hammer the throttle, the shifter rises, a lot. I thought maybe I just didn't remember this happening.

While in Carlisle, I lent Mark from Mirrock my car and he questioned it, so I figured there really was a problem.
I thought it might be motor mounts. It sounds like they are a pain to do, and hard to come by.

I was ready to go to a maintenance day in wazoo land for some help with this.

I mentioned it to Marc H in Carlisle. He said the C beam was loose.
Guess what? The C beam was loose.
Dropped the exhaust and tightened the bolts per Marc's instructions.
It's raining, so I haven't driven it yet. - Steve

Always good to have Marc around for a little advice. Have you installed Bill B's C beam plates? I understand that helps. Fortunately I never ran into this problem on my old Z's, but maybe that's because Marc was maintaining them and I just never knew of a problem. Glad you got yours figured out. --Bob

I do have the beam plates. Don't know if that helps or not. Marc did have me over torque them a little. I think torque spec is 37 pounds. They are pretty big bolts, that doesn't seem like much.

Glad you found the issue Steve, come down for a Wazoo maintenance day anyhow.

I haven't driven it yet, but....
Maintenance day would be fun. Someday.
And thank you to Marc. I hate to ask him work questions on a social day.

Steve,

A ?tell? on motor mounts is having the D/S exhaust tips sitting lower than the P/S. Had that problem and always needing to adjust and tighten hangers. One of the times we pulled the motor, I asked Pete to checks motor mounts. P/S was busted. Replaced it, and now exhaust is straight.
I had rising shifter once and it was the CBeam plates. However, the motor mount could have been a contributing factor to that. If the shifter starts rising again, I would check mounts.

I haven't see a Z yet where at least one (if not both) of the engine mounts haven't been broken. If the engine has never been out or at least closely inspected, my money is on a broken engine mount. It's amazing how much higher they sit with new mounts.

So, maybe I haven't fixed the problem yet. I'll find out next time I drive it.
Any good sources for motor mounts?

You know if you?re going to change the motor mounts while you are there you just might as well go all the way and make a 410 out of it. Don?t you think?

Absolutely logical.

Alright, right over my head. Make a 410 out of it? Gears? Cubes?

Has anyone tried these Afterdark motor mounts?

High-performance direct replacement engine mount kit for 90-95 ZR1 LT5 and 92-96 LT1/LT4 Corvettes.

This unique mount design still uses bushings, but they are smaller and firmer than the large factory rubber isolators. They offer a nice balance of vibration damping vs. engine movement for most performance street applications where additional strength and support is desired without the extreme harshness of solid mounts.

This mount design comes pre-assembled in the factory C4 mounting position, but uses a unique adjustable aluminum spacer design. The engine can be lowered up to 3/4" from stock in 1/4" increments if desired. The engine can also be shifted fore-aft 1/2" in either direction in 1/4" increments.

This mount assembly is lighter and smaller than factory mount for better header clearance as well.

All parts are powder coated and anodized black.

I believe Young is referring to the rear gear set. Or maybe what he meant to type was 415. For the cost of a 415 engine, you could probably do a 4.10 gear change for yourself and eleven of your friends with Vettes who needed 4.10s as well!

Finally took Bertha out. Shifter doesn't budge. Marc was right (not that I had any doubts).
I owe you dinner Marc. Even felt good at 130. Thanks everybody for your help and suggestions. - Steve

Q on the beam plates: If the beam plates are used, I would suspect that the issue with cold flowing (denoted by the ridge build-up around the circumference of the washers under the nuts - primarily on aluminum parts or parts with significant thrust forces applied) wouldn't be and issue as the plates are steel; the nuts/washers do not rest directly on the aluminum C-beam, but rather the beam is sandwiched between the steel plates and the transmission...Right?

Those are some BIG bolts (fastening the C-beam to the trans and differential housings). I "leaned on torque wrench" a bit more than the stock recommendation intended for aluminum C-beams w/o steel plates. The shifter has never budged (risen) in 10+ years FWIW.

Correct Paul, the beam plates are between the bolt and the C beam, where a washer would go. I also "leaned" on mine a little extra.
