View Full Version : Wazoo to the rescue AGAIN

Driving to lunch with Wazoo member Dan (dandt67) to meet another Wazoo member Ed (Hawk), my 92Z started to sputter and then died at the traffic light. No joy, it would turn over but struggled to run and continued to stall. I had my fuel pump jumper and put that in but no change. At that point I had to get the car out of the busy intersection so Ed, Dan and a good Samaritan pushed me out of the turn lane and into an office parking lot. At this point I put in a SOS call to Jim (QB93Z) and he arrived in a short time with tools and a grin. This is what the brotherhood is all about. Am I going to call AAA to tow me????. hell no, we can fix it right here. Jim connected a gauge to check the fuel pump pressure and it was 0 so we knew the problem. We removed the fuel pumps and guess what, one hose was disconnected. Reconnected the hose and tightened the clamp, put the fuel pump assembly back in and presto, it?s alive again. Thanks again Jim and thanks to Dan and Ed for lending a helping hand. Time for lunch and I am buying!
Wazoo is a tremendous example of what "brotherhood" really means! Good on ya mates!

Hi Marty,
Looks like the 7000+ RPM runs put some pressure on the fuel hose clamps but overall, your/my car is well taken care of and happy. You are 100% correct, typical Jim to the rescue. I am so very lucky to live in Wazoo land and to have make lifelong friends from owning #246. No fear driving a 30 year old car with just under 110,000 miles, I know Wazoo has my back. When you think of all the times Jim, Phil, Yun, Rich, Nelson, Glenn and the rest of Wazoo have come to the rescue of somebody in the brotherhood; be it at one of our monthly Wazoo maintenance days at Jim's home, the Holiday Inn parking lot in Bowling Green, the Smokey Mountains, at Carlisle or on the highway, this group is very special. Pic of Jim arriving 35 minutes after my SOS and he lives 35 minutes away from where I broke down! Stopped what he was doing, had tools in the car and was on the way.....priceless!!

Awesome story - great that you posted it Charlie. I should be moving to WAZOO country rather than up north.

Not surprised with the 7th cav coming to rescue. Had it not been for the Wazoo, I would have given up my 94 about 10 years ago. Learned a lot and had a great time learning not to mention great friendships formed.

On top of all the good things everybody mentioned we have a fuel pump access point that rivals anything a fuel injection car made since the 80s doesn't have. If you have ever had to drop a fuel tank on most anything else to change a fuel pump... its no contest... the C4 design wins every time.

Really awesome story! I love the close-knit group of Z owners. That's one reason I wanted a ZR-1 for so long!
We need to form an extension group down here in Kansas City - KAZOO?? :) (obviously MIZZOU would be confusing!)

Let's use this as a teaching moment, fuel pumps. The pumps I have in my car are Performance Electric P240KC purchased from Rock Auto for $17.64 each. They come complete with the strainer sock. In fact, I have two new spare units in my car just in case. When we were reattaching the hose that slipped off we noticed that they do not have a ridge on the outlet port where you would place the clamp. This is how the rubber hose slipped off over time. Dan checked his spare fuel pump that he recently purchased also from Rock Auto. He got the Delphi FE0039 which costs $53.79 and does not include the strainer but it DOES have a ridge on the outlet port. Might have to change out to the Delphi so this problem does not happen again.

Boy you can say that again. There is a lot to like in my C7 Z06 but one of them is not fuel tank access. The dual saddlebag tanks sit directly behind the seats, and one has to drop the transmission/transaxle, driveline and a bunch of other stuff to get it out. And some 2016 C7s had a propensity for a crack near the fuel filler that leaks, so much so that we got 10 year/120,000 mile warranties on the procedure. Great that the C4s have that fuel pump access and that this group has all the wisdom to take advantage of it. --Bob

Good Job Jim!
Nice to know the detail about the ridge needed to keep the clamp/hose attached. Both of mine were replaced, but do not know with what.
Anyone up for a New Brunswick Wazoo meet? Steak and Lobster? Fresh Canadian Beer?

So great to see the community support.
I always see the posts about the Wazoo group and events. Anyone care to give a bit of detail about the Wazoo maintenance days? Have been considering setting something similar up in Houston, either with C4 ZR1s or Fbodies.
How often are they held? What level of maintenance is normally done? Any preplanning work to make it go smoothly? Any just overall lessons learned in hosting the event?

We get together as needed maybe around once every two months or so. As for the level of service, pretty much everything from an oil change to dropping in a LT5 - brakes, injectors, coils, starters, heater core, navigation unit, etc.
Good host is a must and car lift and well stocked tools help.

We have also changed out clutch, replaced Dual Mass Flywheel with lightweight aluminum one, changed stock gears to 4:10's, headers, exhaust, installed shift light, LED interior and exterior lighting, weatherstripping. Whatever somebody needs, we can usually take care of it. The amount of talent and knowledge in our group is amazing! If we spend most of the time on your car, you get to buy the pizza.

Is it bad form to tow mine down and drive it back? :)
I'll buy the best pizza in the area. Best wings to go with it.

Well? If you tow your Z down to the Wazoo land, we will probably waive pizza in view of the transportation expense.
What issues are you having?

Really just tuning and drivability type stuff. Though I'm sure I could always find things... :)

Thanks for the feedback, was a bit curious because as we know repairs can go wrong and people can try to take advantage of each other. However, that comradery and support is just amazing, hats off to you guys.
Don't quite have the space currently to host, but we're planning a shop for the next house. When I was in HS I had several friends who were also into cars. Our house was the place to work on them because my dad is a car guy too so we had all the tools and experience. Now my brother and I still work on cars together, but the type of fun you guys are having is a place I'd like to get back to.

Tuning is a bit tricky. Even my limited knowledge tells me wide band O2 sensors (welded in to exhaust manifold or headers), ability to read mixture, timing, etc., a lot of knowledge and experience and ability to burn EPROM.

Sorry. Not that kind of tuning. The old fashioned boring kind. Just the tweaks to get it running right again.

Already done. And wires. Coils. Vacuum lines. etc etc.
Just think it needs some fine tuning to be it's best.

I have been tinkering with cars for four decades but no where near what I got into since running into Wazoo guys. Having knowledgeable guys around you made me more ambitious and courageous and?
