From the earliest days of the ZR-1 the number of 1990 model year ZR-1's produced was reported as 3049. This number is said to include 17 pilot cars and or engineering vehicles which had the first 17 VIN numbers 0001 - 0017 just as production cars did. Sometime after 2004 the Black Book changed the number therein from 3049 to 3032. The zr1netregistry is reporting 1990 production at 3032 also.

Can anyone shed some light on the confusion about how many were actually produced and what event led to lowering the previously reported production number? Has anyone found a 1990 ZR-1 with a VIN above 3032?

There is a discussion on the ZR-1 facebook page on this subject.

This is the big discussion I started in the Facebook group and also have ongoing in the norwegian Corvette club group.

I have emailed some and sendt PM's on Messenger to others, so far I have been told 3049 by those being around the cars and the production process back then.

We are many who now raise the same question as to why the number wss decreased by 17 cars to 3032...

I find it very interesting to be honest since all ZR-1 history is very exciting and look forward to learning why and when it was edited.

I appreciate this being posted in this forum too.1803718038

Maybe I misunderstand the problem but doesn't it seem obvious that they just ceased the pre-production cars from counting?
Because it's cars they built but never with the purpose to sell them.
I feel my answer is way too simple to be the answer that's needed.

I sent Roy an email reply, but without the others citing their source, we are unable to investigate further. 3032 is verified by GM?s VIN data, which as stated, included a number of GM cars in the beginning of the production run. One possible explanation is that other numbers grouped ?EX? cars into the 1990 count - that?s just a guess, but again, without citing their source?.

There are other posts on this forum which provide more insight into the GM production sequence, but do not address the source of the disparity.

Regards,
Mark
