Have fuel Pump problems? There is a solution! A conversion to a single high performance pump. Invested a LOT of time researching & building one for my ZR-1. Decided to see how much interest there would be in more of them. All stainless construction. High performance Racetronics Turbine Fuel Pump.
Specs & notes:
ZR1 ZR-1 LT5 New Fuel Sending Unit, Single Pump Conversion
? Entire unit made of Stainless steel, No more corrosion!
? All power leads upgraded to 16 gage for cooler running.
? All new High Performance, corrosion resistant Bulkhead.
? All New electrical Connectors upgraded; corrosion resistant.
? Simple plug-n-play installation, you just need to unplug one lead from the ECU, instructions provided.
? OEM single pump capacity = Nom 18.8 GPH @ 5 Amps.
? OEM Both Pumps Capacity = Nom 26.7 GPH @ 10 Amps.
? New Performance pump = max 67 GPH Capacity @ 12 Amps.
? System combines power leads from both OEM pumps to power the single Performance pump, no rewiring required, plug-n-play!
? New Racetronics high performance fuel pump installed.
? New pump is Turbine Type for long, sustained running at full power!
? Noise reducing sleeve installed on pump.
? Rated for up to 550HP at the crank.
? Fuel Supply tube modified for extra flow.
? Includes new tank flange seal/gasket.
I just added all stainless installation hardware to the kit.
These are not cheap to build and they take a couple hours to build. I decided that $400 shipped would be a fair asking price. Please PM me if you have any interest.

You should build a batch of them, it looks amazing, provides plenty of volume, should be bullet proof and is plug'n'play. What else do you want?
Great product!

Well after having trouble with the stock fuel system (two pumps) in my ZR-1
I was going own make my own based on marks write up. But Flyman 27
offered single pump setup for the ZR-1. Well that made It easier for me a
already made system that I could install with out to much trouble (getting
out the two pump system).Brought the single pump system and installed
It. Works great, but I noticed that the fuel pressure would drop as soon as
I turned off car. Not a big deal, turns out there is no drain back valve . OK
now my engine is a 368 cu.in. motor with 12 to 1 compression. Flyman 27
said just install a check valve from tank output to the engine.
And problem solved, holds pressure starts in about 3-4 seconds
and pressure holds for restart.
I'am very happy with this system and would recommend it if your having
issues with dual pump system.

I am very interested as well. What is the one wire that has to be disconnected from the ECM? How do you suggest disconnected it? What does the computer know/do? Also how best to order your set up. BTW. I agree it looks like very nice work!

Flyman 27

The pumps come with step-by-step instructions on how to unplug the ECM connector, it literally takes a minute, very easy.
You get your choice of a Racetronix turbine pump or a comparable Walbro gear pump. Same price.
The Racetronix turbine is pretty much dead quiet and is made in Canada.
The Walbro is a gear pump so it can be heard similar to the OEM pump, it is made in USA.
The pump is a very easy install.
You will want to order a new boot usually, they are stiff & tear easily if OEM.

do these need a one way valve installed in line, i read from here somewhere where he had to do that due to long crank to reprime fuel lines?

Flyman 27

It's a matter of choice.
If you want a check valve for the Racetronix pumps, I can include it for free.
The Walbro pump has an internal check valve.
It's your choice.

I don?t understand that. My car with your Racetronix pump works perfectly and starts the same as before. If there was a delay I would not mind it at all since it would allow more oil priming which I do anyway (depress all the way down and hold while cranking) if not started recently. I remember you offered the check valve but I don?t need or want it. Thanks for an awesome product.

Installed the single pump from Flyman on my 1990, was about an hour job in total. What's really nice is that he's already done the wiring on the tank side so the sending unit plugs directly into the factory plug, no wiring needed on the tank side. The only thing needed is to remove the wire at the ECM, which takes a paperclip and a minute to push the pin out then cover with heat shrink. Happy I went ahead with the upgrade, an hour now will probably save me hours of frustration later when the originals decide to give out.

Dan, have u ever measured if there was any difference in fuel pressure between the single v dual pump setup.

Dan, have u ever measured if there was any difference in fuel pressure between the single v dual pump setup.

Short answer: No difference for me

I have a fuel PSI gauge in my Z and had been pretty familiar with my fuel PSI during various.. activities :) . Recently bought one of these through Dan's ebay (didn't realize he had them listed here). I had no issues with my dual pumps, but my sending unit tracings were damaged and my fuel level didn't read correctly. So my comparison is probably accurate for both systems functioning properly

Normal operation it sits around 45 PSI for me. WOT the PSI jumps up to around 52.

Previously I had an opportunity to talk to Haibeck about the single pump conversion and he said as long as it stays above 48 PSI at full throttle and 6000 rpm then it is working well. I have not experienced anything to make me disagree.

I have the racetronix version.

I installed one of your fuel pump conversions last year which ran well for 6 months or so. I I currently have a fuel pressure issue which kicks me out of full power due to low pressure (code 61, lean). The idle pressure is showing 38 psi, thinking it should be around 47-48. Have you any idea what the problem may be other than a faulty pump?

Andre'

Flyman 27
01-18-2024, 04:50 PM
1) Using the connector plug under the hood at the harness can you check the amperage being pulled by the pumps? At idle & rpms?
2) Did you change both the relays when you changed the pump? Sometimes they are worn & won't pull full amperage.
3) Idle pressure should be around 43PSI give or take a little.
4) Also, pull the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator & see if you smell gas, if so, your regulator may have failed.

Please let me know what you find.

Dan

I will be leaving the country on Saturday & will not be back until Feb 5. I will not have access to the forum.
After you verify the info above, if the relays are new & the amperage is appripriate being drawn from the pump. The most likely culprit I can think of is the plastic fuel line clamp at the Fuel Pump. That would limit the max pressure the system would see.
Haven't seen one break yet, you would be the first, but it is more likely than a turbine pump failing.
IF The clamp has failed, replace it with a narrow steel clamp, don't overdo it & don't use a heavy clamp. You will break the pump trying to tighten it. The nozzle on the pump is not torque tollerant. Be very careful.
I am confident that you are experiencing one of the above issues. I have not seen one of these pumps fail yet and some guys have tons of miles on them.
IF you DO have a failed pump, I will replace it for you when I get back.
Please update theis forum or send me a PM on what you are finding.

These are the FP Relays I have been recommending and people have had good results with:

Dan,
After the first attempt at repair we replaced the secondary solenoid and fuel pressure regulator only because one was available. Upon start up we could only muster 31-32 psi at idle, and about 38 psi at 3500 rpm.
After removing your pump we did notice the clamp on the line connecting to the pump was broken, couldn't tell you if that happened on installation or removal.
Aaron Scott who is more of a corvette purist wanted to put two new Delphi pumps on the original assembly and clean up the faulty sending unit as this was the reason for replacement in the first place. So, after rebuilding and installation we were able to attain 42 psi at idle and 51 at 3500 rpm. We tested the car on the road and had the secondaries kick in without interruption or fault codes. The gas gauge also seems to be working for the time being.
I don't recall Aaron mentioning if he tested your pump for amp draw so I can't tell you if that was a problem.
I'm sorry I couldn't isolate a specific problem for you but do appreciate your feedback in helping me along the way.

I don't get it. I must be missing something.
I figured out that the only thing I could think of that could cause what you were seeing would be a broken fuel hose clamp at the pump output.
The mechanic removed the sending unit & found a broken fuel hose clamp at the pump (like I figured) & decided to replace the whole unit anyway? For a 50 cent broken hose clamp?

Purchased your fuel pump and had a local garage install it because the rebuilt fuel pump I tried got stuck during installation. Your pump got my ZR-1 running again. Problem now is it stumbles a bit if pushed hard with my vallet key turned off. It stumbles and acts like it is not getting any fuel at times with the valley key turned on. Any suggestions regarding what I did wrong?

Sorry, I did not get a not of your message, didn't see it.
Was the installation complete? Was the ECM terminal disconnected? This allows the power from the secondary circuit to add power to the single pump. Each single circuit supplies a max of 10A, the single pump can pull up to 17A under full power conditions, it needs both circuits.
Also, the second Fuel Pump relay or fuse may have failed or the relay is intermittant.

Let me know what you find.
Feel free to DM me, I am sure I will get the message then.

I just wanted to write a post in here that this fixed my issue right up! The build quality on this piece is astounding. I felt kinda bad putting the rubber boot back on top of it and hiding all that beautiful hardware.

One word of warning: When removing the old assembly be very careful and try not to bump or touch anything that has been submerged in fuel. I barely bumped the plastic zip tie that went around one of the fuel pumps on the old assembly and it crumbled and fell right into the tank. I had to go fishing for 34 year old zip tie pieces.
