I picked up this long block a few weeks ago.
It is from 90 #0116.
Some of you may remember the young guy from Texas who was resurrecting a flood car on You Tube about a year ago.
He ended up buying and installing Pete's 391.
This LT5 had seized secondaries, but otherwise ran fine.
I'm cleaning it up and it will be a "just in case" spare.

Always a good idea! Just a stupid question: which engine part shows the VIN on your first picture?
Is this at the bellhousing?
I was looking in vain to find it on mine. Thanks

That is a good score. I would not mind having an extra myself. A good plan if you plan to keep it forever.

VIN is on the passenger side of the block, where the bell housing mates up. You can see the bell housing line-up pin in the picture above.

So, here's what I need so far....
All 8 butterflies and the shaft bearings. If anyone has some serviceable take-offs from secondary delete projects, please let me know.

This is me living vicariously through you but, what do you think about making that engine the hotter one for performance to put in later down the line? It could be one you take your time with and do a little here and there while it is on the stand. Delete the secondaries for now. Maybe learn the process for head removal and send those out for porting at some point. A chance to replace the chains and other serviceable items. Replace all the gaskets and so on.
Could be a fun long term DIY project. I would have fun with something like that if I had a spare to tinker with. Like I said, living viacriously through you ha!

I really don't need to build a modified LT5. My car is at Marc's right now getting the full 415 treatment.
The plan for this engine is two-fold.
First is to familiarize myself with all the parts and construction. Hands-on is better than just reading the manual.
Second is to bring it back to stock operating condition. I'll slowly build it up with all the necessary wiring and such.
I have another spare coming that was a complete rebuild and is already secondary delete. It was someone else's project that was not completed. Lots of parts from Jerry's and ECM tuned by Marc. I'll post that one up when it gets here in the next week or two.

I have a full set of secondary butterflies, bearings, and linkage removed from a pair of unused NOS cylinder heads. Only thing missing are the shaft seals. PM your mailing address and I'll send them your way this week.

I pulled my secondaries and sent the parts to TomTom. He hasn't been here for a while, and sold his car. I have no idea if he still has the secondaries or not. Mystic knows how to get a hold of him.

I almost sold my "back up" last year. I parted out a blk/blk 91' back in 06'. The motor was destined for my 57' Nomad restomod project but someone wanted the car more than me...
Stock bottom end, full LPE treatment on the top end. I kept everything to hook it up and run it too. After parting out the rest of the car, it was free to me. I think I'll polish the cam covers and set it next to the Callaway in the future, so not parting out. They're not making any more....

Well that escalated quickly! Seems just like yesterday you made a thread over on CF about getting the car. White interior right? That is going to be one hell of a car when Marc is done with it.

My second bargain basement purchase came today.
This is a complete rebuilt LT5 from 90 # 2793.
It has already been converted to secondary delete.
It does need final assembly of some parts, but it's all there.
Came with wiring harness, ECU reprogrammed by Marc, Black label ZF6, Bell housing, Thermostat housing, water pipes, etc..... Only missing the AC compressor.
All that for 1/2 the price of a crate LT5.
Can anyone identify the headers on this engine? They are not originals that I can tell.
After taking a hard look at the first LT5 #0116, looks like it is going to be completely disassembled and redone. I'll tackle that after I finish the assembly of #2793.

Theres no air injection on the headers so they arent stock, although they do look like stock 1993-1995 manifolds with bolt on cats.
Need more detailed pics to be sure.

Ok guys, what's the trick to get the Cam Cover bolts out?
Nothing moving with a 30" breaker bar. I don't want to strip out the bolt heads.
No movement with one of those impact drivers (the one you hit with a hammer).
Engine is on a stand.

If you use an impact gun, you can center yourself directly over the bolt and focus on creating downward force while the impact gun hammers the bolts loose. Marc was not opposed to this method when I discussed it with him. I have a few. One has 300 ft lbs breakaway torque and the other is 1200.

The trick is a good brand torx bit (buy a few just in case) that fits snug and that won?t twist or crack. Then a good impact gun no extension using the same technique 1991 Corvette ZR-1 mentioned above.
I have broken a few my first time at it when I did it by hand and it sucks!
Good luck

My cam covers have small leaks and it drives me crazy. But I know a broken or stripped torx bolt would be ten times worse on my mental health. I dread having to remove them, especially from the passenger side but maybe it will be a next year project. I can only look at fine silver finish Marc can refinish the top end in so many times before I commit to a bad idea of trying to remove them.

That's method I used all cam out with no problems. The key is clean out the hole in the bolt and use a good torx bit with sharp points

Yes, I agree. The hammer impact is the perfect tool for jobs like this. The shock helps to loosen the bolt, the angle of the tool is easy to maintain and the hammer impact drives the too to the bottom of the torx hole at the same time the torque is applied. One of my favorite tools for several decades now. Actually gave each of my sons one for Christmas this year.

Am I going crazy or were you removing secondaries from one of the engines? I feel like I read a list where someone removed the throttle shaft bearings but a metal shell remained in the bores. I was wondering how those were removed post removal of bearings.

There's a lot going on.... LT5 0166 was from a flood car. The secondary valves were froze shut. The bearings are all shot. So .... The heads are coming off for a valve job. I'll remove the secondaries before sending to the machine shop. I have a new set of valves, shafts, bearings and seals for reassembly.
LT5 2793 came with secondary delete heads. I would have left these alone, but the PO modified the cam cover breather holes, so they will no longer work on a stock ZR-1.
Rebuilt heads with operating secondaries from 0116 will go on the 2793 block.
I have a brand new set of heads which will be used on the 0116 block.
Modified secondary delete heads from 2793 will be for sale at a heavily discounted price once I get them off (a few months from now).
Hope that's confusing enough.....

Are you doing all the work yourself? I go back and forth on doing secondary delete. I like the idea of no longer having to worry about a failing actuator which is no longer manufactured. If it were all 100% factory and they actually still made the actuator, I would want to preserve it.

I had Marc remove the secondaries on my '95 when he did his 510 package. I never missed them and obviously never had any problems with them. --Bob

Yes, I'll be doing all my own work, other than machine shop services. It's slow going right now, as my garage shop is around 25*. I can only work about an hour out there before I'm too cold.
The infamous Hello Kitty blanket...... Before it was in Texas, I believe it came with Pete's 391 that replaced LT5 #0116.

It is only fitting with the provenance of the Hello
Kitty blanket that it be used in place of the cargo mat for whatever car the LT5 goes into. [emoji12]🤙🏼
