View Full Version : Repair options for rear quarter directly over wheel

PO seems to have done a bondo repair of some damage to the rear quarter just over the left rear wheel. The bondo repair has failed and a crack is beginning to present in the paint.
This panel appears to be continuous across the back of the car (rear quarters and rear deck lid are one solid piece)?
My questions are:
Does anyone have experience removing this panel and replacing it? Is completely bolted in? Or bolted and sealed at edges? Are there any glued / epoxy seams of substantial strength?
What model years of ZR1 would be a matching donor for a 1990 (if it can be reasonably replaced)? Did the dimensions or fastening of this piece change at all from 1990 to later years?
Any guidance greatly appreciated!

Give Gordon a call at Houston Corvette he should have experience with C4s. He did a great job painting my rear bumper.

The rear quarter panel is replaceable in sections R & L with the seams under the halo down the rear of the door edge to the rub strip and at the gas cap door opening I am fairly sure the panels are the same 90-95, not a easy job as it is bonded on.
If you go with just repairing your panel be sure they use an SMC compatible product.
Good Luck.

Thanks very much for the reply.
I feel like the best course with this one is a replacement, as the underside is mush and it seems like they filled it with bondo, but maybe not much resin. So it would seem the old repair would need to be cut out? This would make matching the body lines pretty difficult and probanly still leave a weak spot prone to future issues.
I don't know what challenge it will be disbonding the panel from this one and a donor, but i can see how that could be easier than trying to perform the in place repair and make it look decent.
I believe i will be looking for a donor. Just need to set up the drive.
Another question that I think i know the answer to, but wish i was wrong on: are the quarters ZR1 specific? I'm guessing the extra width arrives at the edges, and not the middle for ZR1 vs. standard c4.

Quarters are ZR-1 specific. I am about to do this exact same job on my 91. From my research, there is some trickiness to get the quarter unsandwiched from the halo. It is all bonded/glued.
I have both left and right quarters in off a ?90 (red) available if interested. I am in Denver. PM me if you?d like.

This process is a SMC repair only. All SMC repairs start from the backside up vs. the Bondo from the top old school way. Without tackling the repair correctly the area will flex and crack just liked happened.
