Lyndi and I have been waiting patiently to get out for another Corvette Adventure and now is the time.

The 2021 Purple ZR-1 Road Trip to Utah begins tomorrow. We will be heading west on I-70 and I-80, headed for Park City, Utah. Our plan for this road trip is to take it slow and spend more time relaxing and not so much driving every day.

We will be driving about 440 miles a day to get to Park City in 5 days. Stay tuned as we are - On The Road Again....

Today was an adventure! Everything was going great until I was doing 70 in heavy truck traffic and had to choose between hitting a 3?x3?x4? board OR dive into the guard rail.

I chose the board and the result was a slam that shook the whole car. I limped to a stop, convinced I had blown at least one tire.

To be continued?.

After a quick inspection? no blow out. Got in traffic again to get to a safer place. The car had a lot of vibration above 20 mph.

We Googled a tire store and got the Z up on a lift and found the front left tire was badly bent.

We were between Columbus and Springfield, OH, we called a Chevy dealer who gave us the name of a wheel store that might help us.

We drove back to Columbus and found the Best shop I have ever seen. They immediately got the wheel off, pulled the tire an spun the rim. The options were: try to straighten it, or mount the tire on a spare rim (95 stock) or drive back to Home and swap a rim.

We decided try to straighten the wheel. They worked their magic. We ended with a wheel and tire that balanced with a 2 oz weight. We got back on the road by 5 pm.

Jim

You are right that UP is planning another another run for the #4014 Big Boy. Current plan is for it to start in August. #4014 rolled through Lake Bluff in 2019 and hundreds showed up to watch it. Took a great video of it charging by and I even went out to the West Chicago yard (with about 10,000 other railfans) where it camped for a couple days. I know Paul Workman did too. When you get to Cheyenne you might see if you can get a tour of the Heritage Steam repair shop. Don't know if that is possible but worth a phone call. Here is the link to the UP Heritage Steam website. When they actually get rolling you can track the engine's progress. Have a great trip Jim and Lyndi. --Bob

Jim,

Glad to hear the damage was minimal. I would have chosen a board as opposed to a guard rail also.

Hello ZR-1 Net Registry...

I got the WIFI working connected to our Verizon HotSpot and I can access the Internet again.

Now, to start the Journey properly, we took a photo of the Purple Z fully loaded and ready to get underway in the garage:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/2021_Day_1_Utah_(3).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/468f19ee-cadd-4970-8d7e-d4129a59d3bc)

We drove west on I-70 across the Alleghany Mountains of southern PA and crossed in to Ohio. Most of the trip to Columbus was flat land and farming:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/2021_Day_1_Utah_(159).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/8ecac300-a82c-4dd5-ad83-2b204fda8be2)

We continued west on I-70. Just west of Columbus we had a serious incident by running over a piece of wood cribbing in the left hand lane in heavy traffic. We were able to get the bent front left rim straightened and ready to travel by 5 PM. Lyndi and I would have had to return to home and swap out the rim from one of my spares and then drive 850 miles to get "caught up" to our scheduled trip plan.

Lyndi and I can not say enough Thank You's to the crew at Wheel Medic, Inc, 2971 Silver Drive, Columbus OH. Our mechanic, Bandon, gave us his full attention and using a torch and a wheel press, straighten the rim.

We made it to our first-day destination of Springfield on time. We relaxed in one of our new favorite bars, the Wayside Tavern and Patio. It is not fancy but the people were very friendly, the beer was cold and the food was good:

Day 2 - We left Springfield, OH (the Capitol of OH) early and drove to Moline, IL. The weather was marginal most of the day and we had a little rain in Illinois.

We did not know that I-65 through Indianapolis was completely closed. We had to back-track on I-70 a little to get onto the beltway around the city on I-485 to get back on I-65 North.

We drove through Champaign, IL, (where my Mother was born), and Peoria, IL, the home of Caterpillar and other heavy industry. Along the way we saw many, many, many farms.

As we got to Moline, IL the weather improved and we spent some time hiking along the Mississippi River and visiting the John Deere Store. Unfortunately the John Deere Pavilion was closed due to Covid.

Day 3 - We drove from Moline, IL to Grande Island, Nebraska. Our first stop after getting on I-80 West was at The World's Largest Truck Stop. It was worth a stop. We had fun looking at all the displays and merchandise and restaurants:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/2021_5_20_Moline_Grand_Island_(163).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/2519f056-5f83-4461-9640-cbdb04c599c7)

There is a very large building housing the Truck Museum. Unfortunately we were too early and the museum was not open. So we will see it next time.

During the day we got rained on four times but traffic moved well except one "single lane" section for bridge construction.

We stopped in Des Moines, Iowa to visit the Des Moines Sculpture Garden and the Des Moines Art Center. My favorite sculpture Nomande, by Juanse Plensa was a steel structure composed of letters:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/by_Jaume_Plensa_Nomande.JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/681381a4-0c56-4859-be48-27d78673d5ce)

At the Art Center we were very impressed with the extensive permanent collection that was on display. Entrance to the museum is free and the facilities were excellent.

Our favorite paintings were "Automat" by Edward Hopper:

And an beautiful portrait of two children by John Singer Sargent:

Day 4: We enjoyed a wonderful drive on the Sandhills Journey, NE-2 from Grand Island, Nebraska to Alliance, NE. This route is considered one of the top ten scenic drives in the US. We then drove southwest to Cheyenne, WY and checked in to the Historic Plains Hotel. I will post some pictures tomorrow when we get to Park City.

Thank you for the kind remarks.

NE-2 follows one of the main lines of the Central Pacific Railroad. We passed at least 12 trains during our drive. Coal made up most of the traffic including at least 1500 coal cars headed East.

Here are some pictures from the trip from Cheyenne to Pack City, Utah:

We got on I-80 for the whole trip. Overall the trip was wonderful and we had no problems. There was a little morning fog, but not too bad. The scenery on I-80 is fantastic!! We crossed the Continental Divide at 7000 feet.

In Green River, Wyoming we stopped to watch some trains. In the Central Pacific's Green River Yard there is a pedestrian cross-over that we enjoy.

The train traffic on a Saturday was light, but after a 20 minute wait, we were rewarded with an East bound mixed freight train:

Day 8 - Tuesday: Our plan for the day was to drive two Utah Scenic Byways (UT-92) and UT-190) across the Wasatch Mountains to Provo, Utah and back to Heber City and Park City. But things didn't work out that way. The high elevation portions of the Byways were still closed since Winter and not expected to be opened until July.

So we stuck to the Highways and drove to Provo for sight-seeing.

The Wasatch Mountains with the receding snow cover are stunning this time of the year:

Along the way we stopped at Bridal Veil Falls:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0139_(2).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/68624656-2813-4f26-8742-8dbc7bddaf2c)

The highlight of the day was a visit to the Brigham Young University Museum of Art.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0204_(2).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/ccd3476d-02d0-4513-8875-b495749c4182)

Lyndi and I agreed that the Museum's permanent collection that was on display is the one of the finest we have seen. There are many beautiful art works by a wide variety of artists. Two of my favorites are:

"Lift Up Thine Eyes" by Norman Rockwell. Rockwell is most famous for his Saturday Evening Post cover illustrations. This painting is much more realistic:

Daniel Ridgeway Knight's "First Grief", painted in 1892 is a stunningly realistic painting:

Many of you know that Lyndi paints in the car while we are traveling. It is one of the things that she enjoys about our trips. I am pleased to present the first travel painting of 2021. Lyndi has wanted to do this painting for several years. Our cat "Poodle" passed away a while ago but we will always remember him sitting on the Dining Room radiator and surveying his domain, the back yard.

Day 9 - In Park City: We continued our "taking it easy" plan and stayed around the resort until Noon. We drove 16 miles west on I-80 to visit the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City.

The Hogle Zoo is a medium sized zoo that obviously has strong community support. We enjoyed the friendliness of the staff and the condition of the facilities.

Our first stop, and the main attraction for the day was the Hill Aerospace Museum. Located just north of Hill Air Force Base, right off I-15, the museum was easy to find. The museum is run by a dedicated non-profit organization. Admission is free and the facilities are superb.

There are two large hangers filled with exhibits and another large collection of planes and helicopters outside on the museum grounds. Every display is clearly described on info-plaques.

The Mission of the museum is to tell the history of the US Air Force using actual USAF equipment and the stories of the men and women who flew, built and maintained them and the wars they fought in.

I think that the WW II B-17 Stratofortress is a stunning example of the power of United States Military and the design and building of an air force second to none. During WW II more than 12,000 B-17's were built by the USA and Britain to destroy the German military and military industries.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0134_(3).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/a0f2395e-d289-497c-9029-bb2c3d30b2ac)

Every plane on display has a story to tell and many were personal to me, my family members and friends who served during war.

My favorite example of the accomplishments of US aircraft design and ingenuity is the SR-71 Blackbird. This high altitude, super-sonic, spy plane successfully conducted spy missions for many years before anyone in the public knew it was flying:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0174.JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/fc4eddff-489b-49b7-b413-85fb236353a8)

During WW II, my Father was a US Navy Bomb Disposal Officer. He told us of his memories of the bomb arming mechanisms for aircraft ordinance. When the bomb was released from the plane, a safety wire would pull a pin which allowed a small propeller on the nose of the bomb to spin. After a pre-determined number of revolutions, the bomb was armed to explode. For bombs that did not explode, my Father and his team would have to dis-arm the bomb. He said it was very important not spin the propeller while working on the bomb.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0186_(2).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/ae4e6361-059c-4099-934e-139f392dc3e4)

One of the important rolls of the US Air Force is movement of cargo world-wide and in dangerous locations. There are many planes that fulfill these missions. Lyndi is standing under a USAF C124 GlobeMaster II which operated from 1950 to 1974.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0217.JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/29426cdb-cdc3-4c17-b032-cbfa0b1cb1e3)

During the Cold War with the Soviet Union, the US Nuclear Triade was USAF ICBM missiles in silos in the US northern states, the submarine launched SLBM missiles (where I served) and long-range USAF strategic bombers like the B-52 and the more modern B1:

After our visit to the Hill Aerospace Museum, we drove east over the mountains to Huntsville, UT to have lunch at the Shooting Star Saloon:

The Shooting Star Saloon was founded in 1897 and is the oldest licensed saloon west of the Mississippi River. They are known for their burgers. We ordered the Star Burger: two cheese burger patties, lettuce, and tomato with a mild sausage served on a bun with chips. The burger was very good!

In the picture, there is a cozy on Lyndi's beer glass from Terry's Tag and Title Company, a woman-owned business in our County that is owned by a friend of Lyndi's. We estimate that the cozy has travelled over 120,000 miles with us on ZR-1 Road Trips.

Jim,

You?re pretty close to the Salt Flats. Any chance u?ll go there?

We have visited the Salt Flats on previous Road Trips but this time, we don't have it on the itinerary. I believe that the sand holds a lot of surface water this time of year.

Day 11: For our last day in Park City we decided to ride the Heber Valley Excursion Railroad. We boarded the train in Heber City, UT. The railroad is recovering from a COVID shutdown. Our trip was the first trip of the season. We booked our reservation in advance and choose a passenger car with tables and large windows for watching the country side:

The 2-hour trip went from Heber City to Deer Creek Reservoir and returned. Later in the season the trip will go past the reservoir and last 3 hours.

We left Heber City and drove to Midway, UT to find the Crater hot springs at the Homestead Resort.

The "Spring" is a cone that was formed by mineral rich heated water rising to the surface and depositing the minerals. A clever person cut a hole in the side of the cone and configured it to allow swimming and scuba diving:

Day 12: Our week at the Westgate Park City Resort and Spa was an excellent experience. The facilities are in very good condition, the staff are very helpful, professional and friendly. We enjoyed the visits we made to the their Beer and Burger Bar called Drafts. The Resort is primarily a timeshare operation but they also operate as resort hotel with daily and weekly rates.

On Saturday, we departed Park City and drove east to Flaming Gorge, UT. We took I-80 East back into southern Wyoming then turned south on UT-414. The roads were in good condition and the traffic was light. The scenery was beautiful.

For most of the terrain we drove through there is a easy to see red rock layer the has been shaped and exposed by the geological forces of sedimentation, uplift and erosion. This formation on I-80 east of Park City, shows the red layer:

We turned off I-80 near Lyman, UT and headed south on UT-414. We sighted this building with confusing signs. Is it John's or Ted's? We didn't stop to find out and maybe it doesn't matter:

This part of southern Wyoming has a lot of agricultural use, mostly in cattle and sheep production. Many farms use sprayed irrigation to improve grazing land:

We arrived at the western side of Flaming Gorge Reservoir and stopped for a photo shoot. The same red layer in the rocks is visible in the walls of this canyon:

As expected, we drove into the rain, and the temperature dropped into the 50's. We drove on the our lodging at the Red Canyon Lodge. In the parking lot we found two Corvettes and had a nice talk with the couples who were out for a weekend drive. The black Vette is a 2006 Z06 and the beautiful custom red Vette is a 1967. The owner of the '67 misread the weather when he started out and left the tops at home. His wife was not pleased about the situation:

Day 13: At Flaming Gorge, UT

This is our third visit to Flaming Gorge. The Red Canyon Lodge offers single cabins and dual cabins. We have stayed in one side of the dual cabins in the past, but sometimes the neighbors can spoil the solitude, so we chose a single this year:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0010(1).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/1fc419e3-6c82-4d7a-91bb-d0b229e49062)

Our cabin does not have a kitchen or cooking equipment that we are used to so breakfast was what some people call ham and eggs, but looks like lunch meat and a hard-boiled egg to me:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0001_(2).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/ac843f07-d727-4a2a-80a5-b666d818f7c6)

We spent the day exploring the scenery around the Green River Reservoir. In this southern section of the Canyon the red rock layer that we have seen in many places in UT and WY, is very striking:

Later in the afternoon, the family in a cabin near ours finally finished blowing up a raft to float in the resort lake. Unfortunately, they couldn't carry it to the water so they used their pickup truck:

After dinner, Lyndi and I took a 2-mile hike from our cabin to the rim view trail to catch the evening shadows on the water:

Day 14: On Monday, Memorial Day, we remembered those who served in our nation's Armed Services and fought for freedom against tyranny.

Just north of the Flaming Gorge Dam there is a constructed overlook. The views from there of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir are wonderful.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0248.JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/ada861b5-a071-4842-9800-386ce774e3bc)

The view from the overlook looking west shows only a small portion of the 90 mile length of the reservoir:

We decided to explore the Green River below the dam. We drove across the top of the dam and turned onto Spillway Boat Launch Road. From the spillway looking up the road appears to be suspended on the canyon wall:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0030_(2).JPG?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/96216657-955d-42e2-9820-83f6d27232c2)

The Green River is very beautiful. The Canyon walls rise high on each side of the river with forest atop on each side.

There is a narrow, well traveled path on one side of the river that we hiked for more than a mile:

The swiftly flowing river reflects the opposite side of the canyon:

There were many people on the river this morning. Boaters, fisherman, drifters, and hikers:

Our next destination was Moab, UT. The easiest route is south to Vernal, UT, then into western Colorado, to I-70, then west, then south to Moab. I decided to modify the route by getting off of I-70 at the exit to UT-128 to follow the Colorado River to Moab.

The Colorado begins in the Rocky Mountains and goes west across Colorado and into Utah. As the river runs southwest, it begins carving the landscape, creating canyons and buttes that rival the Grand Canyon.

Day 16: Rafting on the Colorado River

The weather here in Moab is HOT. By afternoon it is above 90 degrees. We decided to take a raft trip to cool off and enjoy the fabulous mountain views. We selected Adrift Adventures to ride with. Adrift Adventures is highly rated and we were confident we would have a good experience.

We got suited up at their headquarters in Moab and boarded a bus to take us up-river to the Tower Falls region of the Colorado River:

From the put-in area we drifted down stream to the take out point just north of Moab. Along the way we enjoyed the beautiful scenery:

Day 17: Still in Moab: We got a very early start for a guided Jeep trip down into the canyons at Canyonlands National Park. Once again we rode with Adrift Adventures of Moab:

We drove north of Moab on US-191 and turned south on CO-279 which follows the Colorado River. There is a large section of the cliff face with ancient petroglyphs:

Day 18: We are still in Moab, just taking it easy. We have had a failure of the HVAC system. The system would only blow hot air out the AC vents. This is not uncooled air like an AC system failure, we have heated hot air blowing from the AC vents. That means that the Blend Door is stuck in the heat position. I disassembled the passenger side dash and tried to get it working but it only worked for 1 day. This morning I took it all apart again and removed the Blend Air Damper Motor. I verified that the system would work without a signal from the motor and removed it. Then I rigged a wedge (made from a plastic knife) to stick the Blend Door in the cooling position. I hope this works because it was 100 degrees yesterday.

You are a better man than me, Jim, to have taken apart your dash not once, but twice, in 100 degree heat. Sounds like a good solution--hope it holds for you. You won't be needing heat for quite a few months. Sorry about your issue; good luck with it! --Bob

Day 19: South to Blanding, UT

We departed Moab early to get down the road before it got hot. Our next adventure is in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. The Needles District is the southern portion the National Park, which is a large park.

We took US-191 south. We stopped at Wilson Arch for a photo:

Before we got to the Needles District, we stopped to see an ancient artifact called Newspaper Rock. This area of the canyons was apparently a crossroads for travelers who carved designs into the dark desert varnish. The Petroglyphs are believed to be 1300 to 2000 years old. Some of pictures were carved by "recent travelers". There are no known explanations of what the figures mean, but maybe we can guess:

Well the plastic knife repair to get the AC working properly stopped working after one operating period. 89 degrees today. I decided that the problem was the HVAC computer has to see a position signal from the Blend Door Motor.

Hoping to get the whole system working properly, I took the motor apart and redistributed the grease to improve the operation.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/pp152/QB93Z/Blend_Door_Motor.jpg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/QB93Z/a/357b071d-d68b-419b-8d85-79c7dab83222/p/36c80ab8-6417-4873-805c-b341d3522dec)

Then, this evening when it cooled down I re-installed the motor. For the fourth time, I am declaring that the AC is working again.

Anyone want to give me odds on that?

I only have to remove the fuse panel trim and the passenger knee pad to get to the Blend Door Motor. On the later model cars, the Motor is on the bottom of the air duct box, much easier to get to.

Ok, just like the 89-older. Well that seems reasonable. I know this isn't your first rodeo with that motor. What is the actual cause of it going 'bad' or not working correctly? Is it gwear binding or the motor itself

Ok, just like the 89-older. Well that seems reasonable. I know this isn't your first rodeo with that motor. What is the actual cause of it going 'bad' or not working correctly? Is it gwear binding or the motor itself

Good question... This is the second ZR-1 Blend Door Motor that I have had problems with. My 1994 ZR-1 had AC problems that came down to a pinched vacuum line that operates the flappers that direct the air between the windshield (up), the AC outlets (in your face AC), or to the floor for heat. I started chasing this because the Blend Door Motor was rusted solid and not working at all. It was probably stuck in a mid position... always suppling mixed heated and cooled air.

My current problem with my 1995 ZR-1 started suddenly and was obviously a Blend Door Motor problem when the thermostat was set at 60 degrees it blew hot air out the AC vents at highest fan speed. My first troubling shooting attempt was to remove the blower fan rheostat so I could see the Blend Door. Note: this opening to see the Blend Door is in the top of the air box, under the fuel lines, next to the coolant fill cap. No matter what the thermostat required, the Blend door did not move. So I suspected a frozen BDM shaft, or a stuck BD Motor.

So I removed the dash panel and removed the BDM from the BD shaft. I tested the BDM by starting the car and watching the BDM. When the car is started, the HVAC computer drives the BDM to full heat and then to full cool. The computer uses the position sensor data to operate the door. In my case the BDM moved slowly and did not seem to go full travel, but is was operating. I reinstalled it and cycled it several times by running the thermostat up and down. It seemed to be moving the door, so I reassembled. The next day it did not work at all, always blowing full fan speed of heated air at the AC vents.

I completely removed the BDM again and decided to try to position the Blend Door to Cool and use a wedge to hold it in place. This worked that evening but did not work the next Morning. I cannot determine why that didn't work, but I needed to get the AC working as it was 100 degrees in MOAB, not do a research project.

I dis-assembled the BDM and tried to lubricate the moving parts and put it back in place. The AC worked properly for 5 cool-to-heat cycles on Saturday evening, but did not work the first time I turned it on Sunday Morning. We went for a hike and got back to the car and the AC ran properly, nice and cold.

SO... I am not sure what is going on.

I thought of that Phil. I stopped at a NAPA store in Moab and bought a $32 hose clamp but I couldn't find a position that reduced the hot air in to the cabin. The clamp was fairly large and it limited where I could put it without interfering with the hood.

I also considered trying to reach in and block the motion of the Blend Door, but I was concerned about my "wedge" would come loose and end up somewhere in the AC ducts.

When I was operating with the Blend Door shaft wedged and the BDM not plugged in, the green system light on the HVAC controller was flashing. I don't remember what that means, I assumed it signaled a missing position value.

Day 20: Early Sunday Morning we left Blanding and headed for Natural Bridges National Monument.

The primary difference between a National Monument and a National Park lies in the reason for preserving the land: National Parks are protected due to their scenic, inspirational, education, and recreational value. National monuments have objects of historical, cultural, and/or scientific interest, so their content is quite varied.

The NBNM is open 24 hours a day but the Visitor Center is closed due to COVID. At certain times, a Park Ranger is available for touring advice outside the Visitor Center.

We drove south on US-191 and turned West on UT-95, a Scenic Byway. While posing for our "photo at the sign" event, I discovered that the beautiful stone arch above the sign board is not stone. It is fiber glass.

Some of the land along UT-95 is used for Open Range cattle grazing:

The NBNM is a single, one-way road that circles all of the sights, look overs, and hiking trail heads. It is very easy to visit without concern that you missed something. The roads, turn outs parking areas and trails are all in excellent condition.

We hiked to the canyon bottom at Sipapu Natural Bridge. There were several birds species in the canyon. If you can identify these large birds, let me know. They were enjoying sun:

I was fascinated by this old, old tree trunk. It was long past its life time but the trunk was twisted in a manner that must have made it very strong:

Incredibly inspiring journey. I've thought of a long journey with mine, but wasn't totally comfortable with the idea yet. AC issues notwithstanding, you are inspiring me to plan a road trip.

I understand the need to be comfortable with the reliability of your ZR-1 in order to take a ZR-1 Road Trip. I would like to give you some things to think about.

Lyndi and I have driven more than 130,000 miles on road trips. We have had some problems on the road but have only had one failure that required towing the car for repair and losing a day of the itinerary.

When Lyndi and I prepared for our first big trip, the 2012 trip to Alaska, we made some decisions before we made the plan.

- Upgrade our AAA plan to ensure 200-mile towing. Verify CAA (Canada's AAA) honors your AAA plan. (We were covered)

- If we had a ZR-1 failure, we would tow it to a place that would manage car shipment home and we would rent a Jeep to complete the trip.

- Make a detailed, complete trip plan. Have hotel reservations for each day. On our first trip to the Grand Canyon, our Nikon camera became unreliable. We were able to buy a replacement on line and have the new camera shipped to a future hotel that we were comfortable would "receive" the package.

- Carry the tools and spare parts for the potential failure items that you are comfortable doing in a parking lot. I can send you a list of what I carry.

Travel with a ZR-1 group. A great event is the ZR-1 Mountain Run. We get together and spend a few days driving scenic routes. Also a group to The ZR-1 Gathering in Bowling Green, KY in May, or Corvettes At Carlisle in Pennsylvania in August.

Carry a Fuel Pump Jumper in your ZR-1 all the time. The jumper allows you to easily recover from a Fuel Pump Failure. The jumper can be installed in about 10 minutes. I invited the jumper and it saved me three times so far. Send me an email if you want a jumper. jim@gizmosart.com

I hope to see you on the Road.

Thanks, Jim.
Already have the fuel pump jumper. Plus a pair of brand new Delco fuel pumps installed.

I do love the idea of travelling with some ZR-1 guys. That sounds like a fantastic way to get the journey going.

The list would be great. Very much appreciate it.

The planning part I certainly do. I'm a huge lover of road trips. I was supposed to do New York to LA last spring but... covid. I did Route 66 a few years before. Great fun.

Were the 130,000 miles in the ZR-1? Amazing.

Thanks

Day 21: We left Blanding and headed Northwest to cross the Colorado River and drove to Torrey, UT and Capitol Reef National Park. We followed UT-95 again, past Natural Bridges and on to Hite where we crossed the Colorado River.

This route is my favorite scenic drive of all the trips Lyndi and I have done.

Jim,

I did a X-country trip last year in July from Chicago to San Francisco to see my new grandson (4500mi round trip). Because of your travelogues, I had images dancing in my head of doing it in the ZR, but decided to take my Volt instead. However, its beautiful but sparse scenery like this that makes me wonder about having a breakdown in a 30yr old car.
How do you guys keep from overly concerning yourselves about that? I know you do a great job of prepping for the trip.

The HVAC saga continues...... The HVAC system worked OK all the way from Blanding to Capitol Reef NP. Then we turned the car off to look a the Petroglyphs and the AC did not work at all when we started the car. We continued to the days lodging and the AC would not work. We adjusted our schedule to get underway very early (5 AM) to do most of our driving before the heat of the day. Today Tuesday, we left Torrey early and headed for the Rocky Mountains. Around 1PM, just for fun we turned the AC on and Lyndi notice a little cool air from here side vents. I took manual control of the Fan Speed and WE HAD AC again. It worked for the rest of the day. I think that the if the fan speed controller has a fault for High Speed, it will still work in Medium Speed. We will see how it works tomorrow.

In my experience of driving thousands of miles in ZR-1's and helping get other people's ZR-1's back on the road, I can predict that the tools and parts I carry will keep me on the road. I am confident in my ability to do the repair.

Here is a question about car trips. What would you do if a sloppy driver hit your car while changing lanes? You would have to deal with a OOC car and you would figure how to get your car moved to a safe location and then decide if you rent a car and continue or you fly home. I think that my odds of getting crashed into is equivalent to the chance that I have a "disabling" equipment failure.

Lyndi and I will deal with it.

HVAC Update.....As we crossed the Rockies the outside temperature was low so we did not need to use the AC. After Denver, the temperature rose and we turned on AC. -- We got cold air!!!!

When we got to Hays, KS to stop for the night, the temperature was 95 degrees out side and the AC was keeping it cool inside.

We were running with the thermostat set on 60 degrees (full Cool) and the Fan speed, running in manual, was set to 3.

Day 24: Thursday We got underway very early to beat the afternoon heat. On our way out of Hays, KS we watched the Sun putting on a show with the clouds:

As we headed east, the terrain became hillier:

There are some oil well near the Interstate that are still producing crude:

We stopped for the day in Wentzville, KS, a suburb of St Louis. We enjoyed a casual dinner with some of Corvette friends, swapping car stories.

Day 25: On Friday we left Wentzville, KS, crossed the Mississippi River and drove on to Columbus, OH.

Once again, we left very early and arrived at the Mississippi River in the pitch dark. Lyndi got some interesting motion exposures of the lights on the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge:

WARNING if you are travelling east on I-70, beware. East of Indianapolis, there is a 1.5 mile section of the eastbound lane closed to traffic. All of the cars and trucks have to drive down the shoulder. 1.5 miles took about 3 hours.

Welcome to Ohio:

Such great pics of the scenery in Utah and Colorado. I'm sure the photos don't completely do the incredible beauty of them justice - those are places one must experience in person to really appreciate.

Thanks to you and Lyndi for sharing all. Looks like your trip was another adventure for the books!

Thanks so much for posting this. I bought a 1990 ZR1 in Missouri and drove it 13 hours home to Atlanta and read a lot to try and prepare. A few of my thoughts, these were my experiences YMMV.

I wasn't a huge fan of doing hours in the car at highway speeds because of the noise. I tried twice to get earplugs at gas stations, no luck. Between wind noise, engine and exhaust it was just loud.
The seats were the best I've ever used for a road trip. After 13+ hours I had zero fatigue from them.
At 80mph in 6th gear I'm at about 2000 RPM, and so if I hit a hill, I'd need to downshift...such an interesting and useful gear ratio.
She is thirsty on the highway. :)
One interesting gas station comment: "Beautiful car. That new vette is interesting, but more European looking. This one is for us."

Goodman,

May I ask what exhaust? As for wind noise your windows might need adjustment. I have very minimal noise in my 1990. As for exhaust noise depending what system you have makes a difference

I was coming here to post the same questions as Jeff. I don't find the ZR-1 to be noisy at all. Yes, you are not cut off from everything mechanical as you are in a modern car, but it's hardly what I'd call noisy. In fact, I wish there was a little more sound from the exhaust.

The previous owner said it was stock, but I'm doubtful. I haven't had much of a chance to look just yet but I'll try this week. At 75/80 mph the wind, tire and exhaust note were just too loud to really even listen to the radio. It was better/worse depending on the road. I will say that the seats after 13 hours were just amazing...no discomfort at all during the trip, which is amazing.

The exhaust note at normal cruising speeds is glorious. It really sounds like a big block to me.

C4s and most Corvettes are a bit noisy with their fiberglass construction and large tires right behind your head. A loud exhaust (or one that drones) will aggravate that. If you could post a picture of your exhaust tips we could probably tell if your exhaust is stock or not. And if you have an aftermarket exhaust without catalytic converters it will be louder than stock. I was able to mellow out the sound of both my ZR-1s and my current Z06 by installing the sound deadener Dynamat behind the seats and in the hatch area. Only a slight improvement but noticeable to me. (some folks have removed the seats and installed it throughout the cabin). On my Z06 I got my Dynamat and asked the local Best Buy's audio installation department to install it and they did it for only $100 but they really should have charged more. --Bob

This isn't my car, but it's what the exhaust looks like:

Maybe we should open a new threat on that topic to not highjack this great threat here.
In Evans threat he says "Sold my Steel Blue 391 ZR-1...". I understood this as an indication of a modified engine, 391ci instead of 350. Am I wrong? If so this might be an indication for more engine growl.
My bone stock 91 is a great highway cruiser even way beyond 80 miles an hour (thanks God we're still allowed to). My 335 Michelin rear tires are barely noticeable, as are exhaust and engine at cruising speed. Of course all this changes when you floor the pedal, but not on steady cruise. She's not at all a silent car but far away from requiring earplugs on long runs.
Excessive tire noise might (but doesn't have to) be a sign of hardened or worn out bushings or worn tires with sawtooth profile.

We did not know that I-65 through Indianapolis was completely closed. We had to back-track on I-70 a little to get onto the beltway around the city on I-485 to get back on I-65 North.

First of all I'm SO excited to have signed on and seen that you two were back on the road. It's literally the reason I signed on to the forum just now was to see if that might be the case. Excited to read the chronicles this time around.

Secondly, I wish I'd signed on about two months sooner....... I would have seen your trip start and I'd have been able to TELL you that Indianapolis is F**KED. Indiana state flower is the orange road cone now. Living here has been difficult this year.
