View Full Version : Any fix for a worn 91 ashtray lid?

Hi,
hope you don't lough to hard about this naive rookie question... But is there any fix to a scratched 91 ashtray lid?! Mine is terribly worn inside and outside. No idea how the previous owner could scratch it all around that badly.
As per my research there is no replacement that looks and feels like the original. Only up to 89... Or is there a hidden ZR-1 owners source? ;)
Jokes apart - has anyone found a solution? Is there a correct paint or a restoration part? My Z looks fantastic on the inside (outside, too...) but this is a real flaw...
Any help is much appreciated!
Matt

Are you talking about the lid only? I guess you might not come across it new. I have the parts manual on my computer somewhere and not sure if available separately. Have you considered just getting the whole assembly?

If not, digging around here using search I thought someone mentioned spray paint codes that match.

Thanks for that hint. My idea was to just fix the lid as the rest is okay.
I remember I saw this item before on eBay but was concerned about their statement "If you are looking for a NCRS 100% correct Shifter Plate for your perfect Corvette, then you may want to keep your original."
Having asked him he just told me that colors are okay but there may be issues with the fit of the shift boot. But that sounds reasonable

Thanks, a term I never heard before... ;) But interesting to read. Has anyone the PDF file available that's linked under post #4? I get a 404 when clicking the link, so maybe it was remove or relocated at a time.

Black rubbery coating (a.k.a. Dulso), I believe, was used between 92 to 95. 91 was medium silver paint. Either Ecklers or Mid America use to sell rattle can that matched 90 and 91 bezel paint.

Got it and understood. I?m not one of those NCRS guys, but that probably means you can?t spray paint it either. Hopefully you?ll come across a good used one that matches yours.

Ordered one of these for a customer of ours.
Saying it won't get through NCRS is an understatement.
It's fit was terrible.
It's finish was paint, not rubberized, and that was way off from original.
I declined to install it.
It WAS that bad!
Same customer wanted the replacement clear plastic that goes on the deck lid of the convertible beneath the back of the top beneath the weather-strip.
Two for two.
Wouldn't install that junk either. A sandwich bag is thicker.
It's a shame.
I would think if one made a quality item, folks would pay up, but no one bothers. They just keep churning out junk.
Fortunately it has nothing to do with the LT-5, just the run of the mill Corvette parts.
When I was younger I thought Delco to be next to garbage.
Not so anymore.
While it may not be as good as NOS, it is certainly better than the junk sold all over the place.
If anyone finds a good piece, let me know.
It's worse on the older cars. If you need the vent window mechanism for say a 67 coupe, you buy a new re-production piece.
You open up the door, remove and replace, and the FIRST time you crank it closed, the gears inside the mechanism break along with the housing.
Disgusting and frustrating.

I am going to be offering to refurbish members radio bezels and shift plates ( including the lettering on the ZR-1 bezel). I am still in the final phase of testing and have done a couple of members here that seem to be satisfied. The coating I am putting on the late bezels and plates isn't dulso but it has the correct feel to it. Haven;t had one go through NCRS yet. Fairly certain my 90 and 91 's would fly though.

Thanks guys, great comments. I'm not actually looking for NCRS correct things (nothing like NCRS over here...) BUT it's a truly beautiful 91 ZR mit only 18.5 miles. So I want things accordingly nice. Crap (Marc, thank you VERY much for preventing me from making a mistake) will not make bad parts any better...
I just pulled CDM and control head and therefore also the center console. As nice as she is - it's a petting zoo that preserves 30 years of stain with no cleaning nowhere. And I have absolutely no idea what the previous owner did to that ashtray cover, but it's scratched all around, inside, outside, corners, everywhere. Whereas the rest of the console is fine!
So if I (or someone else) can repaint the cover with a correct paint (it's not that rubberized stuff but solid matte silver gray-ish paint) it's should be fine. I'll check Eckler/Mid America for paint.

Very cool. I?ll watch for it. I spent big on a NOS radio bezel a few years back and it is getting sticky, to my dismay. Never had that problem on other 94-96es I owned. Thank you!

Look for a used replacement. Call Mirrock Corvette. They support our forum. Mark will know if the manual or automatic consoles have the same lid. Then you know it will match.

Good point, thank! I'll give him a shout!
Also I realized ZIP has a replacement, too. Any experience with that one? https://www.zip-corvette.com/90-91-manual-shifter-upper-trim-plate.html

***NEVER**** use ANY interior / cleaner protector on bezel, shifter or dash/door trim (like window switches, air vents) a very mild water and non spot car wash soap is your only option), then lightly pat dry with micro fiber/ or better yet no lint towel.

90 or 91, auto or manual, all have the same ash tray door/lids.

Any experience with that one? https://www.zip-corvette.com/90-91-manual-shifter-upper-trim-plate.htmlunfortunately the entire run of these shifter plates for a manual car was produced with an error where the shift boot fits, and the factory boot won't fit, it has to be rigged and there is no good way to rig it. Look at bottom of small print and it tells you this, this is the same part that all of the places sell, so it is just not this vendor.

I would like to see this when done. I had a hell of a time getting the painting correct on top of my carbon fiber.

Used this paint from Mid America Motorworks on my1991 ash tray lid...It was a perfect match. It no longer shows up on their website, but you might give them a call and see if they can still provide some.
