Hi guys!
I had an old TomTom GPS set and it finally died a few days ago. Now I am looking for a brand new with money being no problem. Well, that is not exactly true but what I am trying to say is that I want a really good GPS and I am not going to be a scrooge about it. What do you recommend? Do I go again for the TomTom or is there something better now? I have absolutely no idea about the market of GPSs but I know that lately my old Tom had issues with pinpointing the locations, like having old maps and being unable to download current versions. I don't want that. I need everything to be up to date.

My old TOM TOM was a POS - Garmin unit was much better, but no - the GPS on my cell phone has put me out of the market for a hand held in the past 5-6 years now.
But, I'd be interested too, to see what improvements there are for stand-alone (i.e., portable) systems.

Although I have Pioneer AVIC 1400BT in dash unit, I run Garmin permanently wired and positioned left, top of the windshield.
Two reasons for running Garmin are;
1. I am not forced to pay exorbitant fee for map update for Pioneer unit. Garmin map update, I think, was $35 each time.
2. There are sites where I can download stationary radar locations and red light camera locations for minimal fee and I can upload downloaded info as "waypoints" onto Garmin unit. Once uploaded, Garmin unit will chime and alert me as I approach stationary speed traps and red light cameras.

Well I think Paul said it - with GPS on phones now, I don?t think I would ever get another freestanding GPS unit. Why would anyone?
Same goes for point-and-shoot digital cameras, as opposed to high end SLRs and the like. My iPhone does a better job capturing ?in the moment? pics than any point-and-shoot I ever had.

Why not simply mount an iPhone (or Android, pick your poison) instead?

I hate coiled wire.
Really, the best approach now would be Pioneer AVIC 8500 or 8600NEX. These units allow for mirroring the iphones.
I ran iphone/waze app and had it displayed on the infotainment screen on my son's 2019 GS when I drove down and back to Jacksonville, FL. Worked like a charm.

I run Waze app on my phone, it is free and updates in real time locations of police, speed cameras, potholes, debris on the road, etc. Get a good phone holder and your good to go.

Problem is, with eye glasses on, can?t read iPhone screen anymore.

Where did you get that "cup Holder"?
or "phone Holder" (looks like a cup holder holding a detachable phone holder)?
I downloaded "Waze" :thumbsup::thumbsup:

secondchance has both correct. For later C4 years Ecklers has the double cup holders but for those who have the 90-93 you can only use the single cup holder. Works great.

Double cup will work for 94 - 96 C4's. Several places sell them.

My eyes are not so good anymore so I use an Ipad with WAZE or Goggle maps. I find WAZE uses the battery up much quicker. I mount the Ipad to the holder below which mounts under the first seat rail bolt, in my commuter car. I haven't tried it the Vette but it should work fine as long there is no passenger.
Not all the long ago I would use a paper map and write my turns on the windshield, for long trips.

To your original question, I did buy a Garmin Nuvi for my daughter, it has a dashcam built in and will reroute around traffic, actually better than WAZE. I did side by side tests recently on 2000 mile trip.

I run my iPhone which is connected to my Pioneer AppRadio4.
Works great especially since I also get turn notifications on my Apple Watch.
MAPS is now providing ?red light and speed camera? warnings now w latest update.
