View Full Version : How much room do I have to shim the drivers motor mount for headers

How much room do I have to shim the drivers side motor mount for the OBX headers to clear the steering shaft? I am also coating and wrapping them in titanium wrap so I will likely have to dimple them too. What shim size (max thickness) can I use without engine touching hood? I know it is close already. Thanks.

Of 5 ZR-1s worked on by Wazoo, none needed shimming. 4 were Stainless works and mine was OBX. Apart from shorter length to accommodate fake cats, OBX runners are almost exact duplicate of Stainless Works.

Thanks, I have read posts saying both yes and no, most requiring a dimple at least. I know mine are going to be thicker due to the coating and wrap.

check the health of the motor mounts... I hear they can deteriorate, this would drop the motor down some... worth a check if you are in there

Mine only required dimpling #1 tube by the steering shaft. I used the Maximizer headers that are the same as OBX without the polished finish.
Good Luck

Keep in mind it's possable to push the engine over to the right a few mm if necessary before tightening the mounts down.

Thanks, would this hurt the driveline tolerence, I currently have the C-Beam off waiting on C-Beam plates from Bill B.

If you have kids, there may be some silly putty or clay about. But a ball on the plenum & close the hood. Check the clay/putty & measure the thickness to determine hood clearance.

That's a really good idea, what do you think the highest spot would be..seems like the front of the throttle body and ECM. No kids, but I have some modeling clay!

Should be ok

Just another data point, a few months ago I noticed my low mile mostly stock car (no headers) probably came from the factory this way. Pic shows engine mount full right of the slot.

I went to do my motor mounts today, the were like your already as far right as possible. I had planned to reuse the OE heat shields but they looked rough so I am waiting for heat shield material to make my own shields. Should be here Friday, the passenger side seemed not to have any shim at all, I did not remove drivers side yet.

From my experiance the OBX headers are not an exact copy from the Stainless Works. They don`t fit bolt on. You have to match the pipe from the first cylinder. If not you will touch the steering column shaft. 1/2 inch distance is required as minimal heat protection. So you have to buckling the pipe nearly 50% with a high performance loss.

The OBX are much cheaper then the Stainless Works...but I think: made in China (they forgot the car around the engine/headers).

This is not always the case. I think our ZR-1s as well as C4 Corvettes have unusual variations between car to car.
My 94 had plenty of clearance when I installed OBX.

Yes, cloud be possible, can you post a pic from the clearance? When I installed the OBX (3 times on different ZR-1) there was only 1/4 clearance between the header pipe cyl. 1 and the steering shaft...not enough in my opinion.

That is a ridiculous amount of "dimpling"... I installed Stainless Works on my 92 and Watsons on my 90.... no "dimpling" whatsoever... and the Watsons were purchased used...

BTW I just know OBX and Stainless Works for LT5 headers. Are there other manufacturers...?

Here you go. I would say less than 1/8" clearance.
94 has a ASR module in the way. So, this is the only angle I can take a shot.

Thatˋs what I mean...a barbq for the aluminium material of the steering shaft....In my eyes technical nonsens and dangerous for the driving security: absolutely a no go for the German T?V (the 2-yearly technical check requiriert by law).

Maybe at low engine rpm no heat problem...but 2 houres at highspeed on a German Autobahn...? Can end deadly.

Your dimpling was not due to rubbing but concern over heat from headers?
It doesn?t get as hot as you might think. Notice how factory decal made out of thin vinyl is staying intact?

Headers came in, this is a photo of me holding the drivers side header flush to engine 1/4 in or more of clearance, waaay more than enough, pleasantly surprised.
