View Full Version : What's the Mileage on your ZR-1(s)?
93RubyZ

As part of my research: http://www.zr1netregistry.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3159, I'm looking for reliability data on as many ZR-1's as I can get.
I would like to know the mileage on your ZR-1(s) as well as the year. Please list both pieces of information for each ZR-1 you own. If you prefer not to post here, you can also send it to me via PM. Whatever information I get here will become my data sample size, so the more responses I get the better. I will not associate the data provided to specific cars.
Also, for the reliability aspect, if you have had any major failures of either the LT-5 engine or transmission, I would like to know that as well. By major failure, I mean a failure that has caused either a complete rebuild or replacement. If anyone has had any of these failures, I will probably have more specific questions for them.
I will be asking this question here and at the Net Registry, so for those that post at both places, please only reply at one location so I don't double count. Thanks!

Cool I'll go second!
90, #2233, black over grey, 21,561
No motor or other drive train failures......but plenty o gremlins to keep me chasing down stuff....unless injectors count? Other than that mostly all the stuff in the "common issues" section @ the Net Reg site.
Tom
just an update on 90/2233, up to 46,000 + miles and still no major failures. It just needs to have some of it's inherent slowness removed....I think if I drove it less, it would seem quicker! LOL
another update: 51,514 3/23/2012 still nothing major to report.

We have 2 here: '90 Black w/ Red at 30,000 miles, this one is the show and keep car. Also a '91 Red on Red w/ 90,000 miles and we drive it everywhere distance is a factor.
Have to say the 90k car runs as good, considering mileage, as the 30K car and it may be at BG for sale for $ 17,500!!

About 65,000 on the meter, but the engine was replaced by GM at about 25,000 miles when owned by a previous owner. Supposedly some sort of oil problem- they often just replaced instead of repaired the LT5. DUNN Baby!

I have 138,893 miles. SGC 368 done at around 134,000 while the engine was still running good. I have relaced both fuel pumps, injectors, vacuum pump, water pump, had radio repaired by Dr Don, replaced air conditioner compressor with later model and 134a. Had car repainted due to damage from shipping to SGC. Replaced started due to water getting in valley from water pump problem (one leaf covered the drain hole). I have no record as to problems before 132,000 miles as that is what the car had on it when I purchased it. I can tell you that it appears that the engine had never been apart.

my 90 has 18,000 miles on it. when i bought it last July the service engine light was on. turned out to be a bad Derm module. CDN part no: 10094618...discontinued. sent the airbag computer to Airbag Systems in Allen, Texas. had it back & in the car in less than a week. no other previous issues that i know about.
my 95 has 9900 miles on it. it had the windshield replaced under GM warranty in 11/30/2000 with 9112 miles on it. i find this interesting. in service date was 12/05/1994:icon_scra .
my 93 has 13,825 miles. haven't received the car yet but all the records i dug up indicate no problems under warranty or otherwise...yet:o.

My Red/Saddle 1990 #120 has 41,000 miles. It has numerous mods. Issues to date: Injectors were fine until I had them cleaned and tested...now they leak, Replaced the DIS module, replaced the ECM, replaced an intermittent wire to the crank sensor, new clutch, new front and rear wheel bearings, new steering rack, new Ron Davis radiator (old one blew because of the incorrect thermostat)....that's about it. Runs good!

Here goes:
1992
28,000 miles
I've owned it since last June, and recently had the clear (bronze) top refurbished, as it had a star crack on the passenger side. I had a new body control module installed last year, as the old one had failed and none of the backlit dash lights worked (this part was nearly impossible to locate!). I had the rear speakers rebuilt last fall.
The previously owner provided me with documentation of major repairs, include a transmission replaced (20,900 miles); rear end, PCV valve, power steering pump, and clutch master cylinder replaced (19,500 miles); three injectors and stereo head unit replaced (17,500 miles) -- all replaced under warranty.
She's running great now (knock on wood!)

1990 white/red #2299. Currently has 139,376 miles. Purchased with broken driver's side secondary timing chain and engine partially disassembled.
From what I have discovered so far, I believe this was most likely caused by driving it with an ECM that was causing bad misfiring, though I don't have direct proof of that. The ECM was previously replaced back in 2001 (most likely for the same reason). Carfax shows that the last smog test failed, probably because of the bad ECM.
Damage turned out to be minimal considering the type of failure. Just a couple of bent valves and some scoring on the oil pump, no damage to the block or either of the heads. As of today, it still isn't running, I am in the process of repairing/restoring this ZR-1.

Idea for DYNO
Since the NO1 failure is the Injectors maybe a special post on Injectors is in order.
Start with the poll - HAVE YOUR INJECTORS FAILED YET?
Box 1 - NO
Box 2 - Yes at under 10,000 miles
Box 3 - Yes at 10K to 25K miles
Box 4 - Yes at 25k to 50K miles
Box 5 - Yes at 50K to 75K
you get the idea and in the text post the owner could tell us what year ZR-1 and which brand of injectors they replaced with and any other notes on their project.
I am interested as to when the various MY's fail due to the 10% Ethanol on average.
We know the MY 93 and up are supposed to be OK with Ethanol ---Right??

Just an update from January 2011.
After I posted that I drove it like I stole it.
Went Wichita to Salt Lake City in late March, then went SLC to NorCal for a cruise up the coast with the NorCalVettes crew. Then NorCal back to SLC. SLC to Vegas. Vegas to LA, tooled around LA in it during the month of May. LA back to Wichita in late May. June it went to Marengo, IA and from there we attended Bloomington Gold. Then in early October we went to the Eureka Springs Corvette weekend. The mileage is up to 53,000.
After Eureka Springs I had to do a plenum pull and search for a vacuum leak. She's back together and running strong, just normal maintenance...and she's getting a new air dam in a week or so, imagine that.

Yes I am happy with the deal, it's that "jewel" of a Corvette I've been looking for. Ordered new tires for it and a glass roof this past week. (Need the extra head room) Drove it all day yesterday, and I will have it in Bowling Green this year. See you soon.

1990 #2742, red/red, 58,600 miles. I purchased the car in October of 2011 with 57,700 miles. The car had been owned by a dedicated enthusiast who had had top flighted the car several times and had also received the McLellan award with it a few years ago. I listened to the advice of people on this board and bought a well maintained car with documentation. Prior to my ownership, the following major items had been replaced or repaired:
1. Injectors
2. Plug wires
3. Radiator replaced with a Dewitt unit. Original came with car.
4. Clutch
5. A/C control unit
6. Alternator
7. Haibeck chip
8. Starter
9. Stereo had been refurbished
9. Starter solenoid
I have replaced the clutch slave cylinder since I bought it but everything else worked and it still does. I have owned 13 Corvettes prior to this and this has been my favorite.
Thanks to everyone on this board for sharing all of your knowledge.

Currently pushing 80K. Have replaced/rebuilt everything except the basic engine and tranny. Just returned from a 500 mile trip in her and all worked as advertized! Only exception is the driver's lumbar bladder does not hold air. MPG was 21.36 on Shell 91 with a/c running all the way. Trip went from 2200 ft alt to 5500 ft alt and back.

1991 Steel Blue/Steel Blue #1029 has 8,400 miles. Bought in 8/2011 with 3,400 miles. Now runs and looks better than new!
But after 20 years sitting, when first bought had to replace: Injectors, oil cooler line, tighten various parts related to minor leaks - As per Haibeck article; replace both fuel pumps, replace secondary actuator solenoid; replace headlight bushings; change all fluids to synthetic; changeover AC; Every time I drove my Z for the first 6 or so months, she felt better, and now feels brand new with zero squeaks rattles or issues!

My 95 now has 24,000 miles on it; I have driven it about 3,000 miles since purchasing it last summer, including a trip to Bowling Green last May. When I first got it I had Marc Haibeck go through it and service everything and replace a few things like weather stripping. Other mods he did are noted below. The Haibeck 510 packages included removal of the secondaries and the AIR pump and related hardware. Runs perfectly. --Bob

My wife's 1991 #1840 now has 80k miles.
Appears to be stock injectors, I've only used Sunoco or Mobil 93 since we bought it at 75k.
Only real issues have had to do with prior owner. Trans has shift fork and syncro issues, bought it this way. Emissions problem with gutted cats, elec problems from DVD stereo, that sort of stuff.
About due for hoses, clutch, lower control arm bushings. The bushings are because of the slicks I'm sure. Couple of trim bits, weatherstrip, no big deal.
Cheers,
- Jeff

1995 ZR-1, Lingenfelter 390 LSV, only issues are I had the secondary switch selenoid fail and decided to pull the secondaries out, and had a new clutch roast at BG.
car pulls like a freight train, consistently dynos at 508 at the tires or higher.
LPE build it back in 97 with 13k miles, so I have 67k worth of grins on the stroker. the LT5 is one tough hombre, and the LPE builds only enhance that.
probably the most durable and trouble free high performance car I've ever had, and I have a few.
I take it to redline often at 7400 (limiter at 7500) and the car responds consistently when driven hard and often.
been commuting to work in it this summer during decent weather with the top off and the targa truss in place. even with the high price of gas, it's SOOOOO worth it.
life is too short to drive junk, and I value time in the Z immensely
I fully intend to "wear this one out" and chances are good it will outlast me!!

New injectors, wires, coil packs when I purchased it last year at 62,000 miles. Since that time, minor issues, back up light switch, headlight bushings, one FX gear, air pump for seat and amps. Lucky to live in Wazoo land with talent willing to help anytime.

AC just charged with R-34 and that works great too. New Michelins installed and are great handling and riding. 91 #1820 Arctic White/ Gray 61,000 miles.
Replaced starter solenoid contacts. ( Dreaded No Start issue)
Still had original Injectors, checked and found a few marginal, possibly starting to fail. Replaced Injectors with SS inj from Jerry's.
Had the top end ported by LGaff while it was apart. Port matched the heads to the IH's, Secondary delete and chipped.
Previous Owner had installed Headers, a full 3 inch exhaust and replaced the clutch and flywheel ( For performance reasons, I believe, not due to failure)
Bose Stereo needs to be overhauled, radio works but CD and Tape deck do not.
The car has been well looked after, it has some rock chips that comes with the mileage, and will need a paint job at some point. Interior is excellent, seat bladders all work, some minor scuffing on the Drivers bolster is the only sign of wear.
The original windshield has a small 1 inch crack from a rock chip. Repaired and holding so far..
Awesome Car..
Great info and support from You Guy's on the Forum.

Considering the cost of these cars new I can understand the tons of dealer paperwork too. Mine was owned by a medical doctor (surgeon) and it look like he took the car in for everything and anything especially squeaks and wind noise.
You bought this car the right way in my opinion as it probably had all of the known issues cared for plus you received the mods too. Good for you. Now you get to enjoy the benefits. :)

thanks. first owner owned a large landscaping business and bought it as a company car I was told. second owner is a dentist and did all the mods and cared for it. so far I have been lucky with it. I understand all vacuum issues have been resolved new hoses..etc.. injectors new etc.. all the problems I see that people have with these cars have already been dealt with so the car is ready to go. I do need to repair the radio. I never knew that these radios were such pieces of crap. he replaced all the bose speakers and when he put a cd in it, the radio broke. oh well I guess this will be on me. My car has a zimmer chip. Hib Halverson did a comparison on these chips a while ago and said the zimmer chip was one of the most aggressive ones. car runs very strong.

You have a nice ride there. I wish I had the money for just some of the mods on your car. My radio CD player crapped out too. I sent it to Dr. Don in Texas and it came back better than new and the CD unit was replaced with a better unit. As Dr. Don said " the old CD unit was a heat sandwich which helped its demise". I took it apart before I sent it and believe all of those Bose CD units will fail based on heat and use. He cleaned the radio head and replaced the lamps etc. Works great now.

did you take your stereo out yourself? and what about that cdm unit? I hear it is a pain to take out. I have a friend who a retired corvette mechanic at a chevy dealership who would do it but he is getting up in years and that cdm looks like a real pain to take out. I was contemplating going with a all new aftermarket system but since the previous owner already bought and installed new bose speakers I might as well rebuild what I already have. Its not like I even turn on the radio when I am driving any corvette since I like to hear the motor at all times. I think I have turned on my radio in my c5 3 times in 7 years. I still feel that I should fix it because I dont like knowing that something in the car does not work correctly regardless if I use it or not. How much did Dr. Don charge you for your radio rebuild? did that include the cdm unit?
Franke
12-31-2013, 09:15 AM
I pulled the head unit out from the dash as usually that is all that is not working. I didn't touch the CDM unit. I replaced the capacitors in the amps in the speakers and they work fine now. Electrolytic caps just dry out over time and lose the ability to " Capacitate" take a charge and hold it:) Dr. Don charged 200.00 for parts + 100.00 for labor+ 15.00 shipping. Total was 345.00. That was back in 2008. Probably a little higher now but he was able to replace that CD unit for a better design without making any changes to the looks of the radio. He can probably add a Ipod /aux jack too now. I'm like you in that if I know something is not working it will be fixed regardless of use.

thats not too bad. I read somewhere that some of the other rebuilders also require that the cdm goes with the radio for rebuild. There is another rebuilder of radios that members use but he requires both units. If I can take out just the head unit it would be great. Maybe I will just do that and leave the cdm alone. I figure if the head unit comes back and does not work then I will remove the cdm and send it in. My head unit had a take stuck in it. when the take was inside the antenna went up but of course no sound. After playing with it a couple of days, the tape came out one day but now it says (tape in) and i get no sound the the antenna does not come up. It needs a total rebuild.
the previous owner said it was all working fine with his newly installed speakers until he slid the cd inside then it locked up. I have head a lot about Dr. Don so I will try him. Thanks.
