So I am swapping to all white letter/black gauges. I am tired of the grey and yellow colors. I have all the pieces to swap. My problem is being a 1990, I have the Full Engine Power on the DIC, the DIC is grey. I am looking to do a LCD solution but I don’t have a good mount for it yet.

Anyone have a solution for the light or do I just leave it out?

Luv my White on Black gage cluster in my 90’, it’s out of a 96 LT4. But, sorry, can’t help you with the DIC. Interested to see your solution tho...

I say leave it out. You don’t need a light on your DIC! [emoji38] Sorry, I’m of no help Jeff! 🤙🏼

GM screwed up. Light should be on for reduced power and no light for full power or at least a small light at key, not some huge DIC amber glowing annoyance. My only complaint :-)

You have a link to the screen you used? can you add what you want? Are they predetermined areas/icons and or size or is it open to what you want? I guess it takes the signal from the existing DIC wiring or can you pic it up from the ECM as in adding a light or caption when the secondary's open.

Thanks

Parts I am using:

Donor DIC from a 1990 as i solders to the spots where the Lights would be

Arduino I am using is this one:

https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11113

I am using 8 DIO lines.. Not sure the active ABS is used though

I have 2 extra IO which would be good for Secondary detection..

Screen:

I am using an older version screen though

Very impressed. Thanks for the information. Looking at your radio/nav setup I guess you have done away with the power Key (Not needed if you have your prom default to on at startup)?
Did you just use the plastic printed CB from the back of the DIC as solder points?
I'm currently looking for a standard center dash for modding to see how big an LCD screen will fit and will leave out the power key as I don't need it. You just added another dimension to this.

No Power key is still there however my center bezel is custom.. I have a 95 console side on the driver side and 90-93 on the passenger side.

My interface board is big and might fit in behind the screen with a bunch of hacking. I need to trim the LCD Bezel to fit right on the DIC.

Yes I am currently using the Plastic PCB for solder joints. I also tap off the connector for the dimmer. But the LCD just has a high/low in my code. I have a new version of code to try, what I have will not always work and sometimes works inverted.. I have a bunch of changes I made last night

Here is an updated video.. Code has been updated although the initial key on is slower. I am working to get the SES as the priority on key on.

You can see the power key in this video.. working out a spot for the interface PCB

I like it. What else are you going to add to the DIC?

-=Jeff=-
11-08-2019, 09:07 AM
Not really sure yet.. The problem is the Arduino runs serially so the more I add the 'slower' the response, especially since the screen is a serial communication.

Since I have a C60 car, I thought of adding temperature sensors for inside and outside. but I do like the idea of a display for the secondaries. but need to add wiring out to the motor for that, this way I could actually know that they are opening..

Right now the bigger challenge is finding the right Font for any text and then getting that to work on the screen.

-=Jeff=-

I think I found a different setup. a new screen and arduino that will work much better, assuming I can have multiple images at a time. also be faster

Plus the screen will fit better in the spot I have for it

So I ordered a 5” screen and a shield for an arduino. The new stuff should be much faster plus I can stack it better.

This first pass was a good experiment but I want a screen to fill the space.

Not really sure yet.. The problem is the Arduino runs serially so the more I add the 'slower' the response, especially since the screen is a serial communication.

You might consider using an ESP8266-based device. NodeMCU is one of a million variants that is very popular, but I'd look around to see if there weren't others that might fit. I believe you can use Arduino code unchanged - just recompile.

Not sure how many A/D inputs you're using - if it's more than one, you'd need to add more (I believe most Arduino shields work).

Very neat project!

5” screen will almost fit.. need to trim the bezel and mod it to work.. here is a demo of the display. I was manually testing response time and it is good, however I have a challenge with the screen booting on power up (due to a library) I bought another 4.3” screen which would be easier to fit and should be faster

Waiting on the 4.3" screen it will fit better. I am thinking of adding a a few other features. One being Tire pressure sensors if I can get a receiver and sensors and them make them work.. Lastly for me would be Ext and Int Temperatures, since I don't have C68..

Once I get the screen I will get the images to work, then look into the rest

Got my new screen. I have it working in a demo state, I need to connect it to the car to test it. The 4.3 screen will fit better. I need to try text to see what else I can add

Screen shot. I don’t have Air Bag, TPMS or ASR displayed (no really using those). I did add a few extras for future hopeful addons... Tire Monitor and Temperature (I have a C60 car)

Thanks Steve.. here is the list of Components now:

Parts I am using:
Donor DIC. I cut the flexible circuit board as it got on the way. I soldered wires to the DIC Connecter

Arduino Due

Ended up soldering wires to the IO lines I am using. Currently 6 IO lines, my current screen does not support dimming, if I get one that is dimmable, then I will use one more IO

Jeff,

Can’t we find somebody who can 3D Print the radio bezel? The one issue is finding the stencils for the lettering.

-=Jeff=-

I am sure we could..

32valvesftw
12-13-2019, 06:57 AM
It looks like it would need to be injection molded, maybe thermal molding would work. BUT it would be "crazy expensive" per my better half who runs a plastics shop, due to costs of the mold and production issues. Hand laid carbon fiber would probably be cheaper. I don't think 3D printing would yield a lasting product.

-=Jeff=-

The C5 guys have a custom bezel to allow for a Double DIN radio.. last I recell that piece was $250-300..

The piece I am working is actually using 3 bezels, Acetone and ABS pellets.

The radio surround has been changed, the drivers side has been widened to allow for the 1994 console side, and now the DIC has been made to fit the LCD. the right side I added should be about 1/8" closer to the center, bit I think it will be fine

I think it is now ready for paint. Unless I can find a place that hydro dips..

Not going down that path. The bezel is time consuming.
I still need to figure out the best way to mount it and now I am looking at a 5" screen instead of the 4.3"
