I know it avail at many parts outlets.. but have heard it needs to be modified for our application

I see one on Jerry's website, which looks OEM.. However, He lists only 1991-995.. what about 1990?

is it a different sensor?

No PM from you Hans,

Right the replacement, according to Marc, needs to be adjusted to fit..

I was curious on the specific part Jerry has

Here is info I received from Marc:
I use the Standard Motor Products sensor. Number PC7. It has a metal bracket that must be removed and cut down to about the size of a dime to allow the sensor to seat. The sensor is about .030" smaller in diameter. I use a larger o-ring to be sure that the sensor does not
leak oil. Then I wrap the sensor with aluminum tape to increase the diameter by .030".

Just a typo Jeff. In the body of the full description, it correctly states 90~95. Thanks for calling it to my attention.

Replaced it today.. 5 min job. My sensor had a metal spacer and I also found oil had leaked in the electrical side due to cracks in the sensor

I have attached a couple of pictures

The VIN for your 1990 must be under 0500. I hope you left the shim in place. It has to do with DIS Module which is also unique to the first 500 of the 1990 model. After that, the DIS Module was modified & the shim was no longer needed.

Bringing this back up. My VIN is 906 but my crankshaft position sensor also had a shim. What gives?

So my car, 1990 VIN 0906 has both the shim and the 1103737 DIS. Both original.

Great questions Wondered why my car also had the shim as it is #1051, I would need top look at part number of DIS next time it is apart

How thick is your shim? Was it loose & came out with the sensor?

What do you consider think? it was not thin to to point I could easily bend it if I wanted to, but was there. I don't recall if it stayed in place when I removed my sensor

My shim was loose and was less than .050. Probably in the .030 range just guessing.

OK, here is why I asked.

Photo of shims we have in stock, various thickness, 0.065", 0.081" & 0.097".

Photo of the Steel Insert in the block for the Sensor.

Notice, it looks very much like the Shim in the photo above. I initially made the mistake of seeing the "steel insert" and mistaking it for the "shim." That is why I was asking if your "shim" actually came out with the sensor when it was removed.

Could one possible explanation for sensor shims "seen" on 1990 models with VIN higher than 500, is that you may have seen this & thought it was a shim.

Nope. Definite shim. Came off with the sensor. Photo of the DIS part number attached.

Well, its only one datum point, but your finding does indicate that the shims were used past the first 500. The question that comes to mind is "Does the first 500 refer to the vehicle VIN or the Mercury SN?" I don't imagine there was any effort made to install new engines from Mercury in a particular order relative to VIN. So if true, the possibility may exist that the first 500 engines are scattered among 1990 VINs.

Also, there appears to be a typo on your webpage under the DIS sections. It lists "PN 1103747" for the early DIS. Believe that should be the 1103737 PN.
