Rear Hatchback Weatherstrip

My weatherstrip is barely hanging on so I decided to replace it. I got the replacement from Corvette Central. I took the old weatherstrip off and compared it with the replacement. I noticed some differences between the two which begs the question: Was the original glued in because that’s what it looks like? Any one know?

I just changed my rear hatchback weatherstripping last weekend. Noticed the same thing, but thought it might have been done by the previous owner to compensate for it falling apart. Definitely a good upgrade

I don't recall if mine was glued in or not. I did not glue in the new weatherstripping and it's been doing fine for 7 years.

I’ve replaced 2, one on my 89 and one on my 90Z.
Neither were glued at all.

Not glued in but does have some type of messy goop that gets everywhere.

Now that you mention it, there was some kind of goop on it, but
definitely not glue

On my 92, it was really sticky like glue. My 93 weatherstrip just came right off like it was just stickum on the seal.

The factory "adhesive" was a beige colored semi-adhesive (my words) which provides some water sealing ability,, but allowed the seal to "float" so that the rubber would not separate at the corner(??).

IMO, there are better ways to secure the rubber including the integrity of hte corner angle (notorious for pulling apart!). So, I secured my hatch seal with contact cement and have never had an issue with it coming off.

That said, I installed the bottom section of the seal separate from the top section (going over the targa arch. So, I have an gap at the corner which can be later sealed with black RTV (and there are other methods as well).
