View Full Version : Max deduction for A/C that does not blow cold?

Any experts know what I can expect for a deduction total on the A/C that doesn't drop the recommended 20 degrees? I trusted my A/C guy a little too much and I don't have the time to address it prior to judging next weekend.

Little background on the car. Under 10K miles. all parts are factory installed. the only condition issue is a slightly rubbed aluminum crimp near the coolant crossover pipe. Blower motor, control center , all vents, heat work just fine.

Take it in for the AC now. It’s only going to get hotter!

It will be fixed, but I'm not letting some ham fisted tech pull my plenum to get to the compressor after a full restoration. I'll weigh my options... stay with R12 or go to R134. I've got bent windows in the 68' C10 and good air in my H3 Alpha for now!

Have them change it out to R134a. There are no hoses, switches or compressor to change out.

My was fixed a few weeks ago. It was a clutch switch that had gone bad. The R134a cools just fine.

Flight Judging or Performance Verification?

PV = Fail

Flight Judging = 25 points ( if they catch it )

I WISH it was that easy on my car. wont hold a vac test. spent 98% of its life in dry Colorado so I suspect seals -everywhere.

Flight Judging. 25 points is minimal in the overall picture. The repair is not doable before I leave on the 16th. Maybe I'll get the flight judging completed first, install new parts..then go for the PV.

R12 compressor runs when jumped at the switch. A forum member recommended rebuilding it while my plenum was off over the winter, but we just suspected bad schrader valves. The R12 compressor rebuild kits are cheap and would allow me to keep all the date coded factory parts VS. putting 94-95 parts in and making it functional. that is "IF" the factory line crimps are still holding....my oil cooler lines sure didnt.

Even though you cant read the part number/ date code of a 91 compressor ( its on the bottom) How much of a points deduction comes with putting 94-95 134a parts into a 91 car?

WHY am I going down this rabbit hole! I should have put my Port and polished top end form my other motor on the car over the winter along with my factory A-molds, period correct modified Borla exhaust & short shifter and been driving it all summer!!! :o

The 94-95 AC parts are metric and 90-93 are US customary measures.

Flight judging is 25 points for operations but they only feel for cold. Since the system is tested with fan speeds, Defrost, heat, etc. you should not see a total fail anyway. Again for PV, don't bother it is a total failure. Good luck with your flight judging and you should do fine. Let us know how it ends up.

I gathered that from subfixer's thread...

http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=30748

At this point it would be an "all in" proposition with everything being never 134 components if I couldnt get the system to hold a vac after rebuilding the R12 compressor and installing new gaskets/o-rings everywhere. I tend to through more $$$ at repairs and fix everything at once.

thanks, pretty clear it has to be 100% to pass the performance verification. More importantly, it gets HOT here and with all the californians and texans moving to Colorado, A/C is a must for happy cruising in traffic ...even in a "dry" heat.

My clutch switch is acting up. Purchased a new one off ebay but not correct. Where did you get yours?
Thanks
