Putting my car back together after a motor swap and found a grounding strap attached to the positive battery cable. What is the purpose of this strap?

I would like to see a picture of that :p
One strap goes to starter under Coils and one strap to main electrical terminal between Battery and Fire Wall. Neither Strap is called a "grounding Strap".

I would not "ground" the positive battery terminal, unless you need very brief, very bright, very dangerous and expensive light.

Above poster Dynomite has it correct.

I found the answer. It’s a grounding strap that is just taped to the positive battery cable since it routes in the same direction. The strap grounds the engine block to the frame of the car.

Picture and your explanation make perfect sense.
I had also been thinking of the two connections, not the added strap.

The braided ground strap is used to conduct high frequency electrical noise. High frequency in the megahertz or radio frequency range. High frequency current travels on the surface of a conductor. The so called skin current effect. The fibers in the braid have much more surface area than a stranded wire.

How do I know this? I'm amature radio licensee KB9KYQ. Any radio technician knows this.
