View Full Version : Black top or colored top?
For those who do not own a black Z, do you prefer to drive with the solid color matching top or the black clear top?

Loaded question for sure!
I just like the way the car looks form the side with the body color top on, as it picks up the halo and completes it.
With the tinted top, it blends in with all of the other glass and blacked out trim, which many may like, but it seems to break it up too much.
I am sure "your mileage may vary"

Black car and top that looks black whether
bronze or blue? Doesn’t make a whole lot of difference...
See thru top is 10 lbs lighter but fiberglass top is
cooler in some climates...
I use the clear black top with a tint on it to keep sunlight to minimum.
Also it is lighter but does give the car a different look.
I feel I really need some black 18" wheels with the color combo.

You need the solid top for high speed corners to protect the windshield from flex.

I think our cars look so much better with the painted top. I sold my original painted top when I 1st got the car years ago, needed the money for headers and didn't think I would ever use it. Now many years later I bought a used blue top, had it painted red, and redid the headliner. I probably have a $1000.00 dollars in the solid color top, but it makes the car.

I prefer the black top on mine. It gets to hot with the tinted top for me.

I use the blue top November thru February. The red painted top the rest of the year. The blue top is lighter and not as rigid but I can't really tell the difference when driving.I can definitely tell the difference in the suns rays here in Florida.

I’ll put the glass top on the car every once in awhile to break things up but the black cars got the best of both worlds, transparent top but dark so it doesn’t break up the look of the car.

My first C4 was an Artic white 96. It came with just the painted top. I purchased a blue tinted top from Astro Tops and used it exclusively until the top started to separate on the left drivers corner. My second car was a black 91 that I used the bronze tinted top in spring time only. Summer and winter I switched to the painted top. My current Z is a Turquoise car with the blue tinted top. I have yet to use the painted top on the car. Another observation I found was that the tinted tops make the radio sound a bit more trebly. The painted top with the headliner absorb sound waves verses the tinted top bouncing the waves around.

Looking at my build sheet, seems mine was just ordered with the clear top. Which is what I have. I would love a Solid Polo green top, but now I like the look of the clear top.
And DAMN did I learn a lesson Easter Sunday!!! After doing the family brunch, I decided to take the top off and go for a cruise. Well I had parked in the sun, and WOW!!!! That top was hotter than a whore on dollar day lol....I can't imagine you guys with the all black interior in the summer.

If I had the black top I would probably like that better in the summer here in TX.

You should get a tint for your clear top.

Tint for the top is on my list of things to do. I had thought about doing a carbon fibre wrap on the top and the remainder fo the roof, but it may look a bit too "modern" so to speak.

Why to modern, half of my car is Carbon Fiber.

I seen a C4 at a car show last year that had his top, rockers and front spoiler wrapped in carbon fiber and I thought it looked pretty good.. He said it cost him 750. The car was black so there wasn't a huge contrast in colors but it was different but didn't look out of place per say...

I found this yellow Z online with the black top and black halo.

I am 99% sure I am going to wrap my halo black.
The new 18's are on the car!!!
I purchased a blow dryer off e-bay but it is too weak and need to get a stronger one to heat up the wrap material.

Blue tint Plexiglas or no top with truss bar.

Painted top. When I got the car, the painted top was not included, so I bought one and had it painted.

My car had two tops when I bought it with 3Kmi. in 94'. But I'm a "coupe guy". I kept the white body color top and left the "see through" black one with the dealer for $500.00. That top has never been off the car in 27 years, except for cleaning and adjustment.
A see through top is a poor choice here in the Florida heat with the C4 ZR-1's feeble air conditioning. Too flexible also. JMHO.
I prefer the red top from a look perspective, but at 6'4, I do enjoy the extra room the clear one offers.

I'm with you Bob. Both my ZR-1s had extra tops that I never used. They just sat in the basement. The '95 actually came with a transparent top that was an aftermarket replacement made of Lexan. It was crazed so I got a stock type from Melrose Tops. But it also sat and went with the car when I sold it. I think I put it on once just to see what it was like and concluded I didn't like it. So I stuck with the solid color tops. When I ordered my 2016 Z06 coupe I did not select the dual top option, got just the standard equipment body colored top. Rarely even take that off. Lesson learned. --Bob

When I had my C5 I would change between the two depending on the seasons and heat, but it was way easier to do that by just loosening the clamps holding it on and it only took a minute or two. The C4 is a much more of a PIA with the 4 bolts that have to be individually removed, so my solid color top stays on, for now.

When I'm ambitious, the transparent top goes on in spring and fall. Solid top in summer to help the AC stay cold.

I would definitely like to source a body colored top for my 94 in competition yellow. It's nice to have the clear top in cooler weather, but in the 90+ degree days it gets a little hot.

You can install one of these which is static cling and removable or apply nano ceramic window tint.

Although I have both tops, I prefer the clear top without a doubt. I kind of get claustrophobic with the painted one on and feel too confined. My air conditioner works great and have no problem in the heat of the summer.
