9388. I’ve got two purple wires and one lavender to choose from for the relay to try and fix my periodic no start. Which one do I use for the relay?

I think its on the upper left,it’s going to be thicker than most of the wires in that bundle. Check out a sticky I did on the other forum for a full write up on the process. Everything you need to know it there with pictures.

Thank you. Could you post a link. I printed out what we had on this site. Couldn’t find a
good pic to help though.

Hans, someone posted on the relay thread that I’ve got the wiring at the relay wrong. Can somebody take a look at what I’ve posted in the thread and confirm the wiring setup is right?

Interesting it appears TCCrabs has a third way to wire it. Here is his post from 2010.
H

“SPDT Relay : (Single Pole Double Throw Relay) an electromagnetic switch, consist of a coil (terminals 85 & 86), 1 common terminal (30), 1 normally closed terminal (87a), and one normally open terminal (87) (Figure 1).

When the coil of an SPDT relay is at rest (not energized), the common terminal (30) and the normally closed terminal (87a) have continuity. When the coil is energized, the common terminal (30) and the normally open terminal (87) have continuity.

Pin #87: Purple wire to the starter
Pin #30: Battery positive 12v
Pin #86: Battery ground
Pin #85: Purple wire from ECM
Pin #87a: Not used

The purple wire lives in the big loom just after the ECM. Peel back the ribbed covering and dig around. There is only one purple wire.
Cut the purple wire carefully noting which end leads down to the starter and which end comes out of the back of the ECM.
Use similar sized wire (10 or 12 gauge if I recall correctly).
Black wire doesn't stand out like bright red or yellow.

I hid my relay under the ECM, Paul (in the picture above) hid his in the battery area.”

So we have...

Pin #30: Battery positive 12v
Pin #86: Battery ground
Pin #85: Purple wire from ECM
Pin #87a: Not used

#30 - Purple wire TO starter.
#87 - B+ Hot at All Times from junction block
#86 - Purple wire FROM key switch
#85 - Ground.

#30 - Purple wire to starter.
#87 - Other end of Purple wire
#85 - 12 volt power at the junction block down by the battery
#86 - goes to ground.
#87A - is not used

Here’s Paul Workman’s nice diagram. Wish he would have identified the terminal numbers. Paul can you help us out here?

Pin #87: Purple wire to the starter
Pin #30: Battery positive 12v
Pin #86: Battery ground
Pin #85: Purple wire from ECM
Pin #87a: Not used

Wiring modified a bit to assure Pin #87a is not hot at any time.
Pin #30: Purple wire to starter (use 3/8 inch connector on relay).
Pin #87: Red wire battery positive 12v use 3/8 inch connector on relay (connected to battery positive multiple connection post).
Pin #86: Battery ground (1/4 inch connector on relay connected to ground where battery 12 gauge wire grounded).
Pin #85: Purple wire from ECM use 1/4 inch connector on relay (Red wire on early 1990 ZR-1).
Pin #87a: Not hot at any time and not used.

Insert a short 1/2 inch long section of plastic hose
over the center connector on the Relay which is NOT
used in this application.

I wired this thing up based on info provided by one of these diagrams posted on this site or the other. I’ve never had an issue with a constant drain based on how I have this wired up.

Thanks Cliff... and now we have a 4th way to wire it. I imagine there could be multiple ways but are any of these incorrect?
