Specifically, I have the bronze clear top with this car's VIN etched into the frame. I think it should go back with the correct car.

Do all the glass tops have the vin etched in them?

FYI #1617 is not listed in the registry data base. The owner(s) likely have never been members.

The last info for 1990 # 1617 was when it was listed on eBay in January 2008. The seller was Cooper Corvettes in Triangle, VA (south of DC).

Really - I checked mine out last night for my car and couldn't find a vin on the top. Maybe it was not done in 1990 cars.

I believe they all had it.
The transparent top had it etched as stated, while the fiberglass top had the last 3 or 4 digits handwritten on a piece of masking tape over the etching.

My car has a bronze top, so it that the one that should only have 3-4 numbers or the whole vin# ?

John,
I have '90 #0442. My glass top has only been installed 1 time. It still has the decals front center on the glass and a piece of masking tape with "987" hand written on it at front center. No clue what the "987" refers to.
The last 9 digits of the cars serial number are etched/stamped into the glass top frame on the drivers side front.
Here's a couple of pics so you will know what I am seeing on mine.

Hey Kenny - Now I know where to look for the stamp marking. I know there is no tape on mine. Will check it out tonight.

Thanks

Thanks. Was hoping to find the car, but it might not be possible I guess.

Thanks. Was hoping to find the car, but it might not be possible I guess.I think it's great that you posted here. The owner might join the forums later, and if he or she searches the archives for the VIN this thread will turn up. So hang on to it, or if you sell it update this thread so the trail can be followed.

I am confused. Just looked at my plexiglass top and found no serial# in that locaton. The frame on my top doesn't even have that angled boss where the serial # is pictured. I am the 2nd owner of my car bought it with 4800 miles on it, thought it was pretty much original. Any ideas? jim

Not really an idea off hand. Does the build sheet or window sticker show it was a 2 top car?
Post up some pics of what you have and I bet someone on here can help figure it out.

FWIW: I always heard not all clear tops were etched with the Vin #?
My original clear top was gone when I got the car, so I can’t
say from experience... Fortunately, I found a NOS top after I got
the car.

Corvette Tops:

These tops have some interesting peculiarities.

1- When the cars get sold, oftentimes owners keep the top with plans to sell the top themselves to increase what they "think" they will get for the car.
While sometimes they may get money for the top, the car might have sold for a bit more if it had both, especially when the window sticker or parts label states that it was a roof package car.
2- Some owners, or their families simply forget to put it back in the car when it goes for sale.
3- The "Flying Roof Fraternity" I always instruct new owners to IMMEDIATLY tighten the bolts ( or flip the levers on newer cars) to secure the top.
If they forget, then they are likely to join the fraternity within the first 5 minutes of their next drive.
Such membership ensures the car will now either be minus a top or equipped with a new replacement.
4- Theft
5- Careless handling or dropping of the top.

Any of those things may result in a car missing it's numbered tops.
Rather common occurrence.

That's a good one Ross!
I took the "or else" option! Might have been some other extenuating circumstances at play too.
