View Full Version : OBX Headers a heat concern?

I am having stainless OBX headers installed on my '90 Z. Has anyone had any heat issues with these? Seems like the original heat shields are there for a reason. Also, does anyone know for certain if I will need an O2 extension cable? Thanks so much!

I have Watson headers and they are Ceramic coated which helps regarding heat

I’m running OBX headers and cats. I have noticed additional heat buildup inside the car but not to the point where it has caused any issues. If I had to do it again I would have them coated and add some reflective heat shielding in the bellhousing and trans tunnel area under the car. And yes you will need an O2 extension on the passenger side only.

All headers are a heat concern. If you can swing it I suggest getting them ceramic or Jet hot coated. If not wrap them. You are correct those heat shields are there for a reason. Yes you need extensions for at least the passenger side and prob a new dipstick seal. GC

I have OBX headers without cats and no coating. I noticed a slight increase in heat but it's not a big deal. I hardly notice it. I just have the heat shields that attach to the floor.
As others have stated, you will need a passenger side extension.

Appreciate the response...could you possibly tell me if this is the correct extension? I don't trust that Ebay knows if it fits or not. And I also can't get a good look at the plug on my car. Thanks!

You will also need Paul Workmans dipstick relocation bracket (patent pending).

No that extension will not work. Its a single wire and our O2s are 3 wire heated sensors. I may have an extension or could make one. Someone else may also.

And... a dipstick seal. Jerry's Gaskets has those. GC

Hmmm coming from AZ and daily driving two ZR-1s I will have to disagree with my Minnesota colleague. Wrap em at least. It's harder when everything is installed.

I might have an extra extension

Agreed... that and a new seal will save a few headaches down the road.

Do you need this only when using OBX headers? I didnt need one and it went in smooth as butter.... I have Watsons.

Actually ANY current available header yes. Only the Jeal headers and Watson Headers NLA except as used fit as they should. No dipstick relocation mods needed. All required a longer passenger O2 sensor harness however. GC

My former '92 had OBX jet jot coated inside and out. I would always jet hot coat a header and use some type of heat shield in the trans tunnel.

My '93 has coated headers and so did my '85.

My SW LT headers are NOT coated, and I have no heat "issues". Haven't used the AC in 7 years and don't miss it. Instead, I use the window "link" which I really like anyway.

The floor doesn't get uncomfortable - I don't even notice it (heat). However, the tunnel does get pretty warm, so warn that my cell phone will shut down (self preservation mode).

I rolled the dice on coating: In retrospect I prolly would have them coated. But, it isn't very high on my "to do" list (apparently).

I used to ride a motorcycle. One of the unexpected pleasures when riding is the aromas as you ride along: fields of flowers, fresh mowed hay, the ocean, etc. I don't get that in a car with the windows rolled up and the AC on. But! Soon as I install the widow link, all the aromas return. I'm in NO hurry to fire up the AC, and therefore neither am I chomping at the bit to coat the headers either. Just sayin.

The Watson headers on my '91 were just coated. Though tucked in the NW of the country, I highly recommend Performance Coatings in Auburn, WA, performancecoating.com. Very quick service, 1 week, multitude of color options, and excellent results. $345 per set. With tax (WA), environment fee, and shipping, $422. Following break-in heat cycle procedures to ensure adherence.

Swain Coatings in New York does a great job.

Mine were done by Cerakote At Northeast Coatings. They are right down the street from me. Cerkote has regional certified application specialist. They worked out very well for me.

I bought the Maximizer sandblasted headers on sale. The sandblasted finish worked well for coating them.

Here is everything you will need to install headers on a 1990 ZR1. I hope this helps someone save lots of research time.
(1) O2 sensor extension
(16) header bolts
75' of 2" header wrap
High temp silicone spray
Paul Workman's dipstick bracket
Dipstick seal from Jerry's Gaskets
Stainless zip ties
Jerry's Gaskets header gaskets (do not use gaskets supplied with headers)
Headers!

Old thread I know, but I just got my new headers (OBX) back from the coaters,( I used local guys that have been doing powder coat of all of my parts including the top end of the engine), it is a very high temperature coating but it is not as good as Jet Coat or Swain, so I am also going to wrap them in DEI Titanium wrap. I would like to see pictures of wrapped headers as I am not sure the way I am going to wrap the runners that are too close together to wrap individually . I was also concerned with heat to the (new) clutch lines and electrical connectors. I currently plan to wrap the headers to the end of the faux resonators only. Any thoughts of additional heat shielding on the tunnel or anywhere else? I did heat insulate the drivers side interior cabin with adhesive heat barrier mats.

Might want to do some research before wrapping those.

There seems to be a concern over issues with moisture being trapped under the wrap which causes corrosion and rust.

OBX headers are stainless so it might be OK, but definitely an issue with steel exhaust pipes.

On my '66, I used insulating blankets on the exhaust pipes. They are open on the bottom but provide a heat barrier between the pipes and anything to the sides or above.

Here is a good place to start and someone to ask about wrapping headers.
