View Full Version : DIC Bulb Location

As I have the radio control head out to get Dr. Don to fix the CD, I went ahead and pulled the AC control to clean the button contacts. As the only thing left was the DIC I went ahead and pulled it out to look it over and clean it up.
While checking the bulbs, I noticed in the FSM that there is a bulb location that is not indicated in the owners manual. The FSM identifies it as "ABS Active". The FSM also has the "Service ABS" and "ABS Active" reversed from their location in the DIC according to the markings on the lens.
I guess my question is, does the "ABS Active" position need a bulb?
By the way, my car is '90 #442.
Thanks Guys!

As a follow up to the above:
At the bottom right on the DIC lens it is marked "Low Oil". No where am I seeing that a bulb is supposed to be in this location.
Is this correct?

No oil level sensor for 90' on oil pan.
This is the Oil Level Sensor on a 95' Oil Pan......

Make sure your oil pressure gauge is functioning properly. It’s your best friend next to water temp!

Thanks for the responses Guys.
I was pretty sure about the oil level, but never hurts to ask!
Anyone have an idea anout the ABS lights? I am unable to find any info about an "ABS Active" light.

i believe ABS active lights up when activated, i.e. braking on slippery surface.

I figured that was how it is supposed to function.
I went ahead and left the bulb in it. It does not light up when turning the key on, but maybe it is not supposed to? The others function as they are supposed to. I checked all the bulbs and they are good.
Guess I could find a slick road and go slide around a little to see if it comes on.
On second thought I probably will not do that!

I know it's a long time since this was posted, but I have a similar question for a 1990 ZR-1 that I have. On ignition turn on, I have no 'Service ABS' light that appears either in the DIC or cluster. The 1990 FSM indicates on page 5E-5 that the amber 'Anti Lock' warning lamp in the instrument panel illuminates and, when the engine is started, goes out. The 1990 Owners Manual shows a 'Service ABS' under Driver Information Center. However, the GM Corvette Central Control Module book indicates, on Figure 3-29, that the Service ABS light was only on 1991 - 1994.
So, is there an ABS Warning Light that illuminates when the ignition is first turned on for a 1990?

Richard,
I think it lights up, but honestly don't remember for sure. Damned old age!!
I will be at my car either this evening or tomorrow. Will check and let you know.

Richard,
Was at the car today, so verified the "Service ABS" light operation on it.
The "Service ABS" light illuminates for a short period upon turning the ignition on. Does not stay on very long at all. Maybe 2 seconds then goes out.
Location of the light is immediately to the right of the "Service Engine" light which stays on until car is started.
For reference, my car is a '90 # 0442. I would assume all 90's would function the same, but you know what assuming gets you!!

The ABS is normal as it goes through a start up check upon starting you can even hear the pump behind you momentarily whirring behind the drivers seat

Thanks for the replies. No 'Service ABS' light appears in the DIC on initial ignition switch on. The ABS unit behind the driver's seat does whir for a short while on ignition turn on. I know that there is a bulb in the 'Service ABS' location within the DIC as I took a picture of it some while ago when I had the DIC removed. What I do not know is whether that bulb works or has blown! I will check this out. Thanks again.

The 'ABS Active' indication was first implemented in '91. It will turn on for a second during the pump self test when the car goes to about 8 mph following key on. In '91 a relay was added to drive the light. The light can be activated on a '90 if you copy the wiring and add the relay as shown in the '91 service manual. I did it once to diagnose a '90 car with big brakes and was locking the wheels too much. The solution to the problem was to change to a brake pad with less friction.

Thanks Marc - Really interesting and informative information, especially to those of us with 1990 ZR-1's.
