I replaced the pumps a while ago. A year ago the primary pump started blowing the fuse. Stuck a high amp fuse and it held. I'm replacing with an AC Delco, but i don't know which is primary.

Is it the upper or lower pump?

The upper looks more used, there is more debris on the sock...

I think it is the upper one, but not totally sure. Better look in your FSM, it will tell you.
If for some reason you don't have a FSM (???), let me know & I'll look it up for you..
By the way, while you have the sending unit out, you need to get with Carter for a "Y" fitting to replace the original plastic one.

Curiosity got the better of me, so, I checked the FSM. The primary is the upper pump.
You also need to make sure the unit holds pressure before re-installing.
ie: pump check valve or connection leaks.
Have a great one!!

shoot ran out of daylight, replaced the lower no wonder the fuse is still hot as hell. :)

That (hot electrical) is not good for a whole lot of reasons.

When working on the fuel pump system you need to replace the plastic "Y" with my billet "Y" to assure no leaks in the future. The plastic "Y" has been discontinued so makes sense to replace the plastic piece with a billet one.

Does anyone have a photo of the Billet " Y"?

Here's a couple of pics. This is the first one Carter made. I recommended that the barbed length be shortened a little on future fittings. There is a limited amount of area that all this needs to stay in, so just a little here & there makes a difference.

I've had it in place for a couple of months. Works fine. No leaks, and a whole lot better than an old piece of plastic!

Thanks I'll look into that, how much is the new Y?

Had a wire installed in place of the primary fuse. With the car running, and AC on the voltage dropped to 11-12vdc, turning on the turn signal made the voltage fluctuate a lot. Pulled the wire, killing the pump, engine still running, the voltage jumped to normal and stopped fluctuating with the turn signal. Definitely found the voltage issue that's been killing alternators.

Off to the parts house!
