View Full Version : Anyone install an aftermarket heat shield system in trans tunnel?
On my '93 I noticed there are no heat shields next to the exhaust manifolds like on the '92 I had. The foot well seems to get pretty warm.
Anyone install an aftermarket heat shield barrier in the trans tunnel?
eBay has factory ZR-1 heat shields but at $120+ each I am looking at other options.
Thank you.

Just wait till you install headers. I’m looking at the same thing right now. It will be added to my winter project.

There are stock heat shields that were installed at the factory. I looked at installing additional heat shield when I pulled my trans out to let Bill B. rebuild it. I've still got the material. I found it very hard to match the contour of the trans tunnel with the material I bought. I've not really had an issue even with full SW headers, so the "pain wasn't worth the gain" to me..

What I modified on my car, it has SW headers.
- modified the original heat shields so they fit proper with headers.
- Installed “Cool it” thermo tec in the trans tunnel.
- Installed the same Cool it thermo tec on the inside underneath the carpet.
Big improvement less heat and noises. But the car is about 8 kilogram heavier as a downside ;-)

I too used an after-market type of blanket on my wife's 69 C3 w/ headers. I got it at a local speed shop, so I imagine Summit Racing (or the like) would have it too.
It is a fabric mat with a heavy aluminum reflective foil on one side and the other side is the adhesive side. that can be molded to fit the tunnel to reduce heat.
It works quite well! And, for further heat control, have you considered wrapping your headers with HEAT WRAP TAPE? Just some thoughts.

One note to add.. I sent my SW headers out to be ceramic coated. Even though they are stainless, the coating preserves the finish and also reduces radiant heat..
