Day 1 Tuesday morning at the house. We got underway at about 0730:

We drove to Harrisburg, PA and got on I-83 North. Central Pennsylvania and New York are beautiful. We had great weather and enjoyed seeing all the farms:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0021.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0021.jpg.html)

We stopped in Syracuse, NY to see one of the finest Art Deco buildings there is. The Niagara Mohawk National Grid Building:

We crossed the international border into Canada and followed the St Lawrence River east through the 1000 Islands region. The scenery was beautiful and we enjoyed the homes built on islands:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0185.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0185.jpg.html)

In Brockville, Ontario, we visited the Canadian Pacific train tunnel under the city. It is the first railroad tunnel built in Canada and has been turned into a very nice park:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0236.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0236.jpg.html)

After sight seeing, we stopped in a local Pub for a refreshing beverage:

Day 2 We left Brockville by 7:00 am and drove east a little towards Ottawa to pick up Trans Canada 17. It was a clear cool morning, great for driving:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0313.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0313.jpg.html)

Heading west from Ottawa, we drove through a lot of prosperous looking farms:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0314.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0314.jpg.html)

We stopped for gas in Spencerville, ON and found this pair of beautiful Chevrolet trucks:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Restoration%20business%20Spencerville%20Canada.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Restoration%20business%20Spencerville%20Canada.jpg .html)

In Renfrew, ON we there is and old Post Office building with this interesting clock tower:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0328.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0328.jpg.html)

As we continued west toward Sudbury, the landscape became hillier with more lakes. The hills and curves and sparse traffic made the driving fun:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0363.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0363.jpg.html)

In the town of Mattawa we found this Quonset Hut that has been converted into the town movie theater. It makes me wonder how big the screen is:

Thank you for the road conditions report. We will get to GNP in 4 days. As of this evening's Status report, there is still a section of the highway closed. Our first day in the Park we are on the East side at Many Glaciers Hotel, so I guess we can live with the closure. Then we move around to Lake McDonald Lodge.

I hope they get it cleared by the 25th, I didn't bring snow tires.

Day 3 - Today we drove from Sudbury, ON across the north shore of Lake Huron to Sault Ste Marie where we crossed the border back into the US and then across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Marquette, MI.

West of Sudbury we discovered a large Amish Barn Raising event:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Day%203%20Amish%20Barn%20Raising.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Day%203%20Amish%20Barn%20Raising.jpg.html)

The parking lot lot behind the house was full of buggies and horses:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Amish%20buggies%20at%20the%20Barn%20Raising.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Amish%20buggies%20at%20the%20Barn%20Raising.jpg.ht ml)

We visited Thessalon, ON, on the north shore of Lake Huron. We found an old bridge that complimented the Purple Z:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Pink%20Bridge%20at%20Thessalon.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Pink%20Bridge%20at%20Thessalon.jpg.html)

We were looking for light houses to photograph and we got a suggestion to go to Bruce Bay and get permission from the proprietor of Bruce Cabins to visit their private light house. After a careful drive on a dirt road, we found an interesting light house:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Causeway%20to%20Bruce%20Lake%20Lighthouse.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Causeway%20to%20Bruce%20Lake%20Lighthouse.jpg.html )

West of Bruce Bay, we found another Amish farm and this Amish woman painting fence posts:

Just before we left Ontario, we stopped to see the largest Canadian $1 coin, the Loony:

The international bridge at Sault Ste Marie crosses the Soo locks that connect the Lake Superior with Lake Huron:

After crossing the border, we stopped for gas and were joined by two Model T Fords and a Model A Ford that were touring Michigan and Minnesota:

We drove up the shore of Whitefish Bay of Lake Superior and spent some time at Iroquois Point Lighthouse:

About GNP Road to the Sun closure. Road was closed during my first trip there, but they would allow traffic up to the last turn around before the closure. We took that opportunity, then drove around to the West side & did the same thing. Nice trip(s) but nothing like traversing the summit though, which we did on a subsequent trip. Will be hoping the road is open all the way through for you (and no fog if it is :-).

Best wishes for a safe, enjoyable & uneventful trip.

Nice to finally put a picture to place, thanks Jim and Lyndi.
Have always been a big Gordon Lightfoot fan, the Wreck of The Edmond Fitzgerald is by far his best/biggest hit. Just never found my way to that part of the lake.

Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Day 4 - We drove west from Marquette to Grand Rapids, MN. The weather was perfect for driving and the traffic was light. The morning sun and still water created an interesting view:

Continuing our search for photogenic lighthouses, we drove to L'Anse Bay on the southern shore of Lake Superior to find Sand Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was easy to find and had good access. Restoration was in progress:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0150%20-%20Copy.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0150%20-%20Copy.jpg.html)

While we were there we enjoyed watching some Canadian Geese with their chicks:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0098.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0098.jpg.html)

We drove further west to look for the Otonagon Lighthouse. After several tries to reach the site we found out that the lighthouse was on private property, and could only be viewed from in the town, across the river. We returned there and after walking out to the quay wall we were rewarded by a nice view of the lighthouse:

We continued west and crossed the northern tip of Wisconsin and reached Duluth, MN. We drove down town to the River Front area. We were very impressed by the vibrant, urban downtown area. We visited the Vertical Lift Bridge that is a Duluth icon:

On our way out of Duluth, I spotted a steam locomotive on display. In is one of the last big, articulated steam engines built in the 1940's. It is called a 2-8-8-2 Mallet Type loco and this one, #225, hauled coal trains on the Duluth, Massabe and Iron Range Railroad.

Day 5 - On Saturday, we drove from Grand Rapids to Minot, North Dakota. The whole trip was on US-2, the longest US Highway. We stopped in Grand Forks, ND to visit the Saturday Town Square Farmers Market. We found a small but nice town market with farm products, some crafts and food.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0047%20Farmers%20Market%20Grand%20Fork%20ND.jp g (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0047%20Farmers%20Market%20Grand%20Fork%20ND.jp g.html)

And one interesting sculpture:

In Grand Rapids we found a series of very small houses that were interesting:

Central North Dakota has a lot of farms. We saw some fields of canola and many grain elevators. One of the largest was this one loading train cars:

We continued west and decided that the Purple Z needed a wash after 4 days of smashing bugs. We found a Dukes carwash, the same name as a carwash back in Westminster.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0068%20Dukes%20Car%20Wash.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0068%20Dukes%20Car%20Wash.jpg.html)

Immediately after the carwash, we encountered some extreme weather. We were racing the storms and lightning. We drove several miles with about 50 yard visibility.

Hi Jm and Lyndi--So far it looks like a great trip! When you get to Victoria I hope you plan to stay at the Empress Hotel--a beautiful, classic old hotel that I believe still serves traditional English afternoon tea at 4 PM. For many years now it has been a Fairmont. And there is a grand building across the street that houses the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia built in 1898. Since 2007 it has been fully illuminated at night with 3500 energy efficient light bulbs (an impressive sight) but when I was there in the '70s locals pointed out that the exterior lighting originated from the dawn of commercial electricity use and many light bulbs still operating then were original Thomas Edison bulbs. And don't miss Butchart Gardens while there.

Dede and I are also headed out on a road trip next week, but much more modest than yours--only a week long. I don't think she could stand being in the car any longer. Off to a Corvette gathering in Niagara On The Lake, Ontario, then on to visit relatives in New York state (while the rest of the group goes to the races north of Toronto), then home via Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater home and the Auburn Cord Duesenberg museum. Enjoy your trip--I am envious.--Bob

Wow! Nice cars!

The red/yellow one looks to be a mid 30s Duesenberg, based on the body style and shape of the yellow "swoosh" on the side, and the emblem on the wheel centers (comparing with other pix of Duesies). Did I guess correctly?

This (I guess) was the "Corvette" of its time. It may have been owned by or perhaps just attributed to Clark Gable, IDK.

Jeff, as Dennis says, I am told it is definitely worth a trip. It is only about 4 hours or so out of Chicago. It's the last stop on our trip. We're planning to arrive nearby the night before, have a nice dinner, tour the museum in the morning then head on home that day. But I will let you know my thoughts after we go. --Bob

Jim, out of curiosity, how many hours to you spend driving each day? I'm setting my trip for roughly 4 to 6-1/2 hours of driving each day but with far fewer stops that you seem able to accomplish. We will try to stop whenever we see something interesting. But as this is a 7 day trip we do have to get to destinations each night. Anyway, enjoy yours. Great to hear about it as you go.--Bob

Hi Bob, On this Road Trip, we have reduced our miles-per-day so we can see more sights and not get so tired. Between home and Glacier NP we did about 350-400 miles a day, which is 5.5 to 6 hours of driving each day.

We get up early and are very organized so that we are in the Z and rolling by 7:00 am. That way we can get to our destination by 2 pm and sight see when attractions are still open OR we can stop at intermediate attractions and spend 4 hours sight-seeing.

After we get to Victoria, BC we will drive about 200 miles a day to get even more time to look around.

I am sorry that we will miss you at Falling Water. We have talked about visiting there again. It is not too far from us.

Have a good trip,

Jim

Day 7 - We left Harve, MT and drove west on US-2 across Montana, headed for Glacier National Park.

The landscape of western Montana is a combination of flat agricultural land and hilly prairie. As always we like the productive farms that we passed. This farm has canola and wheat in production:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0032%20Tree%20in%20field%20near%20Havre.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0032%20Tree%20in%20field%20near%20Havre.jpg.ht ml)

In Shelby, MT, we were confronted by a flooded intersection directly in the underpass we needed to use to stay on US-2. Shelby is not a very big town and there were no side roads that we could use to go around the intersection. We had to drive about 5 miles north on I-15, then U-turned to get back on US-2:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0192%20water%20main%20Break%20Shelby.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0192%20water%20main%20Break%20Shelby.jpg.html)

In Cut Bank, MT, we couldn't resist a photo with the Penguin proclaiming Cut Bank as the "Coldest spot in the nation":

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0213%20Cut%20Bank%20Coldest%20Spot%20in%20the% 20us.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0213%20Cut%20Bank%20Coldest%20Spot%20in%20the% 20us.jpg.html)

I do not know if this is true. The peak of Mount Washington in New Hampshire makes the claim of having the coldest temperature in the country.

We always like to see trains hauling freight and keeping the nation moving. Here is a nice BNSF locomotive pair with a consist of grain cars with the Rocky Mountains in the background:

We entered Glacier NP from the east side and planned to stay at Many Glacier Hotel on the Swift Current Lake. The road from Babb, MT to the Park Entrance is in need or repair. There are numerous pot holes and damaged areas. We did make it to the park, but it was slow going.

The road follows a reservoir that feeds the Milk River:

For the first two days at Glacier National Park, we stayed at the Many Glacier Hotel, one of the three original lodges that were built in what was to become the national park. The lodge was built more than 100 years ago and refurbished last year. The lodge is one of the nicest hotel experiences we have had.

In the evening, we sat in the lounge over looking the lake and spotted a moose grazing on the edge of the lake:

The next morning we were treated to a beautiful view as the morning sun reflected off the clouds and illuminated the mountains:

Day 8 - At Glacier National Park

On Tuesday morning we took a Red Bus Tour of the Eastern Alpine regions of the Park:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0087.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0087.jpg.html)

The tour lasted about 4 hours and was conducted by an experienced guide in one of the 32 restored busses the Park Service owns. I highly recommend going on a tour to get a "lay of the land" about the Park. It was a windy and blustery day in the Park for the 2nd day. Even with the top rolled back, the bus was a comfortable vehicle for touring.

One of the prominent features of the east portion of the Park is St Mary Lake:

That afternoon we decided to hike to Apikuni Falls. The trail head was about 2 miles from the hotel and the hike was .9 miles, one way, up hill:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0054.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0054.jpg.html)

Along the way we found a cute Ground Squirrel:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0074.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0074.jpg.html)

After about 50 minutes of hiking up hill, we got our first view of the falls:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0080.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0080.jpg.html)

We found another squirrel on the rocks below the falls:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0087_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0087_1.jpg.html)

When we finally reached the top of the trail we got a wonderful view of the falls:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0126.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0126.jpg.html)

There are many of falls like Apikuni Falls in the park. Most are the run off of melting snow in the mountains. By the middle of July, most of the snow will be gone and all the falls will be dry.

Day 9 - At Glacier NP - Driving from the East Side to the West Side of the Park.

On Wednesday, we awakened to an amazing view from our room of the moon setting over the mountains and the lake:

Here is a view of the Many Glacier Hotel Lobby:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0134%20Lobby%20Many%20Glaciers.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0134%20Lobby%20Many%20Glaciers.jpg.html)

We left the Many Glacier area of the Park and drove out of the NP and South to the Two Medicines area in East Glacier, to one of the oldest lodges in the NP area. The Glacier Lodge was built by the Great Northern Railroad in the early 1900's. It is a beautiful lodge:

There is still a railroad station in East Glacier, MT that has daily passenger service on Amtrak's Empire Builder train that runs from Chicago to Seattle. The station faces the Glacier Lodge and there is a shuttle bus to transport passengers:

We left East Glacier and drove west, again on US-2. We crossed the Continental Divide, elevation 5216 feet:

We reached West Glacier and entered the NP again. We drove the first part of the Road To The Sun and arrived at the Lake MacDonald Hotel, the third of the original Glacier Park lodges:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0444%20Lobby%20Lake%20MacDonald%20Lodge.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0444%20Lobby%20Lake%20MacDonald%20Lodge.jpg.ht ml)

The Lake MacDonald Hotel sits on the shore of Lake MacDonald. It is a beautiful, historic lodge. I would rank this lodge as third of the big lodges in the Park because the view from the lodge across the lake does not include any of the tall mountains of the range and trees block most of the view of the lake.

The view from our room:

We enjoyed sitting on the second floor balcony over the lobby:

Day 10 - In Glacier National Park. On Thursday, we started the day early and drove the Going to the Sun Road. The Going to the Sun Road is the center piece of the spectacular Glacier NP. It allows car traffic from the west side to the east side of the Park. From Lake MacDonald on the west side the road goes from about 3,250 feet to the summit at Logan Pass at 6,667 feet (on my GPS). The road was built by the Great Northern Railroad crews that built the Great Northern's path across the Rocky Mountains. The road follows the contour on the mountains and make the minimum impact on the majesty of the landscape. There are two tunnels, hand cut from the stone mountains.

In the lobby before the trip, I found a lodge version of my cell phone that had no service and tried to make a call:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0004%20Phone%20at%20Lake%20MacDonald%20Lodge.j pg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0004%20Phone%20at%20Lake%20MacDonald%20Lodge.j pg.html)

Because we got an early start, we had the road to ourselves as we ascended:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0032.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0032.jpg.html)

A nice view of the mountains. The bike belonged to a young man from Boston who was our impromptu photographer:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0115%20Bicycler%20took%20photo.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0115%20Bicycler%20took%20photo.jpg.html)

This dramatic waterfall required a stone arch as the road climbed the mountain:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0131.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0131.jpg.html)

The Going to the Sun Road closes every year by the snowfall. Winter 2018 was a very cold and lengthy season and some parts of the Road were covered with 150 feet snow. The NP road crews finish clearing the snow and opened the road only two days before we arrived in the Park. There was still a lot of snow on the edges of the Road:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0174%20Snow%20drift%20on%20the%20road%206%2028 %2018.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0174%20Snow%20drift%20on%20the%20road%206%2028 %2018.jpg.html)

Another section of the road that required a triple arch of stone:

After visiting the Visitor Center at Logan Pass, we went to the east side of the Road to St Mary's Lake to hike along the lake shore from the Sun Point Trailhead to Baring Falls. We chose this hike because a forest fire two years ago burned most of the trees so the view of the lake and mountains was mostly unobstructed:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0409.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0409.jpg.html)

And then we reached the falls:

On the return hike back to Sun Point, the hikers we met reported that they had encountered a large grizzly bear that stood up in the path and challenged the group twice before going up the hillside and over the ridge. We had to pass back through the area where the bear had been to get back to the Purple Z. We hiked quickly and made a lot of noise to deter the bear from approaching the path again. We made it back without encountering the bear.

Oh, simply STUNNING photos! I can almost hear those water falls and smell the pine mixed with that mountain air!

Bears:

Recommend you wear tiny bells on your clothes to let them know where you are, and carry PEPPER SPRAY in case one needs to defend against a bear.

Of Black bears vs. Grizzlies, the latter are the more aggressive species. By reading their scat (poop) you can know which species' territory you're invading.

Black bear scat is similar in appearance to that of a large dog. Grizzly scat is much larger and often filled with tiny bells and smells like pepper spray!

Jim, you said one of the roads had 150 feet of snow, is that a typo?
And, Mount Washington is known for the fastest wind on the planet (231 mph), not the coldest temp

Not a typo. Near the tunnel on the St Marys side of Logan pass, the snow was reported to be 150 feet deep. The cliff face near the tunnel is almost vertical so the snow on the mountain side is also "on" the road.

Day 12 - On Saturday we drove from Christina Lake, BC to Vancouver, BC. On this trip we decided to save touring in Vancouver for another trip. So the stop was just to wait for the ferry to Victoria.

On the way to Vancouver we drove through the City of Osoyoos, an interesting lake town that because it is surrounded by mountains, is technically a desert. With irrigation, the town has become a major producer of fruit and wine. There are a lot of resorts and boating activities. Property values are high for water front areas.

We stopped at a fruit stand that was offering 40 lbs of cherries for $40 (Canadian). I enjoyed looking at all of the "historic" farm equipment:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0153%20tractor%201.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0153%20tractor%201.jpg.html)

Since we didn't need to haul 40 lbs of cherries home, I had the bright idea to ask for a cherry milk shake. I got a weird look from the cashier who had never made a Cherry milkshake before, but she said she would give it a try. After 15 minutes of hand pitting a load of cherries, she spun up a very refreshing milk shake:

Day 13 - On Sunday, July 1, we boarded the BC Ferry at the marine terminal at Tsawwassen. I had reservations for the 9 am ferry to Victoria. We wanted to be at the ferry plenty early so we arrived at the terminal at about 7:30. After paying the fee, the attendant remarked that we could be on standby for the 8 am departure. Well that worked because we were the last car on the ship:

We live in Westminster, Maryland and were pleased to discover that the ferry was named the "Queen of New Westminster".

The ride to Victoria was cool and windy but we braved the storm and spent some time on deck. Lyndi got a picture of this nice lighthouse at Georgina Point, Victoria, BC:

After we arrived in on Vancouver Island, our first stop was in Sydney. We discovered that we had not realized that Canadians make a big celebration for Canada Day, July 1st, their 151 birthday as a nation. The streets were lined for a parade and many people were dressed up for the occasion:

Canadians honor their veterans. We enjoyed sitting with this statue of a veteran soldier:

I'm finding your road trip very entertaining and I love all the pictures!

If you guys are heading up north island, judging from your previous posts you may find the Nanaimo Bastion an interesting stop.

Day 14 - Sight-seeing in Victoria and Vancouver Island. Our first stop for the day was at Butchart Gardens which is about 45 minutes north of Victoria. The gardens were begun 100 years ago by the Butchart Family and is situated on a 55 acre abandoned limestone quarry. Many people recommended visiting the gardens and we agree that is worth the visit.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0085%20Lyndi%20and%20Jim%20Roses%20and%20trell is.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0085%20Lyndi%20and%20Jim%20Roses%20and%20trell is.jpg.html)

The gardens are very impressive, well laid out and visitor friendly.

After seeing the gardens, we drove around the east end of Victoria and enjoyed the view of Oak Harbor and the Victoria Golf Club. Lyndi took a nice picture of the Trial Island Lighthouse:

In the residential portion of Victoria there is a "castle" built by Robert Dunsmuir, a Canadian coal baron, railroad and shipping businessman. Craigdarroch Castle was built in the late 1800's:

As we drove along the coast road we stopped at Clover Point Park to watch a kite flying outing taking advantage of the off-shore wind:

We visited Canada's oldest China Town near the center city:

We returned to our hotel, the Days Inn on the Harbor for some adult beverages and dinner. From the Days Inn we watched the sea planes taking off in the harbor:

Day 15 - We drove from Victoria, BC to Tacoma, WA. After a wonderful time in western Canada, we got up at 4:00 am to be lined up for the ferry to Port Angeles, WA at 5:10 am. After a US Customs check, we boarded the Black Ball Ferry MV Coho.

The harbor was very calm as we headed out:

As we crossed the Straits of Juan de Fuca we saw the Olympic Mountain Range in the distance:

As we entered the harbor at Port Angeles, we spotted a group of seal lions frolicking in the surface:

As we neared the pier, we returned below decks to the car deck:

We drove south from Port Angeles to Tacoma, WA, a pleasant drive through the bays and inlets surrounded by fir forests. In Tacoma, on the coast of the Puget Sound we found a very busy grain elevator tha t was unloading grain cars from trains and loading a grain ship:

We left the Park and drove to a nearby ski resort called Crystal Mountain. We road the Gondola to the peak:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0323%20Gondola%20cars.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0323%20Gondola%20cars.jpg.html)

From the top, we had a good view of Mt Rainier and the Cascade Mountain Range. Unfortunately we had a data card failure and did not get the pictures we took. This is the first time this has happened in 8 years of Road Trips.

We drove south on WA-410 across the mountains and down to the Yakima Valley. The road is in good condition and the scenery was fabulous. We stopped at Whistlin' Jacks Lodge, which was a very rustic lodge that was very nice.

Day 18 - We drove from the Mt Rainier area to Richland, Washington.

The drive southeast from Mt Rainier to Richland was interesting because the change in terrain and land use. We followed the Natchez River through the forested hilly landscape

As we got to the Yakima Valley, the land became flatter and the area is a desert and the only agriculture was in irrigated fields. There are more than 30 wineries in the Richland area:

The reason for our stop in Richland, WA was to visit the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, Hanford Reactor.

The B-Reactor in Hanford, WA is one part of the Manhattan Project. The B-Reactor was designed, built and operated from 1943 to 1968 to manufacture Plutonium. The Plutonium was used to build Atomic Bombs. Most of the buildings and facilities from the Manhattan Project era have been removed. The B-Reactor was saved following a dedicated effort by a non-profit group that worked to preserve the site of a significant accomplishment of Twentieth Century.

The B-Reactor used a massive carbon-pile, uranium-fueled , water-cooled reactor that allowed nuclear fission to convert Uranium 238 to Plutonium 239 which was needed to build one of the atomic bombs that ended the war in the Pacific in 1945.

The B-Reactor enclosure building:

The front Face of the reactor pile:

Part of the control system used to monitor and control the reactor. There were direct reading pressure gauges for each of the ~2000 fuel production tubes:

After visiting the B-Reactor, we drove to the Port of Benton area of Richland to see the Sail of the USS Triton SSN-586 nuclear submarine:

The USS Triton was built in 1956 and had two pressurized water reactors. It made history by circumnavigating the earth submerged:

AGREED!!

And, hats off to the photographer(s). Those are some exquisite images!

Loosing a data card...now THAT is a new one! I have twin cards in my Nikon 610 - one high rez, and one set at lower rez (backup). So far, I've never had a problem with either (crossed fingers!). Bummer!

While at Hanford, did ya get to reconnect for old
times sake with the Ustafish's (SSBN 632?) reactor
compartment (or what's left of it...)?
Probably not on the visitor's tour...

Hi Doug, I was able to verify that all the submarine reactor compartments are stored somewhere on the Hanford site , but no one gets a tour. Also, the spent reactor cores are not stored in Hanford.

Day 19 - We drove from Richland, WA to Baker City, OR. The easy route would have been straight down I-84, BUT, we decided to take the scenic routes through the Wallowa -Whitman National Forest: WA-124 to US-12 (the Lewis and Clark Scenic Trail) to WA-129 to OR-3 to OR-82 (the Hells Canyon Scenic Highway) to I-84.

Heading west out of Richland, we were still surrounded by agriculture:

We stopped in Pomeroy, WA because a good friend of ours back home is Tony Pomeroy and we got a T-Shirt that says "I Love Pomeroy" with a map of Washington. It is a very nice town and we liked the Garfield County Courthouse built in 1901:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0478%20Pomeroy%20Courtouse%20WA.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0478%20Pomeroy%20Courtouse%20WA.jpg.html)

US-12 is the Lewis and Clark Trail. There are numerous historical sites to visit:

This barn we found is a very interesting configuration:

Between Clarkson and Lewistown, we turned south an drove thru the mountains on WA-129 and OR-3. These are Mountain Run caliber roads and loads of fun to drive:

The "d" key on my keyboar is starting to work intermittently making my typing even slower than normal. I am trying to compose sentences that o not contain d's.

We arrived in Baker City, Oregon, where we stayed at one of our favorite hotels, The Geiser Grand Hotel:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0916%20Geiser%20Grand.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0916%20Geiser%20Grand.jpg.html)

The Geiser Grand was built in the 1890's and is a landmark in the area. Like a lot of small cities Baker City was in decay and the Geiser Grand was 30 days from being demolished when it was purchased by a visionary who saw the potential of the building.

The terrain of southeast Oregon is hilly and arid:

I-84 in southern Oregon and Idaho is in good condition and the speed limit is 80 mph most of the way:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0122%20desert%20and%20buttes%20Idaho.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0122%20desert%20and%20buttes%20Idaho.jpg.html)

When we got to Twin Falls, we set out to find the falls. We found the Shoshone Falls east of the city. The area on the west side of the Snake River is owned by the city of Twin Falls. There is a $3.00 per car charge to drive out to the view point, which is well worth the trip:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0226%20Shoshone%20Falls%202.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0226%20Shoshone%20Falls%202.jpg.html)

Shoshone Falls are taller than Niagara Falls. There is a dam above the falls that creates the water level for a power station and the overflow goes over the falls.

Here is a picture of the Snake River Canyon looking west toward the Perrine Bridge and Twin Falls:

Further down the canyon there is the picturesque Twin Falls Country Club at the floor of the canyon:

Day 21 - We drove from Twin Falls to Park City, Utah, southeast of Salt Lake City.

From Twin Falls we drove southeast on I-84. The terrain was very arid and hilly. In many areas there was agriculture using irrigation. Farmers is this area have raised storage of baled hay to a new level:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0014%20storing%20hay.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0014%20storing%20hay.jpg.html)

In this dry region we could always tell where the irrigation trenches were because that is where the trees are:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0090%20trees%20along%20the%20canal.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0090%20trees%20along%20the%20canal.jpg.html)

Here is a sight that raised the pucker factor:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0119%20What%20is%20wrong%20with%20this%20pictu re.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0119%20What%20is%20wrong%20with%20this%20pictu re.jpg.html)

The truck coming at me is actually a new truck being pulled backwards by another new truck.

Arrival in Utah, the thirteenth state/province of our trip:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0140%20Utah%20sign.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0140%20Utah%20sign.jpg.html)

We headed south and then turned west to visit Promontory Point where two railroads met to complete the Trans-continental Railroad.

On the way there we passed a large complex of corporate compounds working on rockets. We stopped at a Rocket Garden built by Northup Grumman:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0201%20Jim%20car%20and%20rocket%20garden%20%20 Northrup%20Grumman%20in%20the%20desert%20of%20Utah .jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0201%20Jim%20car%20and%20rocket%20garden%20%20 Northrup%20Grumman%20in%20the%20desert%20of%20Utah .jpg.html)

One of the rockets on display was the Trident C4 Submarine Launched ICBM that was very special to me. I carried 16 of these missiles on two submarines that I served on. Each missile carried 8 independently targetable nuclear warheads. We were part of the force that won the Cold War.

The device extending from the top of the missile is an aero-spike. Most rockets have a pointed nose but because the 1960's era submarine missile tubes were not tall enough, the aero-spike was designed to deploy after launch and create the aerodynamic shape needed to make a long-range missile.

We were surprised at the size or the Space Shuttle rocket components:

After visiting the transportation devices of the future, we headed west to see the location of one of the greatest American accomplishments of the 19th Century:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0287%20road%20to%20golden%20spike.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0287%20road%20to%20golden%20spike.jpg.html)

We enjoyed posing on the rails at the site of the Golden Spike:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0325%20Golden%20spike%20meeting%20of%20the%20t rains%201869%20Union%20Pacific%20and%20Central%20P acific.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0325%20Golden%20spike%20meeting%20of%20the%20t rains%201869%20Union%20Pacific%20and%20Central%20P acific.jpg.html)

The two locomotives on display are reproductions of the ones that actually met at the site in 1869. Lyndi is standing in front of the Jupiter that belonged to the Central Pacific Railroad:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0356%20gold%20spike%202.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0356%20gold%20spike%202.jpg.html)

In the parking lot we found a 1929 Model A Ford. The couple driving the A are from Oklahoma and have been on the road for 10 days. The Model A had been upgraded with a 12 vdc electrical system, a modern ignition system, an oil filter, air conditioning, and an over-drive transmission.

We headed for Ogden on UT-83 through the Bear River Valley and passed by areas of salt marsh that form the northern end of the Great alt Lake:

North of Ogden there is a large Walmart distribution center and a lot of trucks:

We continued south and got on I-15 south. We saw this nice Corvette on a trailer:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0699%20corvette%20on%20the%20road.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0699%20corvette%20on%20the%20road.jpg.html)

Our next stop was Ogden, Utah, and Union Station. The original Union Station was built in the 1860's to serve as the junction between the Central Pacific Rail Road and the Union Pacific Rail Road. The current station was built in 1924. It was a common practice to name stations that serve as a junction between two railroads "Union Station":

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0737.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0737.jpg.html)

Union Station no longer servers rail traffic. It has been beautifully restored and houses 4 museums. Outside there is a nice display of locomotives and rolling stock:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0726%20car%20and%20Union%20Station%20Train%20C ollection%20Ogden.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0726%20car%20and%20Union%20Station%20Train%20C ollection%20Ogden.jpg.html)

A tank car caught my attention. It was built in 1942 and served the US Army:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0759%20army%20tank%20car.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0759%20army%20tank%20car.jpg.html)

Ogden is a nice city. I am sure we will visit here again. There are a number of wonderfully painted horse statues on the sidewalks. My favorite was this one:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0735%20candy%20horse%202.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0735%20candy%20horse%202.jpg.html)

We got back on I-15 and passed through Salt Lake City. The day had gotten hotter and we saw 105 degrees on the thermometer:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0824%20105%20degrees.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0824%20105%20degrees.jpg.html)

The traffic was heavy and we took the HOV-2 lane. The bonus was we avoided the 25 cent toll:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0821.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0821.jpg.html)

We reached or destination, the Westgate Park City Resort:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0869%20WPC%20view%20from%20room%20pool.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0869%20WPC%20view%20from%20room%20pool.jpg.htm l)

We will be staying here at the resort for 6 days. If the weather gets cooler we will be doing some sightseeing in the Salt Lake City area. If not, we will be at the pool drinking beer.

Day 23 - From Park City we drove to Salt Lake City for some sightseeing. We visited the Union Pacific Railroad Depot in downtown SLC. The depot was first built in 1865 to encourage the Union Pacific railroad to run their track on a route near Ogden (north of SLC). It no longer is used as a train station but was beautifully restored for the 2002 SLC Olympics. There is a nice mall area behind it called the Olympics Legacy Plaza:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0102%20Jim%20at%20Union%20Station%20front%20di stance.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0102%20Jim%20at%20Union%20Station%20front%20di stance.jpg.html)

The Union Pacific station faces South Temple Street which is a route of the Utah Transit Authority. The electric trains that run down town are modern and appear to be well used. Even the pigeons seem to like the stations:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0156%20bronze%20birds%20on%20cable%20car%20sta tion.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0156%20bronze%20birds%20on%20cable%20car%20sta tion.jpg.html)

But on closer look we realized the pigeons are bronze:

We walked up South Temple Street to see the Mormon Temple and Temple Square:

We went to the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. The top floor of the building is open to the public and provides a nice view point for the city:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0278_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0278_1.jpg.html)

Where's Waldo. The first thing I spotted was the Purple ZR-1 in a parking lot five blocks away:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0218%20Purple%20car%20parking%20lot.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0218%20Purple%20car%20parking%20lot.jpg.html)

And we watched the street cars:

If I said that I washed the car each day nobody in WAZOO would believe me. The secret is long focal length and positioning to avoid a close up of the front bumper. Thank you for your nice comments

Day 25 - still in Park City. We went on a white water rafting trip. There only two rafting sites around Salt Lake City and we chose the longer and swifter on but it was not really "white water". I guess it would be rated a weak 2 on a five scale, but since it was a hot day and the water was cool, we had fun. To get to the launch site we drove 24 miles east on I-80 and then 3 miles north on I-84. The rafting was on the Weber River:

We were lucky to get our own raft and guide who's name was Tron:

The original alignment of the Union Pacific railroad follows the Weber River on it approach to Promontory Point. Along the tracks are telegraph poles that were part of the Trans-continental telegraph that connected east and west as much as the railroad did.

In several places the river is crossed by bridges of different heights and construction. This bridge was the lowest and we had to lie down in the raft to get under it:

We drove to Flaming Gorge Recreation Area which is in the Ashley National Forest, partly in Utah and partly in Wyoming.

The gorge was formed when the Green River cut a deep canyon through the limestone layers.

We arrived at the southern area of the gorge and from an over-look got our first view of the gorge:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0016_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/DSC_0016_1.jpg.html)

In the early 1960's the Green River was dammed to create the Flaming Gorge Reservoir as a part of the Colorado River water control system:

We continued on up the hill to one of many other over-looks. The roads are in good condition and were fun to drive:

The best place to stay to see the Flaming Gorge is in the "park" at the Red Canyon Lodge, on the Utah part of the Gorge, on the gorge rim, and about 15 miles west of the Flaming Gorge Dam.

We had a nice diner at the lodge and then went to our cabin on a small lake:

North of Flaming Gorge we stopped in the town of Green River for gas and a rest break. Green River is small town that now is a rest stop on I-80 and a Union Pacific Railroad interchange and maintenance yard.

The freight depot caught my eye and we went over to see the building. We found a cross walk bridge that crossed the tracks and we went up and across to see the locomotives that were parked in a service area:

The Green River yard has a small classification yard:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0571.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/DSC_0571.jpg.html)

There was nothing moving in the yard so we crossed over and looked around the town. On our way back, Lyndi heard a train coming and we saw a freight train enter the yard and stop at the depot:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0654.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/DSC_0654.jpg.html)

It was joined by a second train a few minutes later and then a third train came in to the yard from the west:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0012.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/DSC_0012.jpg.html)

As we entered this storm system, the temperature dropped from 88 degrees to 58 degrees in about 10 minutes:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0014_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/DSC_0014_1.jpg.html)

The storm dumped heavy rain, lightening and limited visibility:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0029.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/DSC_0029.jpg.html)

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/DSC_0048.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/DSC_0048.jpg.html)

We cleared the storm and the clouds over the snow fencing was dramatic:

Day 31 - The Rocky Mountain Run begins...

Three years ago Lyndi and I visited the Royal Gorge and added to our bucket list the goal of driving a ZR-1 across the bridge.

Today we accomplished that goal:

Day 33 - We drove from Black Hawk, CO to Kearney, Nebraska, starting the homeward-bound leg of the trip. We took the scenic root from Black Hawk to get to I-70. We left early and saw the sun rise on the Central City Parkway thru the area around Idaho Springs:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0028.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0028.jpg.html)

We bypassed Denver on I-76 which runs north east up to I-80 in Nebraska. The terrain in western Nebraska was hilly at first but became flatter as we travelled east. There are a lot of farms that look very productive:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0066.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0066.jpg.html)

We stopped in North Platte to sight see. The downtown area is pleasant and not crowded. This former Federal Building was taken over by the city and a public arts commission have converted it to the Prairie Arts Center. It is now a vibrant arts center for the county:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0080_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0080_1.jpg.html)

Across the street from the Arts Center is a nice, large mural:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0238.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0238.jpg.html)

We drove out to the Golden Spike Tower, a wonderful viewing area for the large Bailey Yard of the Union Pacific Rail Road. On the way there we noted that the corn was getting high:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0097.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0097.jpg.html)

The Gold Spike Tower has a comprehensive visitor center that describes all of the activities that are in progress in the very large train yard. The Tower is very good viewing point of the yard with an open viewing deck 7 stories up and an enclosed viewing area with a guide at 8 stories up.

The operations were much busier that the Green River, WY yard we visited a few days ago:

Day 34 - On Sunday we drove from Kearney, NE to Iowa City, Iowa. On the return trip to home, our plan is to drive about 400 to 450 miles per day. This is a slower pace than in the past and we are finding it more relaxing.

Along the way we found a very creative water tower advertising a business:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0101.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0101.jpg.html)

Half way between Kearney and Iowa City is Omaha. We decided to stop at the Omaha Zoo:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0133.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0133.jpg.html)

The Omaha Zoo is a very nice zoo. There is convenient parking and the facilities are in excellent condition. The zoo also contains an aquarium, but we did not visit it. In addition to the animal exhibits, there is a narrow gauge railroad with a restored steam locomotive, a motorized tram to get around the zoo and a chair lift style ride called the Skyfari which we enjoyed a lot.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0247.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0247.jpg.html)

From the over head ride we got some great pictures:

Day 35 - Iowa City to Richmond, Indiana: We drove south east and east across Illinois and Indiana. Our only sight seeing for the day was a stop in Bloomington, IL where I-74 crosses the historic route of US-66.

At a Visitor Information Center, Lyndi found this extra-large chair:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0035%20galesburg%20chair.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0035%20galesburg%20chair.jpg.html)

When we got to Bloomington, we found another bench to sit in, this time with Abraham Lincoln:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0053%20lincoln%20and%20lyndi.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0053%20lincoln%20and%20lyndi.jpg.html)

At the McClean County Museum of History and Route 66 Visitors Center we found a lot of information and helpful advisors that told us about the alignment of Historic US-66 in McClean County and some of the "original" RT-66 businesses:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0057%20rt%2066%20in%20historic%20bldg.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0057%20rt%2066%20in%20historic%20bldg.jpg.html )

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0070%2066%20sign.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/DSC_0070%2066%20sign.jpg.html)

This building is one of the original store, gas station and restaurant businesses from the late 1930's. It was purchased by a history buff who had it restored and is now a museum and gift shop. Unfortunately, it was closed on Mondays.

We drove south of Bloomington to see a truck stop that claims to be the first truck stop in the nation. It has been rebuilt several times:

Always love to see and hear about the many unusual places you and Lyndi visit on your trips. How do you find all of them and work them into your itinerary? Is there a particularly good tool to use to set up a leg of the itinerary and search for points of interest on each leg? AAA? Trip advisor? Google etc --Bob

Day 36 - We drove from Richmond, IN to Westminster, Maryland.

Home. We drove most of the way on I-70, with a short cut down I-79 to Morgantown, WV and across I-68 to get back on I-70.

The trip was 36 days covering 8,379 miles. The Purple Z ran flawlessly and we did not have any route or lodging problems.

We made a few adjustments to our itinerary along the way and it all worked out well.

This is the most days we have been on the road for a trip and it was a lot of fun, but it is also good to be home.

Jim & Lyndi,
A real testament to excellent preparation, planning & execution and proof that the ZR-1 is a viable & reliable Corvette, still after all these years.

Well done,

Hi Bob,

Yes, there are several tools that I use to plan these trips.

I spend lot of time planning a trip. This trip was in planning for almost 15 months. In order to get to stay in the National Park Lodges as we did in Glacier National Park, the reservations have to be made 12 months in advance, so I have to work out the trip dates and NP stays before the reservation deadline.

I use two custom Excel spreadsheets to keep track of the plans and to use while we are traveling. This is the Summary page of the Trip Plan:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Trip%20summary%20sheet.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Trip%20summary%20sheet.jpg.html)

Most of the data on the summary page comes from the Day Sheets:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Day%20Sheet.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2018%2006%20Jun-Jul%20Glacier%20NP%20-%20Victoria%20-%20RMR/Day%20Sheet.jpg.html)

I use the summary sheet to figure out where we will be each day and the mileage and travel time for each day. Then I use the Day Sheet to keep track of the lodging each night and the daily itinerary and attractions along the way.

We choose the Main Event locations (such as Glacier NP and Victoria, BC) and the special locations (such as the visit to Reactor B at Hanford, WA). This creates the overall track and date requirements for the trip.

For the route, I use Google Map. It is the best trip planning tool there is. I sometimes use Trip Advisor to find hotels, but I always make the reservations through the hotel website or central hotel reservation number. It is important to me to get reservations that I can easily cancel, because a lot of changes occur during the planning and during the trip.

I also use Google Map to find hotels, especially on "transit" days where are getting from one place to another for several days.

After the trip sequence and lodging locations are selected, I look at all the cities along the track to find interesting things to do. The Day Sheet with a lot of map links and attractions links, is used to list these so Lyndi can select what we will do each day. She usually does this on an iPad while we are driving when there is cell coverage. She is also good at finding interesting things on the fly such as the rail road observation tower in North Platte, NE.

I also use a Web tool called TripIt to make a quick outline type list of the trip. TripIt has a version for PC and an App version that runs well on an iPad and on a phone. Reservation data is easy to enter into TripIt by forwarding the reservation confirmation email to plans@TripIt.com:

Great Trip Photographs and Descriptions as always....Thank You

What Spare parts if any and specific tools did you take this trip?

Has that changed from last trip and does it change depending on which Z you take?

Thank you again for taking us along with your great Photographs and Descriptions :handshak:

Your Trip Planning is EXCEPTIONAL.

Be Ready for the Road by Jim Voter

I have traveled a lot of miles on road trips and have helped many other ZR-1 owners with repairs at events and in parking lots. Over the years, I have compiled a collection of tools, parts and supplies that I keep in my ZR-1 all the time. In order to carry all this stuff, I remove the "liner" and tire jack (moved to the spare tire) from the storage compartment behind the passenger seat. I have 1994/1995 Z's, the arrangement in the earlier years storage compartment may be different. The only things that I don't carry in the compartment is a 12-volt tire inflator and the jumper cables. When you have a dead battery you cannot open the rear hatch, and with a rear hatch full of luggage, you can not get to the jumper cables. I learned this the hard way in Canada on the way to Alaska.

My theory on the parts I carry is that they can be replaced in a parking lot but may not be available locally without a delay for shipping the part from a remote supplier.

Hey Jim . Also add to your list of tools those small car booster's. It's only like 5"x3"x1" or smaller and has enough juice to jump start a car a few times . They also have usb charges built into them . We got ours at Costco but many places now sell them . Its for those times like you said , when you can't get to the booster cables .

Jim--
Thanks for the detailed reply to my questions about planning your trips. One would almost think that at some point in your life you had planned for some fairly extensive trips with lots of details to them, perhaps underwater....

Your planning tools and approach will be very helpful to me for future road trips so I do thank you for enlightening me. Maybe I'll plan another road trip kicking off after next year's BG gathering. The week long road trip we just undertook was a piece of cake by comparison to yours but it still required planning over a month or so to line up everything following the Corvette gathering in Ontario organized by Bob Lambe. --Enjoy your well earned rest at home!--Bob
