I bought a carfax for my car (#400 1991), but it had no info prior to november 16th 1993. I need to find out when it was first registered in order to determine the taxes. With no date they will use december 31st 1991...which means I might pay more than neccessary. Any good ideas..?

Have you gotten a copy of the original window sticker? It will show the original dealer it was shipped to. And the original tank sticker will show a rough production date. Both available from the NCM if you don't have them. Maybe they will help your search or prompt someone who might know the car from the early days to comment. Surprised the Car Fax does not show delivery date. Maybe a call to CarFax? Good luck with the search. --Bob

If you're 'importing' the car NOW what does anything in '91 or '93 have to do with anything? A 'Bill of Sale' for the amount paid recently I'd certainly think should suffice. You should have had an 'appraisal' done likely before you moved it for establishing value.
Where was it imported from?

Taxes are based on age and registration. The longer ago it was first registered the less I pay. This is on cars newer than 30 years old. All cars gets 25% tax on bill of sale and shipping cost, and cars newer than 30 years also get tax on displacement, emission etc. The newer the higher the taxes are. From USA to Norway.

Age (month/year) should be displayed on the 'Tire Placard' driver door. Your problem with 'older' records using CarFax or any other service is that here in the US not every state participated in NMVTIS (National Motor Vehicle Titling Information Service), until that vehicle was processed by a participant(state) in NMVTIS or a dealer who was an early adopter of CarFax showed a title transfer there won't be a record.

It would not be at all unusual for a ZR-1 to have been sitting on an open MSO for months, even years at a dealer.
If it went from one dealer to another, which often happened with earlier ZR-1's, the MSO can be re-assigned to another dealer, and another, all without ever having the car "titled".
So 1993 might indeed be the year that the car was first "titled/ and registered".
