Thanks for recording this process. Looks like fun and PITA also. The end game is satisfaction and your first road test. Great Jon!

Well done! You made a difficult job look easy.

You have given my limited mechanic skills a false sense of security.

Lol that's my exact intention, hopefully this will give you that bit of confidence needed to push you into attempting it 😁.
It is a pita ..... but doable

Thanks guys, it's not perfect and I'm sure others have tricks on better/easier ways to do it but ....this is how I managed to get through it ( cussing and bad humor) lol

Thanks for taking the time to do that. Any idea of the weight savings?

Yes I actually did weigh them, the stock headers were 21 pounds each and the OBX headers were 9 pounds each

With or without cats?

Nice video Chris! You’re a natural and I enjoyed the entertainment too. Thanks for taking time to share. It’s been 15 years since I did headers on my first Z. Ready to tackle this 95 soon. I’ll be sure to give the heat shields the “finger”.

Those weights were with cat on stock header and without on obx. I didn't use cats

What are pros and cons of not using the cats. I don’t need them for emission/pollution testing as there isn’t any required here in Oz. I am thinking of putting on an OBX system front to rear. I want a better sound but don’t want a horrible drone. Is it possible to have one without the other?
Cheers, Russell

Cats are for emissions only, if you don't have to use them....don't! They hold heat and restrict air flow. Drone levels will depend on set up.

My experience with cats and no cats attached to a Corsa cat-back system (on my two Zr-1s) definitely showed that the sound was lessened and smoothed out by having cats. My informal description was that it quieted the system by about 10% to 20%. Not sure how to really quantify that other than with a decibel meter but I found it to be a more pleasant sound although it was still fairly loud. Stock cats do cost a bit of horsepower but the high performance ones are not too bad on that score. On my '95 I finally went with no cats (Illinois no longer requires emissions testing of the older cars) but I also installed a full stock '95 exhaust system so it was just a little louder than stock when I wanted but I had electric cutouts in front of the rear mufflers for a straight through system when I wanted to set off car alarms and frighten children :dancing. As to drone, cats or no cats should not impact it. The Corsa system was one of the best cat backs to eliminate drone. I don't have first hand experience with the OBX system but it is a copy of the Corsa externally--Bob

And you will get noticeable exhaust smell. The degree of the smell will depend on tuning. I’m running a full OBX system including headers. The sound is nice but louder than I expected. I can’t say it drones but gets close under some circumstances. Exhaust sound and tone is very subjective. I’m adding cats just because of the smell.

Thanks for the feedback. When you say your going to add cats to deal with the smell, what cats will you source for that application?

Living in Australia puts a few restrictions or obstacles in the way of sourcing and trying parts the may or may not work for me. $ exchange rate and shipping costs, taxes, duty etc. what are your thoughts about this. A set of OBX or similar headers, no cats, original pipes and electric cut outs prior to the factory mufflers? Or all of that, but add a pair of locally sourced freer flowing rear mufflers. Just trying to upgrade sound and gain a little performance without too much hassle and expense. By the way I have not researched electric cut out systems. Is there good and bad, ones to stay away from?
Cheers. Russell

I personally don't like cutouts, they break often. It's cheaper, simpler and more practical to just put a set of free flow mufflers on like you mentioned. Removing the factory resonator isn't a bad idea either

I completely agree here it's the smell. You want to use the Random Tech or Magna Flows stainless high flow styles.

I've got SW headers to tips. Running their metal matrix hi flo cats and have no smell and only a very slight loss in hp at the wheels. When I port the top end and retune again, I won't even see the impact of running cats.. slight drone at 1800 under light load. No big deal. Love the exhaust note on the SW system.
