View Full Version : Engine Pull/Install with headers

Getting ready to pull the engine on the 90’. Been reading up on the process and it seems fairly straight forward.
Question is this. The engine has OBX headers which are on the short side. Has anyone pulled/installed the engine with the headers left in place or do they have to come out too? With the OEM exhaust manifolds it’s obvious they have to come off. Just curious about the headers.

Do it all the time.
Be sure to pull the flywheel and remove the AC air box cover.

1. The first two items to be removed before the engine can be lifted (with Headers Installed) are the Wiper Motor and AC Temperature Sensor (Passenger Side Fire Wall). The last items to be installed will be the Wiper Motor and AC Temperature Sensor. The LT5 was lifted with Headers, Injector Housing, Alternator, Pressure Plate, Belt Tensioner, and lower engine Radiator Hose installed.
You cannot use the standard lift eyes (shown in photo) if you want to install the LT5 with headers however (use soft slings around Flywheel and Harmonic Balancer).

As you bring it up and forward you have to tilt the flywheel end down quite a bit so the headers will clear everything as the engine comes out. In Wazoo land we use a single point lifting bracket like you see here on Rich’s engine swop http://www.zr1.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=3954&d=1418668694

Good info, thanks guys.
Phil, what did you make that single point lifting bracket out if? Looks like thick aluminum?

Just to clarify... on the wiper motor. Are we pulling just the cover or the entire motor?

A/C Temp Sensor........................Wiper Motor.........

If you want to lift/install the engine with Headers......it helps to jack up the rear of the ZR-1 (tilt the ZR-1 down in front and up in rear). Whatever angle you can get the Front of the ZR-1 down means less tilting down to the rear of the engine during installation.

Phil or other WAZZO members,
I'm getting close to installing the rebuilt engine with headers into my '91. The single point lifting bar looks to be the way to go. I've blown up the picture and also searched the site for details on the lifting bar. Do you have any pictures of the plates mounted on the IHs and the connection to the lifting bar?

The plates are attached to the cylinder head at the water ports.

Also, the holes in the plates are elongated to allow the 1/2” bolts to rock vertical to connect to the crossbar. The underside of the bolt heads are also rounded a bit to helpout with this. Be sure to run the three 8mm bolts down tight that attach the plates to the cylinder head.

Engine is out, project is moving forward nicely. Here’s the lifting hardware I fabricated to distribute the weight. Worked like a charm. Engine was out in 20min.

Hans,
Your lifting solution is another gem for maintaining and modifying the LT5. This community is great.

I plan to at least check the pin locations. Not sure I’m ready to tackle exact cam timing without adult supervision.

Hans,
Did the cams for the first time last year using the updated instructions from Marc posted on his business site. Takes time but once one cam done, others follow quickly.

What would be helpful is if there was a video of this process. Haven’t found one yet.

If you do decide to time the cams, by any method, you must replace the cam sprocket bolts. Quite a few engines have had major damage due to broken, OEM bolts which are torque to yield, one use only.

Thanks Jerry, yes already on my list to buy from you. I’m putting my list together for gaskets, seals and other things I will be needing. I’ll be placing the order once I know all that I need.

Yes, what Jerry said. I used the old bolts while timing the cams. Once the timing was set, installed the new bolts.
