Was going to change the tranny fluid, but not happy with the way the drain plug is not coming out. I want a new one in hand before I ruin the old one.
Where does one get these?

Kurt White is selling them on Ebay. Not hearing great things lately. Plus, $39 for the plug and $15 for shipping.

Your local VW dealer or perhaps Pelican. If ordered from a local VW dealer make sure they don't substitute a later that is 'spline drive' of sorts. They use both.

Heat it some with a propane torch. I bought the Allen wrench at napa. Then cut a piece off the wrench to slide into a short socket just the right depth to fit that shallow plug. This way it did not go sideways on me. The heat does the trick. First time they had been removed since built 27 years ago.

I also grind the end of the tool hex nearly flat (grind away the chamfer) to engage all the depth of the plug. Mine came with quite a bit of chamfer. Helps to keep the tool straight in the plug.

Yep I did the same thing. Full engagement

Jerry, I checked your web site and didn't see any. Do you carry these?

When you go back in, you might consider using ARP thread sealer. Works beautifully. Never have to worry about it sticking again. Using it on all plugs in my cars.

Yes. Thanks for that.

And, I've used Teflon plumbers tape - that and some Never-Seize (the latter on any plugs that must be removed periodically).

Grinding off the chamfer...good one!

When it comes time to remove it, yes I will grind off the chamfer. Lube? Seems it is covered in lube, aka gear oil.

I'm a fan of Teflon in the thread sealer. Have had binding with simply oil based stuff after enough time.. I really like the ARP sealer. Best and easiest I've ever used. These guys are in the bolt business, so I am confident they they know their stuff.

Before you pull the drain plug and drain the oil,
MAKE SURE you can get the fill plug out...

If you can wait a few days, I've got an extra
17mm drain plug socket, you can have. It's left
over from my VW days.
Call me.

Not normally. We have on occasion when they were in a big lot of parts, but we have never tried to source them as they seem to be available.

Thanks for asking..

So, I went to VW, without a part number. Ask the counter guy for a drain plug for a ZF tranny. The guy asks what it is for. I tell him my Vette. He look at me and says "your at VW". I kinda explain, gets me nowhere.
I go down to Chevy, had already checked on line and know they no longer support it. Guess what they tell me. We no longer support that.
I had called Doug to check the forum for a VW part number. He tells me 100-937.
Back to VW. Different parts guy, I give him the part number, he says "that's the wrong number, it's a 001-937, drain plug for an old ZR tranny". Where was this guy the first time I walked in??
So, I took 1 and ordered 3 others.
Now I just need to get the old one out.
Thanks everyone for the help and advice.

In addition to all of the others: I've had success using aluminum foil between tool & plug if plug is/was 'boogered' up. I'll take a very large crescent adjustable wrench (harbor freight) and position it on bit right at plug.

I doubt you can blame the VW counter guy! You certainly could have taken either the part# or the image with you.

Steve, If all else fails I used a small pipe wrench(new) with sharp teeth and it grabbed the plug and turned it.

Got it. Heat on the case, floor jack under the socket to hold it tight in place.

Holy cow that thing was seriously locked up! :( Glad you got it out.. Certainly recommend teflon sealer when you reinstall it..;)

I taped it with Teflon. The floor jack worked great, I just put a little pressure on the bottom of the ratchet to hold the socket tightly in place. Installed my new VW plug, waiting for more so I can also replace the fill plug (which I've already broken loose).

Picked up three more plugs today.
The part number from VW is WHT 001-937
If anybody is in need, I have two extras.
