How much does it cost to have the rear gears swapped?

Tom’s is a good example of what we need to be focused on, the network of supporting vendors for our cars. Not to be maudlin, but everyone is mortal.

Just Differentials is another source I’ve had good experiences with.

I would prefer more power over 4.10's :-D
Had 4.10's felt like all i was doing is shifting.
4.10's are fun for burn outs ;)

I would think the only time 4.10's are different is first gear. Other than that, if you want a lower gear, down shift. Does it really matter at what point in the drive train you change the ration between the flywheel and the tires?

I had 3.73's in my old ZR-1 and they were awesome IMO. Never drove a stock ZR-1 though.

Pete... I thought I was alone in my opinion re 410s! Ami's car, as you know, has them, and I get to go back and forth between her car and mine with the stock 345s. Yes, I love the torque, but when driving it I'm reminded of the feel of a pushrod motor: seems (in comparison) almost "peaky" to me.
Today, I'm leaning toward keeping the 345s and more HP. (How's the 390 coming?)

If I ever bought another Z, I wouldn't change the gears again. One of my favorite things about the car when it was stock was running at full throttle through 2nd gear to the redline; that was permagrin at its best. Switching to 4.10 gears seemed to shorten that sensation, which was a little disappointing. I enjoyed the switch overall, but definitely not enough to do it again.

Rippie spec'd the 3.73's for my car.
I have found them to be all around great.

With all this talk of gear swapping, and the possibility of going to 3:73 instead of 4:10.
I have a very lightly used Dana 3:73 gear set, with the correct, [almost impossible to find] speedo. correction gear for sale. $400.00 plus shipping. Jim.

several years ago I asked one of the ZR-1 crew here what made more sense..
I was considering porting the plenum and IH, which would lead to tuning etc or just do a 4.10
I did the 4.10 and have been happy with it, now I will say my motor is stock and I still run a stock DMF. but very happy with the combination

Agree--I love the cigar. Racing (either drags or top speed) has been a very small part of my enjoyable 20 years in the ZR-1 world. I put 4.10s in the '93 when I first got it and in the '95 when I got that as well. I was very happy with the resultant increase in driveability via the roughly 18% torque multiplication improvement that 4.10s offer. While it is nice in 1st gear, I found the improvement in 2nd and 3rd and even 6th was great as well. I also added horsepower, to about 450 in the '93 and Marc Haibeck's 510 package in the '95. I thought the 4.10s went fine with the increased power. I think Marc installs mostly 4.10s, but also the occasional 3.73s. You might call him to get his thoughts on it. --Bob

Any thoughts of using taller wheels and tires, ie C6Z, should be accompanied by installation of 4.10’s. That gets u back into the same ballpark as the stock 3.45s
w 17” wheels. 4.56s can even be a consideration. With the 4.10s, I’m turning about 1900rpm at ~ 80mph cruise.

Paul, yes it does feel "peaky" as you say.
The only thing 4:10's did was 60FT but lost it with extra gear shift.:(
Plus i like to run to 160MPH in forth gear :)
391ci will be going together next week i'm excited :dancing, i will take pictures.
Maybe article for our mag.

Yes, that’s the Grump back in the day, getting it done the old-school way with the hammer down rowing through his 4 speed M22 with full authority.

I like the chicken wing action before the 2-3 shift. Then he puffs the cigar when he hits the traps. Classic.

Just to throw it out there I went with the 3:73 on my 500hp car and it fits my driving style perfect, no racing just street driving. I had 4:11 on the 90 I used to have just not my style.

Wasn’t the Lingenfelter recommendation 3.90s?

An article would be great! If I can help in any way with that, let me know!
Ya got me excited too!
Try Randy's World Wide...used to be Randy's Ring and Pinion.
I like my 4.10 with the light weight flywheel. Around the Atlanta area its all about street light to street light racing. Who ever gets to the next light first wins. Of course more HP is always welcome. ;)
