Any down side to drilling and plugging the rear diff for fluid changes?
Anybody crack one?? Oh the horror.

I used the drill and tap kit from Corvette Central, worked great, no issues.

Thank You Rich

It is worthwhile to do if for no other reason you get a complete drain of the original Differential Fluid

I wonder why it didn't come with a drain.

I added one via the kit a while back. I don't remember it being easy, but certainly not a big job.

The "official" kit comes with a template to help you drill in the right location.

This location of the drain plug is at the Lowest point inside the Differential

I think I have some around here. If not, I probably have a regular SS one's at work

FWIW, I put a wrap of Teflon plumbers tape on the plug to keep it from seizing.

Severe duty, every 50,000. How often so you guys change it?

Severe duty, every 50,000. How often so you guys change it?Not often, but it was a little peace of mind to drain it and put in new, known fluid.

When I owned my 95, right after I first met Marc H., he told me about drilling the back of the drive axle housing for a drain plug. I think the exact measurements for the positioning of the hole are on his web site.

Never worried about chips because they all came out with the old lube.

In that car, like all my other drive axles, I used Red Line Heavy Shockproof Gear Lubricant.

I'd change it ever 36,000-40,000 miles or every 3-4 years.

Filled it with Amsoil 75W-90 with a little friction modifier. Pretty pleased with the results.

I am changing my fluids in the next few days. Might as well do the diff. drain while I am there.
Does anyone have the exact placement of the plug in the housing? I have the drill & tap so don't really need to order the kit. Also, checked Marc's site, but was unable to find the info if it is there.
Thanks in advance.

Cruz up this thread, there are some pretty good pictures of the inside of the diff. I used them for reference before I drilled.
