Not sure I would include Corvette Mike in Anaheim, CA. although in a pinch they would do, unless someone has better info.

I know the owner, Robbie Hooper, quite well. He serviced my Z starting around 1992 until I left Florida in 2001. I don't know how extensive work Robbie has done on LT5s but knowing his tremendous knowledge in all automotive stuff, I am sure he can tackle any work even for LT5s.
Even nowadays, I call Robbie at times to ask for his opinion on diagnosing.

Robbie’s Corvette Masters is located next to Rogers Corvettes. Rogers is a Chevrolet dealer that only sells low mileage and excellent condition Vettes of almost any year. He has sold to me and many other ZR-1 owners. He recommended Robbie for mechanical work.

Precision Motive in Hayward Ca has worked on ZR-1s in the past but don’t know how extensive the Z knowledge is at that shop. I do know they put the automatic in the Steel Blue 91 with the Shinoda body kit floating around and worked out all the bugs, not sure who did the plumbing for the nitrous setup. The owner of the shop Pat Hendrix is a great guy to deal with and he’s had this shop for years.

Possibly the better solution is to list two categories. Vetted known level one “Master Shops” and level two “Basic Competency” Shops. Based on member feed back we can move shops between the two or out altogether.

We have worked on several Zr1's over the years:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/922/I8BkMm.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pmI8BkMmj)
We work on all year Corvette's. Our specialty is C5, C6, C7's but we have more than a lifetime of experience on the C2's, C3's and C4's.
We do anything from General Services (brakes, etc...), Diagnostics (headlights, electrical, etc...) to full race builds (we have an in House 902s Engine Dyno and are a full automotive racing machine shop).
We are located in Harbor City (near Torrance/Palos Verdes/Long Beach/Pedro).

Thanks Cliff. I am familiar with them, they are a relatively new (10 yrs or so) but highly respected corvette shop in SoCal. I was not sure of their ZR-1 capabilities. As we all know willingness to work on a Z and higher level LT5 work are two very different things. This may be another good example for a two tier list. I will update the listing accordingly later today.

This just posted over on CF regarding the presale inspection on the low mile 90’ for sale in SOCAL. A good example why these shops need to be vetted.
H
“My experience with Corvette Mike was terrible..I went to them as I wanted to have the best shop work and document on my low mile (17,000) ZR! car I purchased. They misquoted, charged extra, when the work was done and I picked it up, only to find out they didn't test drive it . it didn't run any better...THEY DIDN'T EVEN TEST DRIVE IT AFTER PLENUM/INJECTOR SERVICE..... they apologized and wanted me to give them a chance to correct the problem. I did.....They told me it was a bad TPS, (TPS was replaced with new delco by me) only to find out that the TPS connector was them problem ..This was a 1600++ repair for injector and plenum removal and they didn't test drive it..(I know, hard to believe)......The worst part was when service manager (carl) tried to tell me he he spent 4 hours diagnosis and it should cost an extra 4-500 dollars.....Since then I have found many people have had issues with
Corvette MIke...I would not recommend this business as they have no accountability”

Sounds like they screwed up, but not sure that you want to test drive your Z! I always pop the hood and do a visual inspection and then tell them you’ll be right back. U road test it and either give them a thumbs up or get into to them to fix it right!
BTW-tell them there are no greasy finger prints on the engine and you don’t want to see them when you pick up the car!

I’ll ask again, Does anyone have a status on the following shops? All of these were once top notch LT5 Shops.
South Georgia Corvettes, Thomasville, GA.
Doug Rippie, Waverly, MN.
Lingenfelter Performance, Decatur, Indiana.
For tier two, any new info on Vette Doctors in NY or Tony’s Corvettes on MD?
Based on some internet searches...
South Georgia Corvettes, Appears to be out of business.
Doug Rippie, Still shows an LT5 package but no maintenance or repair.
Lingenfelter Performance, no reference to anything C4 let alone LT5.
Vette Doctors, Shows an LT5 package, possible maintenance and repair. Is known to work on Z’s.
Tony’s Corvettes, no specific LT5 reference. Is known to work on Z’s.

Have to ask......how do you become LT5 Certified? :p
Seems it is based on the personal opinion of others who are not LT5 Certified ;)
Or it is based on the percentage of times you guess exactly what is wrong with an LT5 in the first step of a diagnostic process based on the insufficient information provided by an Uncertified LT5 operator :)
Having said that......a group of guys not LT5 certified may as a group be LT5 Certified and that is why I have suggested Jim and the WAZOO guys on a Sat are LT5 Certified (I have never heard of a complaint) :sign10:

My understanding was back in the day Chevy dealers who were lucky enough to receive a ZR-1 had to send at least one mechanic for special training to be LT5 certified. Not every Chevy dealer had one on staff. I do not know where the training was held. I would assume most of them are now retired.

There certainly was a GM LT5 training class with an extensive curriculum. I too recall dealerships had to have trained technicians to sell ZR-1s. Not sure if it was called a certification. Weren’t there even little trophies technicians got for completion?
Probably long since discontinued by GM.

The WAZOO LT5 certifying process straight forward and starts with a critical evaluation of a candidate’s skills on the BBQ grille. Next up is stocking and maintaining the beer cooler. 21st and final step is cam timing while blindfolded with one arm tied behind the back.

The WAZOO LT5 certifying process straight forward and starts with a critical evaluation of a candidate’s skills Painting the BBQ with Silver or Black BBQ High Temp Rust Oleum for practice before Painting the LT5 Top End Silver Rustoleum High Temp . Next up is stocking and maintaining the beer cooler (The one with door opening cams and grease fittings). 21st and final step is cam timing while blindfolded with one arm tied behind the back while trying to read directions as this should be memorized with no reading directions necessary....now take off the blindfold and untie your arm and just do it.

I think it's been over ten years ago or so, but I worked on a project that included preparing a list of "ZR-1 shops." My research was based pretty much solely on the inputs from members of this forum as well as those from Corvette Forum and possibly whatever else I was able to find on the web. There was no confirmation done on the validity of the recommendations and this is over ten years old so it's possible some of these shops no longer exist, but here is the list (take it for what it's worth -- this is not a personal recommendation from me as I have only personal experience with one shiop on this list -- ZR51/Bill Boudreau, who I would highly recommend):

I had lunch with Aaron Scott from South Georgia Corvettes a week ago and I am happy to announce that South Georgia Corvettes is open and back in business. After a brief closing for personal reasons Aaron assured me that he was back and eager to provide whatever services is needed to the Corvette community. He will be updating his website shortly and his contact number ls 1-229-403-7009. He is at his original location in Thomasville Georgia. I do believe this is good news for the Vette community in and around the southern United States.

I second the opinion that Aaron Scott is a first class Corvette (LT5) mechanic.
And a good guy too. I was on my way to BG for the "Gathering", one time way back in the last century. I had a failure in the ZF6, (long story), and limped in to Aaron's shop. Within a couple of hours he popped in a spare ZF6 that he had in the shop, and shipped my trans out for a rebuild. I got to Bowling Green on time, and then home with no problem. He let me use the trans until mine came back. Great guy.
A word of warning for any shop listed here though. Many of these places have had "up and down" reputations over the years. Because of staff changes, and because of the fact that the LT5 is, in many ways an "orphan engine", not the "latest and greatest" anymore, But mainly because their reputation depends on the personal integrity of one individual, and that can vary over the years for multiple reasons. One of the shops listed, rated at the very highest level by many , gave me the most horrendous service ever. But they have obviously cleaned up their act since, and I don't think it's fair to criticize after a long time period. When in doubt, ask for current opinion from the guys on this list.
BTW, one more shop to mention, in Florida, "Eismann's Corvette Center" here in Jupiter. They've been building, restoring, and servicing Corvettes for more than forty years. I don't go there regularly any more because of high labor costs, but they do know their Corvettes, and LT5's, since day one.

That's awesome . Thankyou . Dave is an amazingly nice guy . Fun thing about Dave is that he and his son do tractor pulls as a hobby . These tractors are lawn tractors lol and we plan to attend one of these events . Can you imagine a lawn tractor pushing close to 80 or more hp lol . Some run nitrous . From the factory they were 25hp at the most .
Hopefully nothing serious goes wrong with our Z but we have Dave close by if needed.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting the list. Didn't know there was a LT5 shop out by Poulsbo, WA on the tier 1 list no less.
I visited Tony's Corvette last summer while getting another vehicle worked on down the street. He seemed a little hesitant to do anything other than basic bolt-ons. He even had a 91 ZR-1 sitting out that needed a good home. He seems to be more invested with newer Vettes and restoring the classic Gen 1 and 2s.
My experience with Corvette Mike wasn't great either, but just some email communication. I was looking for a Mosler MT900, ended up contacting Warren Mosler directly.
I'm looking forward to GM coming out with the DOHC turbo engines for the upcoming Corvettes and Cadillac's. That may increase the shops that will work on our older DOHC LT5 motors.

The WAZOO LT5 certifying process straight forward and starts with a critical evaluation of a candidate’s skills on the BBQ grille. Next up is stocking and maintaining the beer cooler. 21st and final step is cam timing while blindfolded with one arm tied behind the back.
Sent from my iPhone using ZR-1 Net Registry (http://r.tapatalk.com/byo?rid=90383)
Although very humble the Wazoo guys have built several engines, pulls and installs included, numerous injector plenum pulls, clutches trannys, and just about anything you can think of taking apart with few exceptions.
I'd wager that even with a break for a brew or two and pizza many hands make light work and the price of admission is a smile, a handshake, and a desired to get your hands dirty. Highly recommend it.
A Wazoo graduate is Demps who went "all in" and has one of the nicest shop in the areas. Phil is one of the most advanced engineers I know and has invested much of his time into preserving and improving his Z which is quite spectacular.
I hope to sneak a few more ponies out of the LSV. I heat cycled it a few too many times and blew a rad hose and soon after a head gasket. Should have parked it but it got hot a few times about a year ago. Fast forward, it shot some water out the $6 so it was time to tear it down. Mostly from what I learned hands on at wazoo I went solo on the engine pull and took the engine straight to Demps. We also work with Lloyd who does some quality machine work and knows his way around liners and honing and does lots of dohc ford work so he's not afraid of a few extra valves.
As to the post above. I believe Aaron Scott is back in business in Ga.
Although I haven't been up there in a while
Vette Doctors mostly doing late model stuff but know there way around an LT5
Ron has some builders in Las Vegas, of course Jerry's Gaskets in Ok City, and there are many more.

Ran it hard for 45 minutes never over 5/8 on the heat gauge. Car was done on time as promised. His shop is neat and beautiful. Shared the pictures with me on the record setting run of 24 hours with Tommy Morrison. He will be doing some complete builds for me very soon. Knows everying there is to know about the ZR1 as he was there at the start. If your with in a days travel bring your car to him if you want it done right. I have always resorted to Hendrick Chevrolet in Cary. They have a few older mechanics that are good. I usually, let them diagnose the problem (if it isn’t obvious to me) and then hunt down the part on the Internet. They’ve installed my water pump and alternator I bought.
If it is running OK, bring it to Aaron Scott at South Georgia Corvettes. About 5 hours from here. Stay in the left lanes in SC, because 95 is terrible in that State!

Henderson is right down the road in New Braunfels but if I had a shop an Uber ride away from me it would help me feel more confident in my decision to buy a Z :)

Having Corey in New Braunfels and Steve (Crossed Flags) in Magnolia is about as good as it gets. Steve has an enclosed trailer and can do pickup/delivery (for a charge of course), but is well worth it to not have to deal with it. C4 ZR-1s are fairly reliable once they are in a good state and as long as you exercise them regularly. I can definitely attest that Steve @ Crossed Flags does great, thorough work and would take care of you.

Graham Behan should have his own special status above all the rest. His depth of knowledge with the LT5 is far beyond anyone else. From being involved with design to modification I can not think of anyone who comes near his depth of understanding and attention to detail. I am sure many shops here have called him for information.
That is where my car is and I know I have nothing to worry about. He even Repaired pieces from another shops work. Found all the missing parts I did not get.fixed damaged electrical fx3 and the like.

South Georgia Corvette, Aaron Scott owner. Arron worked on my car just before the C4 Gathering this year. New injectors, hot chip, all fluids changed and a general check over so I could enjoy the trip. This shop is a Tier 1 shop plus. Aaron is on of a few shops that fabricated a twin turbo LT5. He knows the LT5 inside and out. On numerous occasions GM top brass has not only inspected his shop. Seen all his cars but drove the twin turbo. If you just need maintenance or a high performance ZR1 save yourself a lot of aggravation and talk to Aaron.
To top it all Aaron is a really nice guy.

Aaron Scott is a first class ZR-1 tech, and a great guy.
Top this- On a trip from South Fla. To the Gathering in BG, I had problems with my ZF6 trans. I limped into his shop in S. Georgia thinking I would never make the Gathering. He dropped what he was doing and pulled the trans., shipped it to Bill B. for a rebuild, LENT me a ZF6 he had on the shelf, and got me back on the road again. I got to BG and then home with no problems.
When my trans got back I went up to his shop and he re-installed it. No charge, except for the time to do the trans swaps.
If only I lived closer to South Georgia, no one would touch my car except Aaron Scott.

Good post letting ZR-1 owners where to locate shops that work on the LT5's. I have been to Haibeck in Addison Illinois, and he certainly knows the ZR-1 inside and out. I wasn't aware of the shop in Port Perry Ontario, thanks for the info. May possibly selling and purchasing a 2020 Corvette. Last car for me might as well go all the way. Happy motoring all.

Innovation Performance in Pinehurst/Aberdeen NC. Not LT5 but anything else automotive and they know Corvettes well. Ask for Jon or Crimson. They also know everyone in the business in NC and will point you in the right direction if they can't help.

Looking for someone near Nashville TN. I tried Freedom Cars and number is not in service. I just need some "minor" repairs, mostly help with oil leaks and some general maintenance.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks!
Moving to the area soon and can maybe help. I have a lift and do my own work.

Updated...
Vette Doctors does work on Our cars, bring my Z there whenever it needs work.
Excellent work

Looking for someone in my area that is willing to work on ZR1. I am located on Long Island and currently use Vette Doctors, his work is fine but the wait time is crazy. Looking for an alternative local tech who understands these cars.

SoCal
Pfaff Engineering
Location: Huntington Beach
Notes: Does not work on stock ZR-1s. Can assist with modding and increasing the HP only.
JD Corvette
Location: Bellflower
Notes: They are dedicated to solely working on Corvettes. Claim they have worked on about 8-10 C4 ZR-1s in the last couple of years.
Powerhouse Racing (specifically Edwin)
Location: Lancaster (but does house calls in LA and OC)
Notes: Seems like a nice guy, don't know a lot about him other than what the forums mention.

I also have to give kudos and praise to Aaron Scott at South Georgia Corvettes in Thomasville GA. I had my car there for a few days for various things and when I drove home it was a completely different and much improved car. He is very gracious and a genuinely nice guy and is very knowledgeable about the ZR-1-1 and LT5 as well as every other Corvette, and even Vipers if you're into those. He can do any routine servicing and repairs as well as any performance mods you want without hesitation, having built many high performance engines that would blow your mind. A highly recommended shop and I will be back when needed and might even just go back to visit and say hello. It's understandable why people come from so far away for him to work on their cars.

I called Steve Schroder at Crossed Flags a few weeks ago to see about having some work done and it appears he is moving.

unfortunately folks are moving on and working on the new vettes to pay the bills. Unless super urgent I'd wait!! I bought my car from Larry Merow rest his soul and vette dr took very good care of the LSV while up in Long Island
Call Ramp chevy where vt dr came from and Carmen from Vet Dr and I'm sure if they can't take care of it they would refer you.
I'm in alex va, what do you need done???

I called Steve Schroder at Crossed Flags a few weeks ago to see about having some work done and it appears he is moving.David is correct. I just completed my last project here in Texas. My wife and I are headed to Pagosa Springs, CO. We are building there on some property we own. Will take some time to effect the move, but I need to get our house ready to list so my time is consumed.
Pagosa Springs is not a reasonable location for a performance shop, so my role going forward would be consultative.
I've had the great pleasure and blessing to work on many C4'S over the past 4 years, developing lifelong friendships with many owners. They are truly unique and very few shops out there will try to learn how to tune and maintain them. I absolutely love the "real" LT-5! My '91 will forever remain with me until I give it to my son someday.
Last C4 project involved complete LT-1 rebuild after it spun #6 rod bearing.. the former "builder" put a stock flexplate (externally balanced) on an internally balanced rotating assembly! Balance was off by 84 grams! Finding competent shops to work on the Gen2 SBC family and our LT-5 is getting very scarce..
Thanks and Warmest Regards,
Steve Schroder

IMHO
Graham Behan should have his own special status above all the rest. His depth of knowledge with the LT5 is far beyond anyone else. From being involved with design to modification I can not think of anyone who comes near his depth of understanding and attention to detail. I am sure many shops here have called him for information.
That is where my car is and I know I have nothing to worry about. He even Repaired pieces from another shops work. Found all the missing parts I did not get.fixed damaged electrical fx3 and the like.
He is the guy. He is worth the drive.
Robin
Amen~! some of my best times were hanging with Graham after John passed. Graham has forgotten more than we'll ever know and has built the lt5 in the most amazing configurations. Riding around with Will in his TT 385 ruined me. Graham, now that you aren't with LPE, can you do more TT LT5s??? I've punched up the LS engines but they just don't have the moxy and sex appeal of the lt5
I can see graham mastering the lt6 as he's an engineer ameritus and can figure it out and make it better, regardless of what it is.
Graham, hope to see you again soon, the LSV needs love.

Hi Ron, long time. Thought you just had the LSV re done?
No limits on TT cars, just time.

LSV still isn't done. Damn shame too as I miss driving it.
another GB TT is just what the Dr ordered!!!
I'm working on 3 vettes right now and none of em run. At least they will all be fast when done!
just picked up a honey of a c5 with a built lsa engine with hard core callies internals (416) Upgrading that one to a D1X procharger
the LSV, engine is together but the top end needs refinishing
TTiX TT c5 Z06, getting new engine and clean up.
Again having a bit of ZR-1 DTs as it's been a while.

For those in NJ you need to add Conte's Corvettes in Vineland, NJ
In MD, Gallant's Automotive in Bel Air, MD. The owner Rob Metzger was a ZR-1 certified mechanic back in the day. He now owns his own GM and Corvette Performance Center

I made my purchase a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised (and lucky) to find Evolution Motorsports in Fredericksburg VA 3 miles from me.
Dempsy knows his stuff, my purchase was pretty squared away already, but he has tightened it up to perfect. Glad to have them close.
