Mr. Dynamite. Jerrys link submitted is for a crank sensor. Jerry has no listing for cam sensors. Any other suppliers anyone can share?

Some potential after-market other than the NAPA selection BUT only for the later 10137658 which is also the NAPA interchange.

WELLS - SU1101

SMP - PC110

AIRTEX - 5S1254

AUTOPART INTERNATIONAL - 1802-302169 (couldn't confirm with an image)

When the GM 10137658 was used to replace the 10096172 there were GM notes that mentioned a different shield GM 10199080 likely required.

10096172 seems to have been used '90 & '91 with the 10137658 potentially in later '92+ builds.

If your '90 is apart it might be interesting to compare the shield differences with snapshots.

I have an AIRTEX in my car, think it was $200. As stated the original shield won’t work with this part.

Gentlemen, I am desperate to purchase a camshaft positioning sensor. A month ago napa had five within the country, now they have none. I have used all of the part numbers I have called manufacturers I have spent hours on the Internet and I have come up blank. I waited until I got my bonus last Friday and that was too long. My car backfired coughed stumbled and died in traffic Saturday evening. Started right up after I stopped though. Code 31 once again. Desperate in Florida.

I hesitate to say it but White Racing Products in FL. shows one in stock. $296.00

These guys are a craps shoot

The next site has a listing of dealers that supposedly have them in stock. Good luck!

FWIW: Have your injectors been replaced?
Code 31 was just one of the spurious codes that
showed up when my injectors crapped out...

Wonder if there is an alternative sensor out there that could be adapted to work in place of the original OEM cam sensor?

Young1
12-18-2017, 07:20 PM
That is great Ccmano. I shall start calling those contacts.
My injectors have been replaced.
What is the deal with the shield? Does the 90,91 shield work with modification? Do I have to locate and purchase the 10199080 shield?
Thanks for the info. I was beginning to lose hope. The Beast shall LIVE!

I may have found a suitable alternative cam sensor.
Anyone know the PN for the Weather Pack connector on the end of the OEM cam sensor pigtail and where to get it?

Young1
12-19-2017, 05:28 PM
Ccmano. All the GM parts outlets do not have the sensor. One is not available anywhere in the 50 states. I am not comfortable dealing with White Racing due to reviews. Jagdpanzer I am willing to cut off the GM connector and splice it on to an alternative sensor. Share your thoughts. Yet desperate in Florida.

You shouldn't have to cut anything. I've no problem with the mating connector on the "harness side" I'm just compiling the information for what is on the "pigtail" so it could be fabricated.

It's NOT Weather-Pack - that would be to simple! LOL

Phil do you have one on the bench?

OP - how about you?

I can have it removed and on the bench by the top of the hour. Heading home now.

Pretty much all of the OEM terminals and connectors can be found at TERMINAL SUPPLY or MOUSER. I have a lot of the OEM connectors in a kit I’ve put it together,if somebody wants to post a picture of what your looking for I can confirm this.

Until Phil has the sensor and confirms the configuration of the sensor to the cavity the connector is of little concern. I've ID'd the connector shell and supplied Phil with all of the tools needed to evaluate components and eliminate guessing. The terminals and seals need to be selective based upon the wire gauge of the sensor he's considered.

I'd say the project is 'under control'!

Jeff - your sources are valid for parts. I used another but I was buying in bulk when I was purchasing.

Is this the connector we are looking for?
If the sensor is correct minus the connector, re-pinning should be relatively easy.

Hello Yun - good find. Interesting but it's a long way around to get to where you want to be. You also have to question the Dorman assembly. Some of these after-market connectors while they "mate" correctly they're assembled with completely different terminal retention etc. They won't always 're-pin'.

For that price a person could buy enough components to build maybe 4 of the correct harness connectors. Right now like I mentioned Phil should have information and until the sensor compatibility to the cavity is confirmed there's no rush to the connector.

Actually if a person such as Young1 had a known good connector on a defective sensor he would only need the sensor, transfer his conduit, buy 3 terminals and 3 seals for the terminals assemble and be done.

Hey, Dave! Hope all is excellent with you.
I have been busy tracking down correct GM connectors since I have been having a lot of "oh-s**t" moments breaking OEM connectors while disconnecting them. Price you pay for holding onto 23 plus year old car... AC Delco use to have an excellent webpage where you can list AC Delco connectors by male/female and number of prongs. For some reason, I cannot find this web page. Could it be that GM really wants us to walk away from 20 plus year old cars and buy new?

The alternative cam position sensor arrived today. Had to make some modification to it so it would fit in cylinder head in place of the OEM stock sensor. Here it is beneath the OEM sensor:
http://i540.photobucket.com/albums/gg333/pwasinger/IMG_1007_zpshztlzstc.jpg

Fit was identical to the OEM sensor.

http://i540.photobucket.com/albums/gg333/pwasinger/IMG_1002_zpsum4ev0ck.jpg

Same 1mm camshaft reluctor wheel clearance as with the OEM sensor.

http://i540.photobucket.com/albums/gg333/pwasinger/IMG_0999_zpssw4pboyo.jpg

Did some bench testing by installing in a head and turning the cam by hand and it generated the same signal output as the OEM sensor.

Installed the alternative camshaft position sensor on my 94 Z this afternoon and it performed perfectly during garage running tests. Even disconnected the signal wire which immediately triggered code 31 cam sensor failure. Reconnected and all was fine again. Rainy weather here prevented a more thorough road test however, from what I've seen thus far I'm confident it will perform just as well as the OEM sensor.

It’s an generic aftermarket piece I found with a form close enough for replacing the OEM sensor.
Modifications:
• Machined spacer ring for adapting the sensor to the cylinder head mounting bore location.
• Correct size O-ring
• Machining O-ring groove
• Fabing up cable plug end
• Installing split wiring conduit

I just made an odd discovery. While looking for something in my Z stash I found my original OEM CAMSHAFT SENSOR. There is a guy on Facebook that had an oil leak in this area. In this post on Facebook somebody mentioned they had the same leak and replaced it with the identical sensor that cost $38.00 shipped to my door. Other than 1727 printed under the main part number of 55505-00-02-A
When I replaced mine a few years ago I could only find an AIRTEX replacement and it was $200. GM hasn't had these for a few years now. Is it possible I may have found the deal of the century? Mouser has this for $28.00 with free shipping. I couldn't get the the order straight so I bought one for $38.00 shipped. A revision is in order, this part isn't an exact drop in replacement. I was going to look into this but got side tracked and never got back to it.

I just received a new cam position sensor from Phil. I got the old one out but WTH do you cram the new one in? It is not even close to squeezing in the hole. Is there a trick on getting it to slide in the hole? I have oil on the o ring, the hole is clean and smooth, and I have not even got it to start to go in by pushing it very hard. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try removing the o-ring. If it still doesn't go in all the way I'll send you another one. If it goes in put the o-ring back on and try it again twisting while pushing.

If only we lived in a society where other methods of communication existed, like... telephones, WhatsApp, etc. :D

Watched the new episode yesterday, great job cleaning up the wheel wells.

Ha! Thanks!! Annoyingly Phil doesn't seem to have got my emails but he's sent me a private message on here which I for some reason can't respond to (it looks like it's an account restriction!)

Modern tech eh!! :)

I think you need to get to a certain post count before it allows you to send PMs. Hopefully you're close! I did reach out to someone in the ZR-1 community who knows Phil this morning to see if we could bridge the gap (err.... pond) quicker and he said he had all the faith in the world Phil could make it happen if anyone could.

Aha! Makes sense! I'd better become more active here then! :)

Thanks for your help, we really appreciate it!

Just joined this forum to follow your efforts in the UK. Good luck finding the part and hope it solves the issue. Please post more updates here and your online videos.

FYI - I inherited a first gen Camaro that's in the UK but that'll probably be another story and forum.

Thanks Dave! I certainly will do! :) Is your 1st gen Camaro still in the UK or did you get it back home?

The Camaro is in the UK. It was my brother's and he passed away recently. Car has sat since 94 though I help him work on it in the late 80s when it was in the states. Maybe I should try to contact Jonny 😆.

Wasn't sure if to post here or in the general section regarding your LT5 engine. Sorry if you've already checked but while waiting for a Cam sensor could you use a scope to look at the sensor signal, coil trigger and injector trigger. I had an intermittent idle issue with my V8 Vantage and found one of the injectors was receiving a trigger but with my finger on the injector sometimes I couldn't feel the solenoid click. My C3 is so much easier to work on.
