View Full Version : What's this stain on rims?

Last week scored a nice set of OZ Racing Futura 18" wheels off a ZR-1, so I removed the '90 Saladshooter wheels and prepared them for storage. Removed pressure sensors and washed rims with 1/3 diluted wheel cleaner and gentle brush. Then a second wash with Green Soap Tincture and warm water, which is a fantastic degreaser. The fronts have a few stains, rears cleaned up nicely.
Any idea what caused this? Something leaking on to the rim? How best to gently clean?

It might have been brake fluid.

I agree with Jeff, first guess is brake fluid.
Second guess is a combo of brake dust and perhaps dog pee?
The latter combination eats the clear coat right off of a coated aluminum wheel.
If brake fluid, should be easily confirmed if currently leaking.
Do you have a pup?
Good luck!

So, a doggie that only prefers the front wheels, and has a key to the garage, yet she won't give a leg up towards A-molds...interesting!
Still good info, didn't know about the brake dust urine damaging effects. Previous owner did have a dog, but she was a good girl and wouldn't do that.
Front rims have Wilwood's behind them, so I'll give a close inspection there. What type of fluid are the shocks filled with?
