Key fob battery

I'm sure this has been asked plenty of times, but I could not find in a search. What is the best place to get a replacement battery for the key fob? Does your local Chevrolet dealer carry? I heard you could just find at Lowe's although it's not an exact replacement?

Dave,
All you need is an Energizer CR2032 Battery.
DO NOT USE CHEAP OFF BRAND ONES!
The voltage must be a consistent 3 volts for it to work correctly. The cheaper batteries often test < 3 when new, so spend the extra $1.00 and buy the Energizer CR2032.
Yes, Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, or almost everyone carries these.
A new car dealer will simply charge you $7.00 for a $1.50 battery that might have been sitting on the shelf for years.

I buy all of my button batteries (watches, remotes, etc) from Amazon. I get the Panasonic brand usually.
Priced elsewhere, they run $4-5 per battery. I can usually find a 10-pack on Amazon for $6-7, including prime shipping (same panasonic brand).

I took the old battery out and it is a 3v lithium Renata cr2450n. Says it's Swiss made. It is bigger than the energizer replacement. Was curious if the reneta battery is the original one and why it is larger. This is for my second key fob so I was thinking that maybe this fob is not an even for my car.

CR2450 IS ALSO A CORVETTE FOB BATTERY.
Energizer makes a replacement as well.


Does your fob unscrew or simply snap open?

They only come with one from the factory.

Will do Marty. Did they come with a second set of ignition keys? I have two keys and the second one works. My second set is just an ignition key (no door lock key). What made me think that the second key fob may not even be correct is because it simply comes apart by two screws ( no need to pry apart). I ordered the Renata battery and will let you know if it works. I'm thinking someone in the past just stuck this random fob with the key.

Two sets of keys with two different looking fobs. It's a 94.

The fob I always used I had no issues with. But recently the plastic clip at the top of the fob broke in half and now it's difficult to keep on my key chain. So I noticed I had the second fob that looks like it was never touched. So I took it out and it wouldn't work. Assumed it was the battery issue, but now I'm thinking it's not the right fob for the car. Will know soon enough when the battery arrives. Got the energizer battery last night that you recommended. It is noticeably smaller than the other battery.

I believe that all MY FSM will spec the 2450 but then add the "catch-all" OR Equivalent!!!

One thing I learned, not all 2450 batteries are the same. There is a step between the top and bottom of the battery, and it's different between the Duracell 2450 and the Renata. The Renata CR2450N fit better in my '96's FOB which looked a little different than my '93's FOB, but I stick with the Renata's.
