Ok so I’m starting to think there is a strong correlation here. I am aware of three instances where broken motor mounts correlated to broken exhaust hangers.
I recently noticed that my 180k mile Z has a broken exhaust hanger and another of the hangers has been rewelded.
Today, as part of my current header/Exhaust/flywheel/clutch/shifter project I pulled the motor mounts. I found both mounts broken. Obviously a function of age and mileage.
So this is now the fourth car with this issue that at least I am aware of. Begs the question how many of our 22 to 27 year old cars are running around with broken motor mounts. No amount of servicing or gingerly driving will prevent aging rubber mounts from breaking at some point. Checking them is not simple as they hide behind the heat blankets.
Here’s photo of the mounts...
