View Full Version : Sometimes I wonder...

Sometime I wonder what goes through the mind of some of these hotshots.
As an example, I was driving the ZR earlier today as I was doing some
datalogging. Low and behold up from behind comes a rather nasty sounding
5.0L Coyote Mustang. So he pulls up next to me and gives me a quick snap of the throttle while he's in neutral. The wxhaust note is pretty nasty sounding.
So sometimes I wonder, does he know what the ZR-1 moniker means?
But what I really wonder about is what does this guy in the 5.0 think, after demonstrating his nasty Coyote motor, that this 25 year old C4 Corvette decides to just jump in behind to stalk him. Hmmm. :-D:dancing

Well if he was thinking that, he would be very wrong. :proud::dancing:dancing
Frankly, I think he was just snorting and clearing his exhaust in the face of a lowly 25 year old C4 Corvette. I thought I would get into his rearview mirror and give him something to wonder about.

Well what I know that the guy in the mustang doesn't is that I beat the numbers mjn posted for Mustang. Except I beat them at the rear wheels and not at the crank.

I had the Z06 NPP exhaust valves closed at that point. I love sleepers.

The thing is the ZR-1 was king of the time, but a new mustang with a tune and full exhaust will hand us our lunch.

We have to have some serious mods to compete with new cars. Its just a fact and part of the game. I will say I beat a full bolt on 2003 Mach 1 a few years ago in my close to stock ZR-1. He thought I had a stock C4 LTx. When I popped the hood he was amazed at the engine. He had never seen one in person.

If u start out w a decent ZR-1 w an initial investment of 15-18k, do your own top end porting and exhaust, possibly a SM FW, you are now at about 470chp for a total investment of say 21k.
Add cams and head porting for another 3-5k, and you have a ~540chp for
roughly 25k total. And that's staying w stock displacement.
Another alternative would be to go w Pete's Closed Deck mod from the start w that same 15-18k stock car, and now u r in 600chp territory for about
the same total 25k investment. An incredible performance bargain and less than half of a stock Coyote Mustang.

Some ZR-1s w top end porting, headers and exhaust can even be had for mid to upper teens......Go to the next step, head porting and cams and you have over 500 HP barely breaking the 20K price...
Tough to find that in other used cars today.....

Having actually been on the engine dyno with LT5's in this range, 540chp is a bit optimistic if you're talking about reground cams, which top out around 240/.430". You need more camshaft to reach the numbers your quoting.

I know, I know, folks will try to extrapolate back from rwhp, but it doesn't work like you think.

Back to lurking. and building.

I got my GT performance pack for around $22k usd. $5k gets a whipple and over 700 horses. They have a ton of potential and used are becoming cheap.

stock I used my phone app on the same road and tested my GT and it was 1-1.5 mph slower than my zr1 stock. After intake cat back and tune its about 1 mph higher. So basically a Z with a cat back is a good match for a bolt on 5.0. Top end the Z should still pull away.

A stock coyote car will beat a zr-1 up to about 100 mph. I used to have both and I lost to my own mustang with my friend driving it like he stole it. Once you put headers on an LT5... well, then I hope the mustang is modded too.

but the real secret is the super low first gear in those new stangs along with variable cam phasing which makes that 300 inch engine have high torque at all times. It is good at time/distance acceleration contests right out of the box.

ON EDIT: Mine was a 2012 with 3:55 gears. the older ones weigh about 200 lbs less than the newer ones.
