So in my ongoing battle with proper fuel delivery I've come across a new and interesting question...
If the tank is 20 gallons, should my fuel gauge be reading reserve with 5 gallons left?

I think it comes on with 50 miles left. Based on the computers version of mileage.

I believe that is true. Also when you fill up you "should" hit the fuel button and I suggest the trip button to avoid a specular fuel economy surprise due to a sticking fuel float. I normally run with the range option and the trip running for just that reason. I used to have a DRM 90 L-98 as my first corvette and I ended up burning the fuel pump out due to a stuck float. Our cars are over 25 years old folks. Normal C-4 failures can and will happen. Save yourself the headache. Especially if your car stays in the garage a lot.

It's a brand new pump. Since it's been in, it turns over much longer before it starts and it tells me it's almost empty with 5 gallons left. Trying to figure out what I did wrong

A few years ago, on my way to The Gathering, I ran out of fuel w the Fuel Range showing 47 miles. Frankly I start looking for a gas station in earnest w 3 bars on Reserve.

Was the float and sock (Screen) replaced with the fuel pump ? I ask as the fuel pumps can be bought separate vs and entire unit. If you replaced the entire unit the float is sticking

Whole new unit. I actually replaced it so I could see how much fuel I had left as it wouldn't read before.
It's reading now, I'm just concerned with the 2 "issues" what the deal is. Something isn't right, I feel.

Never see mine with the reserve on as I never let my tank get lower than 1/4 before I fill up. I also watch mileage and fill up every 250-300 miles.
Years back I wanted to see how the bars related to gallons in the tank. I found the first smaller bars represented more gallons each than the last bars and the reserve came on about 3-4 gallons left.

Something is wrong with that unit. Where did you get it? See if they will replace it. GC

so how were you able to keep driving when your display was showing negative 20 a couple years ago on one of those lonely NC roads?
