All coupes had them until the style refresh in 1991. From that point on, only ZR-1s had them and the base coupe had the third brake light integrated into the rear fascia.

That's disappointing, since I thought I could determine a Z from the side. Now I have to check out the rear license plate spacers and rounded butt! [emoji16] Thanks for the info.

Rocker panels are different on the zr-1.

86-90 all Coupes. When the 86 first came out I HATED that damn tacky add on light. When the Z came out, they just had to throw it on there.

Is it possible to see the difference on the rocker panel (1990)?

It's actually rather simple to identify a Z. They are the only ones with the high stop light and the bubble butt combination. If it doesn't have both it's not a Z.

If seen from the front, the Z also has a much more pronounced shoulder where the non-Zs have a smooth transition from B-pillar to rocker panel.

From the front there is a subtle flair starting at front of door.
From the rear the license plate spacers are the obvious giveaway.
From the side, the rear wheels have a deeper recess than the front.
And of course, the CHMSL.

All this is easily spotted at a glance by most ZR-1 owners, even across six lanes of interstate, going the other way at 80mph :))
